This is probably the nicest resort where we have stayed. Definitely the best in a wine region. Everything was perfect. Our room was truly amazing. We were in a corner room and the views were so beautiful. The unique decor of each room adds to the ambience such that it doesn't feel like a mass-produced hotel in any way. The food was delicious and more than anything, the service was first class. The deputy GM, Hoon, is a wonderful person. He is warm, genuine and goes above and beyond. Give that man a raise and promotion! You can't train that in someone and he left a lasting impression on us. We hope to come back someday!!
So originally I had given this resort 1 star and my husband actually did the same. I had a bad run in with Robyn ( who is very rude). When I reached out to Werner the GM he assured me that Robyn wasn't rude and that I was overreacting. I let the fact that he was just trying to butter me up go. We ( my husband and I) had come to this resort from the United States for our honeymoon. WHILE there I told the staff I wanted someone to reach out to me about booking one of their villas for a whole week. Yes, we were looking at 14k+ JUST for the stay. That is how much we loved it! However, Werner chose to leave a comment on my original tripadvisor review that was not only nasty but written out of spite, hate, and it was clear he was looking to "embarrass" me. His comment on my review basically said that I was embarrassed that my card got declined due to a large amount. Honestly, anyone that travels or makes large purchases KNOWS that you have to get approval from your bank if it is a debit card. Especially if you have a credit union!! He then tried to report my reviews by saying I never visited the establishment. Luckily, I have a plethora of pictures and receipts that show otherwise!! So of course I reached out to the owners. Phil was AMAZING. Listened to what I had to say and was willing to help. Asked me what I wanted and I explained I didn't want anything. I assured him I would delete our two original reviews ( which I did). This was done as a choice by us because Phil was amazing. However, I wanted to be fair for the viewers reading the reviews for La Residence. The reason this review is a 3 and not a 5 is ONLY because of Werner ( The GM) and Robyn ( The Receptionist). The owners are amazing. Don't fault the two bad apples when the rest of the bushel is amazing! So we have chosen not to return and will be going to Indonesia instead!!!! I would just avoid the rotten apples at all cost. Also the sister resorts looking amazing!! Cheers <3…
What a beautiful place and such wonderful people who work there. The setting is gorgeous and so peaceful. The staff was amazing. I was not feeling well when we first arrived. The GM Werner quickly arranged for me to be able to rest in another room while they got our room ready. Ryno and the other staff were so kind and considerate in trying to make me feel better. Hoon, the deputy GM was also delightful. The pool is a perfect place to relax and take in the incredible scenery. The room is large an well appointed. And the bathroom was so big it had a chaise lounge in it! All in all a wonderful experience. Can't wait to go back!
La Res was the second leg of our first holiday since covid was declared a pandemic by the WHO, so clearly we were very much looking forward to it. We reached la res after spending 3 amazing nights at Birkenhead, their sister property at Hermanus. Unlike at Birkhenhead, where service was wonderful in all areas, at La Res, a line could be drawn where the good service ended and the poor service started. When we arrived, we were given a very warm welcome by the GM, Werner Krause. He was friendly and always available to help with any questions or concerns we had. Food was amazing and the kitchen staff were wonderful. This is where the line was drawn and the good service ended. Upon arrival, we were escorted to our suite by a gentleman who was unable to answer our very basic questions eg. Is the mini bar included? He said he was new so did not know, but would find out for us. Shouldn’t he have read up on the room before he was orienting guests to it? He did not get back to us, so we asked the reception about drinks. The reception said the mini bar was included, but should I want, say a G & T, in the main area, I would have to pay for it as someone would have to make it for me. When speaking to our travel agent, we finally found out that all drinks, regardless of where we had them were included in our stay. Heated floors in the rooms did not work, I lifted a lemon to make a drink and found that it was all green and moldy at the bottom. Chips at the mini bar were rancid. I dropped an earring and got down on the floor to look for it when I saw a thick layer of dust on the carpets and under the bed. The pool had lots of dead leaves in it – during our three days there, the pool was not cleaned even once. One night, my dad ordered room service. They piled all the items he ordered in the same pot and brought it to him! The phone line in one of the rooms was not working. Obviously our suite was not inspected before we checked in. Poor housekeeping and service around residential area really stopped us from fully enjoying ourselves. Considering how much they charge foreigners for this place, they should deliver nothing short of perfection. This places has lots of great reviews, so I’m really not sure of why they kept dropping the ball when we were there. Werner, like I said above, you were wonderful and I did get your email apologizing on behalf of housekeeping and the lack of/poor pre-arrival room inspection and inviting us for another stay. Thank you for the invitation, but I just don’t think I’m in a position to spend lots of money again just to see if housekeeping has got their act together. I’d rather spend that money at Birkenhead where they got it right the first time.…
This really has it all, the setting is beyond comparison, the staff are superb, the restaurant is magnificent as is the wine (which you seemingly cannot purchase elsewhere. Plus, the town of Franschhoek is very quaint, lots to do, shop, dine, enjoy. My tow favorite wineries are La Residence (I prefer the traditional European style) and Delaire Graff (also, a great setting, terrific views and modern in style.) Still, La Residence feels like you're in Europe and you have the benefit of being proximate to a great town (3 minutes) yet a setting that feels very private and intimate, Definitely, a romantic destination. About an hour drive from Cape Town and an easy drive.
