Very comfortable and well maintained tent combos and a useful "secure" parking area to load and unload. Not a massive amount of action and a long road to anywhere, but Mata Mata a convenient shop and fuel supply just up the way. Stay for three nights as a combo with elsewhere in the Park.

We stayed in the Kalahari Tented Camp on our first day in the park. Book in at Mata Mata Rest Camp. Staff were very friendly and helpful and even popped in later in the evening to make sure that we settled in. Kitchen was well stocked and we could enjoy an outside braai whilst a giraffe was trying to catch a drink on the pan. Plenty of jackal about so don't let anything lie around. There's a well maintained communal pool available on site and plenty of blankets if you are inclined to feeling cold at night. A very enjoyable experience and will probably stay for more than one night next time.

Totally different to what I expected. I expected it to be a basic tent with no frills. Not at all. It is not really glamping either. It was like home. Comfortable and inviting. We had a separate kitchen with everything that we needed and an outside braai area. I was a little worried about the kids safety since it was intended. There was nothing to worry about. The jackals are always visiting but we’re rather friendly than aggressive. I had to keep reminding the kids they were wild animals. We had a plain in front of us with a watering hole and we could watch animals coming in and out. The pool was way too cold so we popped into Mata Mata and enjoyed that pool instead. Over the two days we spent there we went from 40 degree weather to hailstorms and thunderstorms. It was beautiful. The evenings were filled with the sounds of jackals. We never ran out of power because we were on solar and we could make a phone call if necessary.
My kids have decided that next time we are staying at Mata-Mata. According to them, the meerkats are there, bird hide, air con and obviously the pool.
In my opinion, I prefer the seclusion and serenity of the Kalahari tented camp. Food for the soul.

Within all the game parks we've visited in South Africa, the Kalahari Tented Camp is our favourite spot. As such, we've been regular visitors to this camp over the past six years. The chalets are comfortable and private, while game viewing is generally very good.

There are two managers, Jan and Gert, who have consistently looked after our every need whilst visiting the camp. Sadly, a new manager, Desmond, has been brought in and his confrontational and argumentative style contrasts with the ethos of every Sanparks employee we have engaged with in the park. As such, our recent stay was negatively impacted by his attitude - as was that of another couple who shared their views with us.

If you go to Kgalagadi you should not miss some of those smaller camp opportunities such as this one here - but beware, they are mostly booked out months in advance!
The Tented camp offers a very nice and comfy double-bed tent with adjacent ablution block, a private terrace with a private kitchen-tent. And you have views onto the waterhole.
This is a very nice experience to stay in such smaller camp and you will marvel at the silence and the stars above you!

Sam was fabulous guide very knowledgeable and kind. The volume and types of animals was astounding. The staff in our camp were helpful and the food was tasty. I didn’t expect the food to be good. I would highly recommend this trip.

loved the place, tented but has everything you need with brilliant views but as others have said, the floodlight at the water hole really is a bit too dim, we were in No 10 and that was possibly the closest and with the best view..but you still couldn't make out shapes etc very well. 5 rather large gekoes and a large bat inside the tent wasn't good for me but didn't spoil the stay. tent briaa area etc all very clean, all in all very good value ......except if you have Ocean Golf guest house Holidays in the next 4 tents, these people should stick to Golf holidays, they all got together outside the N0 9 tent next to us each evening for a party and with all the lights on until about 22.00 hours each of our three nights, the peace and quiet you expect as the normal for these kind of wilderness place was totally shot to bits, it was holiday from hell time more like Benidorm, the park ranger wasn't too interested in shutting them up but then again I think this company block book the site for the year. It should be so quiet, but the guy running this golf company was so so loud that his clients must of thought that's the normal way to behave. I could go on and tell you everything they did, ate, names, jokes, everyone in the camp got the full volume. 18 - 30's? no, mainly "Surrey" type Golfing ladies who each had to be heard above the other and had no respect for others in the camp.
I would love to go here again but only if assured this crowd were not allowed in, they spoilt it for all so I have to mark the camp down.
Come on SANPARKS clamp down on this sort of behaviour please.

Staying in this open camp was one of the best experiences we had in the Kgalagadi. The tents were VERY well equipped, extremely clean, well maintained and built in such a way that you feel completely secluded in the wilderness.

There are no electric sockets in the tents, so if you want to charge your camera batteries do it in the car, in advance or, like me, ask the attendant at Mata Mata's shop to charge it there while you are game viewing. Lights in the tents are powered by solar energy, and the rest of the appliances by gas.

Remember to take a good flashlight to search for animals that might be passing in the riverbed in front of the tent! A lit waterhole is also overlooked by all tents.

Game viewing in the area was PHENOMENAL!!! At night you are bombarded with sounds like jackals (which will visit you at the tent - please don't feed them!) calling and lions roaring.

When visiting the Kgalagadi, you need to stay here at least 2 nights, you won't be disappointed!

Fantastic position. The accommodation needs some serious upgrading. Nights are very cold in winter. Lions, hyena and jackal around the camp. Plenty of other game in the vicinity. The birdlife was also plentiful and varied.

Note that this camp is not fenced, bringing you closer to nature. Also there is no electricity. The two nights we stayed here, the days were lovely and hot, but the evenings were freezing! I had 3 blankets on my bed. During the day we sat on our "patio" and watched various animals coming to the nearby waterhole to drink. During the night we heard the lions roaring continuously ... it sounded very close ... only to have the ranger tell us they were IN the camp that night.

Look up the SANParks website choose Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park look under wilderness camps you will see Kalahari Tented camp there. You have to book with the SANParks either by phone to central reservation or register online with them to book online. First best to check availability on line under name of the camp then choose dates and ring them or do online after registering your profile at SANParks website. A lovely camp despite the puff adder in the kitchen. good Luck

Hi, The tents are very cool. Although it was very warm ,I was comfortable sitting on the veranda in the shade. The veranda is not very high but completely safe. You are required not to feed the animals to prevent bad behaviour such as foraging. However, some visitors do not comply. I saw no cats in any form near the camp. However, I saw jackal who have a den nearby patrolling at night. Also 3 golden mongoose had a den under the tent platform. If you sit very still they will come on to the veranda to look at you. A wonderful photo oppurtunity.

We stayed at the Kalahari Tented camp as well Mata Mata (in the older chalets). I would pick the Kalahari Tented camp anytime. I would rather stay here than at Mata Mata in the River chalets. It is more private and offers great game viewing. We spend one entire day on the little stoep of the tent reading and watching the game. This was also the only camp where we heard lion, hyena and jackal in the night.
