Ludus Magnus is not only beautiful but also “homey”. The rooms are on the same levels as the kitchen /dining area , with ample space to gather as a group. The staff is attentive and welcoming, they were willing to help us explore the area. There are multiple activities to keep busy and pockets of quiet can be found too. Enjoyed our stay

There are almost not enough superlatives for this place. The hospitality of the owners and all the staff is outstanding. Each room and the villas have the perfect view of the mountains around Franschhoek and are very stylishly decorated. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. The sports facilities with its own private lake, the 400m track and the 25m pool are a dream for sporty guests. We loved every minute of our stay and hope to be back soon.

The property is gorgeous, tucked away, serene. The staff is friendly, willing to assist and really took care of us. The rooms are well designed, with beautiful finishes and modern touches.
Lot's to do on the property, we had sundowners at the deck, canoeing , swimming and the entertainment areas allowed us to hangout, watch tele and play games.

However the property does lack some 5 star qualities, no slippers in the rooms, flies galore (we can blame the weather partly), you have to call the property 3 times just to get in. For these reasons i give 4 stars. Well on it's way to 5 star luxury

The design and fixtures and fittings are world class. The location and views are stunning. It just doesn't work, purely because of the little things. The cost of this hotel should be premium five star (and before and after this we experienced two amazing 5 star offerings) - for example, there's a TV downstairs, which whilst nice to chill and watch, there was continual interruption from things being moved between rooms, cleaning etc. (at 10pm!), the correct code to enter the property wasn't given to us and the directions are poor (this is simple to solve - have small business cards which you give to guests with the code on). Then a team meeting was happening around the breakfast table when we were having breakfast (very strange) and because the hotel has been built like a house, the staff chat to each other and aren't really checking if you need anything as a guest. It's all just a bit of a strange experience - could be awesome, but definitely wasn't!

Response from Team Ludus Magnus, Owner at Ludus Magnus
Responded 22 Feb 2022
Dear Paul, We, as the owners, are very grateful that you took the time to write your review. The journey of transforming what used to be discarded vineyards and old farmland by planting 8000 trees during the most difficult lockdown in recent history was unparalleled. Having our guests see and appreciate the transformation is a special pleasure for us, and thank you so much for acknowledging our work in your review. Unfortunately, your stay was moved from December 2021 to coincide with the visit of a high profile government delegation. This was a first for us and our hospitality team, and we have gained many valuable lessons. Following the series of interruptions with security meetings and access codes and other security amendments that lasted until well into the night, we couldn't provide our standard offering to you and therefore offered you to move to one of our newly opened villas instead. Note that we are implementing procedures, training and systems to absolutely avoid a repeat of your experience, which is not what we intend to deliver in guest satisfaction. It will be our pleasure to welcome you back in the near future to experience the changes we've made to refine, redefine and evolve our hospitality services. With warm Cape Winelands wishes, operating since 2021 from our team at Ludus Magnus.

Although this guesthouse ( not a true hotel) is set in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains and various outdoor activities; the indoors really disappoints. The rooms are small with no seating/ lounge area, no patio furniture on balcony/ terrace, bathrooms are narrow shower rooms with a single basin. The bed linen is of an average quality . There is one communal fireplace (located upstairs) leaving the downstairs area very cold in winter. The breakfast is passable but nothing special. All in this establishment can be summed up as nothing as special compared to the room rate they charge; especially when compared to other high end options in the Franschoek area.

Rachel and I were looking for something special to celebrate our 25th Anniversary. we landed on Ludus Magnus via Google and thought this was exactly what we were looking for. L/M kindly upgraded us to a villa, which was exceptional. The decor is wonderful and bold, the living space, bed linen..sumptuous, the outdoor area was relaxing with generous sun loungers and the kitchen and complimentary drinks, fabulous. We were blown away by the living quarters in the villa as well as the main manor house with jaw dropping views over the mountains..just stunning! we had the package that included dinner with wine pairing, so being able to do this with a private chef was just amazing. But more was to come as we visited the dam/island with swimming lanes and beach, we circuited the running track and playing field and also visited the rescued animals such as donkey as glimpsed the springboks. went for a swim in the dam which was wonderful and as water levels were low could understandably not use the river, but the estate was amazing and I love the ethos..100% off grid, rescue animals and the containers onsite as reminder of how this place came about with the owners. A sportsman's paradise, but can be enjoyed by all Kudos to the team to do this over lockdown...just an amazing gem.
More importantly, the team - they were amazing and made the stay so memorable. I hope to return very very soon to this wonderful experience!
Thank you to all: Anine, Erin, Blessing, Jason, Adriaan, and all the team at Ludus Magnus for a most wonderful and memorable stayxx

Ludus Magnus is brand new and has excellent facilities. The main hotel building is a work of art!

There are loads to keep you busy - the kayak experience down the river is a must and so is a run around the farm. We hired a private chef for dinner and that was also excellent.

The staff is incredibly helpful and the service is very good but as it's brand new, some of the staff are still finding their feet in terms of 5-star hotel level service.

The hands-on approach from the manager and owners makes the overall experience exceptional as you really feel valued as a guest.

The location is also excellent.

I would highly recommend Ludus Magnus if you are looking for a unique getaway in Franschoek.

So dreamy this place, with the most beautiful sunset. There is so much to love about Ludus Magnus. The service was top tier, the food was amazing, spectacular views, gorgeous rooms, went river rafting for the first time and had the time of my life. I could go on and on, I had an amazing stay.

I had the chance to stay at the Ludus Magnus during the Bastille Festival weekend with my friends. I appreciated the calm and serenity of this property which differentiates from the atmostphere of the Franschhoek center. The staff was very professional, Erron is a person very attentive to detail, and gave me a lot of information on the activities in Franschhoek. Special mention for the food which was just amazing, thank you to Shandre the chef, she is very talented.
We were running every morning on the field, the accommodation are juste stunning, there is a lot to do inside the property.
I definitely recommend Ludus Magnus and we will probably come back with the all family.
