This is a lovely small hotel that enjoys an excellent location just off the main road in Franschhoek. You can easily walk to the wine tram, restaurants, etc from here.
I was looking forward to my stay as I was a returning guest to this hotel. Unfortunately, I experienced a very serious problem at checkin and noticed that another guest had the same complaint:
My confirmed rate for four nights was R8,433.50. However, on check in, the hotel charged me R12,468.52! Nearly 50% more than agreed!
To be fair to the hotel, they did put a refund through for the extra R4.035.02 when I produced my confirmation email and challenged them. Had I not done this, I would have been severely overcharged. The problem was blamed on a computer error. As mentioned above, another gentleman was complaining at the desk about the same problem whilst I was being attended to - so I advise everyone to check their charges carefully!
I also note that, despite the refund being put through within minutes of the charge, it has still not hit my account at the time of writing and so I remain out of pocket. I have the confirmation slip for the refund, so hopefully it will not prove necessary to open a dispute with American Express…
Why, then, after such a serious problem would I still award four stars?
Simply because I’m satisfied that this was a mistake (rather than a calculated ripoff) and because the hotel itself is beautiful and comfortable with a perfect location, as mentioned above. It’s the perfect place to stay in an absolutely stunning part of South Africa.
Most of the rooms face out onto a beautiful garden with a small swimming pool, with floor to ceiling windows and privacy curtains. Fresh decor, comfortable bed and smart TV in the room. Well-appointed bathroom with both shower and bath.
Load shedding is a big problem everywhere in South Africa at the moment, but this hotel does have a generator to ensure everything stays powered up for an extra hour at night. Lights and WiFi still work after this.
Breakfast is very good with plenty of cooked and continental options served in the adjacent Hussar Grill (which has a door into the hotel lobby)
Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Nothing too much trouble.
So, it would have been five stars without the severe overcharging. I hope the refund will hit my account soon!

Dear tifosi678 Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. Your feedback is welcomed and we appreciate the positive notes made. We had experienced a systems fault whereby rates updated when rooms were moved, thus overriding the original rates and this caused the cost to inflate. This error was not picked up at the time of your arrival. I am however pleased that the difference had been refunded speedily. The banks sometimes takes time in releasing funds back to clients as refunds are vetted. However should the funds still not reflect in your account please let us know for us to raise this with our bank. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. Thank you for your support and kind words. We wish to welcome you again soon. Best regards Jennifer and TEAM

There were four of us in 2 separate rooms - we all had a terrible night's (rather lack of) sleep.
A shame, because it's an attractive building inside & out; really clean; in a great location and (ironically) really comfy beds and lovely pillows and linen. But it is simply way too noisy to be viable as somewhere charging people to sleep.
We arrived to the sound of construction noise - in fairness we had been pre-warned about renovations and makes sense to do such work out of season, but maybe not late on a Saturday afternoon.
We were all woken up at 3.00 AM by screaming female voices. I assume guests after a good night out and get you can't control your guests' behaviour - but the screaming continued for half an hour, during which time hotel staff should have stepped in to tell them to show some respect to other guests and shut up.
Then we were woken again by blaring music just after 6.00 AM. On phoning reception to point this out, we were told they know and it's the staff in the restaurant, who like to play music. It's terrible that it took guests to tell the hotel to tell their staff not to play blaring music at six in the morning. Some of the noise that blighted our stay was out of the hotel's control - but this was totally on them. Quite simply, the hotel staff wanted to listen to blaring music at six in the morning, without any care at all for paying guests, trying to sleep. This is inexcusable and shows utter contempt towards paying guests.
The doors need better sound dampers and/or people who care about closing them as silently as possible - most of the slamming doors were early morning, so again I suspect staff not caring at all about the guest experience.
And dogs constantly barking from very early morning, in between being woken by screaming and woken by music. This noise absolutely not in the hotel's control - but just added to the general cacophony and resulting sleep deprivation.
In summary then not a hotel to book if you want a night's sleep, which is why you book a hotel. Mentioned to reception on check out, but got the sense they didn't care, as money already banked. And that's the really bad/sad part of this.
A shame - could be lovely with a bit of consideration, care and a few adaptations.

Dear Daydreams54693627409, Thank you for taking the time to share your overall stay experience with us. We are pleased to note that there were high notes experienced during your stay in regards to cleanliness, service and location. I totally agree with you summation that noise in the control of the establishment should be addressed as swiftly as possible. We have been looking into this matter and give you our assurance that the matter is now well in hand. Having said the before mentioned this by no means alleviate the experience had, which is not the norm at our establishment. Our guest experience is very important to us, I will personally be in contact with you in the coming days. Kindly accept our expressed regret at the isolated instance. Kind regards Jennifer and TEAM

I've stayed here several times over the last few years both with friends and for date nights. I only have good things to say about it! The staff is so attentive and friendly - everything is kept clean at such a high standard. The rooms have everything you need. I love the pool and the courtyard, it makes you feel like you're in a quiet oasis. There's a wide assortment for a yummy breakfast! Hussar Grill is onsite and is an affordable favourite for lunch or dinner. You can walk everywhere to and from the hotel, it's in the middle of Franschhoek and you can easily shop or pop over to one of the many restaurants and galleries in town - which means no need for taxis or drunk driving

Amazing location, quaint hotel, lovely rooms over looking the pool area and views of the mountains. Stayed 4 nights 24th-28th December, fabulous Christmas!
I took gifts for all the staff to give at breakfast time 25th Dec and books for their young families, such appreciation was shown.
Lovely friendly staff who were always smiling, watching the staff wait for their bus home all wearing santa hars and singing along gives me a smile on my face, fab memories .
Very easy to walk either way around Franschhoek town to many restaurants and cafes and bars. Amazing live music every night at a nearby out door restaurant (Christmas day too which was really good fun).
Always felt safe even at night walking home from the restaurants, security around the roads too.
Hussar Grill on site at hotel was fabulous for Christmas Eve meal sat outdoors, best dessert ..we can still taste it now!
Peaceful pool area, sipping MCC on a lounger on Christmas morning in the African sunshine...bliss 🥂
Faizaan Head of Reception...such a gem she really helped me alot whilst planning our trip and greeted me personally with a huge hug upon arrival.
South Africans are the friendliest 😊
Immaculate hotel overall would 100% stay here again and recommend 👌

Centrally located, clean, appealing and nice to look at. The beautiful rooms - on the ground floor or on the first floor - always go to the pool. Unfortunately, there is no insulation against sound. So after the morning door slamming and the hungry breakfast guests strolling past the room and chatting loudly, you experience the pack formation of the group travelers by the pool from the early afternoon at the latest. Loud, alcoholic and without any idea of behaviour in the hotel, people celebrate and make noise. We were only 2 nights here and experienced only 2 different tour groups. That's all we can and don't want. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, breakfast fine. Recommendation for couples: Book elsewhere.

Our 2 night stay at the Protea was a great way to end a 14 day tour of the Cape. We were checked in very quickly and went straight to our ground floor room opposite the swimmng pool. The room was large, clean and very well equipped with efficient air conditioning, a fridge, safe, TV and tea/coffee making facilities. Also there was, very helpfully, a UK style electric socket so no need to ask for an adaptor. The bathroom was very good with a large walk in shower. We slept well both nights on a very comfortable bed. The restaurant was, unfortunately, fully booked for dinner but the menu looked enticing. Breakfasts were first class with plenty of juice of cooked and cold items. The staff were, without exception, cheerful and helpful. Couldn't recommend the place more highly!

A well located hotel with spacious rooms Beautiful wallpaper of flowers on the walls of the room . Room was spotless , clean and neat . Large doors with plenty of light in the room .Warm and well insulated with a good heater. A common verandah that faces the lawn and poolside. Large and well equipped bathroom .
The hotel had a good generator so the guests don't feel the 2 hour powder cut that most hotels in South Africa have to face in the evening time..
A short walk away from the hotel you will find some shops and restaurants. We got some food from the grocery store which we decided to eat at the hotel. The receptionist was extremely courteous and arranged plates and cutlery for us to eat outdoors by the pool .
Breakfast is amazing.... each dish is well presented with a good variety of options The restaurant is done up like an English Pub . The service is great . Steve, our waiter was polite, friendly and always smiling . A lovely hotel and would recommend it to stay for sure.

Fantastic hotel, great location and stayed here for 2 nights. I celebrated my 60th birthday on the first night and had an excellent meal in the Hussar Grill. A particular mention to our waiter Blessing who made my birthday night very special with a lovely decorated birthday pudding with sparkling candle and a chocolate vodka drink! Certainly an evening to remember and Blessing is a credit to the Hussar Grill with his kindness and enthusiasm in looking after his customers.

Dear Kenzerbenzer,
We have got quite a few spas in Franschhoek, 2 of which are just a few minutes walk away from us.
And our Guests often make us of a mobile spa that comes to the Hotel which i would definitely recommend as all our Guests are quite happy with them.
i hope this has helped.
Kind regards,

Hi
There are a few you can walk to - but each will take you 15 minutes or more.
Rickety bridge is close, so too is Branson's farm.
I suggest you look at a map and decide (I dont have one at present)
There are more places to choose from in the Franschhoek area.
