After 3 nights in Nossob, we spent 2 nights in Mata Mata in a chalet (the older ones, not the newer riverfront chalets). Our chalet was very comfortable, clean, and had everything we needed. With the extreme heat (44C) during the day, we were so glad to have a chalet with AC in the bedroom (and felt for the brave campers in their tents!). The pool next to our chalet was a godsend in the afternoons to cool down (although we had to go around the times the huge group of children bombarded the place. The roads up toward the camp on this side of the park were horrendous, with a lot of corrugation, and many areas of very thick sand (making many people - including us - get stuck and need a tow out), which forced us to not do an afternoon drive (given the heat and soft sand) on our second day. We enjoyed a guided safari that evening instead, seeing some things (cobra, barking gecco) that we would not have seen otherwise. We had Wifi at our chalet, as the signal from the reception was strong enough to reach. The animal sightings and scenery were incredible, and we hope to go back (maybe at a cooler time of year!). As usual, Sanparks did not disappoint, and the staff were all friendly and helpful.

It was the third time for me in this camp that I like very much, I was given the same chalet of last time.
The location of the camp is very good: in my opinion the Mata Mata Road offers the best sightings you can have in the park (I know it’s a matter of luck and not a certainty).
Our chalet was a bit old but nice and we felt comfortable. There is the heat pump that is needed in winter evenings.
The shop has a good choice of food (not fresh) compared to shops in other parks.
Staff at reception is very kind.

Mata Mata is a SANParks camp. The camp has a power point, braai and many shady trees albeit slightly cramped. The ablution facilities are in perfect condition. Everything working and spotless. There is a small shop for basic needs and a petrol station. Take note of limited trading hours due to Covid.
We used the riverside chalets which again were spotless and well maintained. There is more critter activity in the camp than around the chalets chalets have air conditioners and fans, fully equipped kitchen, TV and supply towels. There is a game drive vehicle which accommodates 10 people (it is a public camp). The vehicle is in excellent condition but due to squashed numbers we did not take up the offer (R380 per person).
Gates are open from 05h30 to 19h30.

On the 11th November we had a booking at the tented camp. When we arrived there (between 10 and 11h00) there was nobody at reception. Eventually, after looking around, someone named JAN arrived and told us that we were actually worrying him, as he was having breakfast - another way of saying "welcome to Mata Mata"! That afternoon we realized that the fridge was not working and everything in the fridge had melted. When you pay R2,100 for a nights accomodation, you expect better service and comforts. It was so hot in the tent that my lipstick melted. The next morning when we wanted to book out, again nobody at reception! Common guys, is this the best you can do? Betsie

Let’s not forget this is Sanparks and the new boundary chalets are superb. Having a braai right on the edge of the kgalagadi is superb and we had lions at the waterhole 2 nights we were eating our dinner.

Visited during COVID and the protocols were very well arranged and they had thankfully left the pool open ! It was extremely hot. There was a meerkat den when we stayed - but there were signs of them everywhere so sure they’ll be there most years

Only negative for me is they need to invest in 1 or 2 picnic spots on the toad down to urikaruus - would be great to have some more options to alight your vehicle stretch the legs with the family. Even some hides at some water holes would be a very welcome addition as there is only one road to drive! It is however very productive

We stayed in the river chalet which was very neat, clean and spacious (two bedrooms, each with their own bathroom). Lots of room for our children to play. Lovely private patio area with a braai overlooking the dry river bed. We had a view of two watering holes which attracted a few animals (gemsbok, jackal, springbok etc.) The camp itself is very small and basic, no electricity during the night, small swimming pool, small shop with the basics and a fuel station. Staff weren't very friendly or helpful but we found this to be a common thing throughout this particular park. Would definitely recommend the river chalets. (For those wanting to camp, it has a very shady and pretty camp site with a nice view over the river bed.)

We only managed to get a booking for one night in a chalet overlooking a dry river bed and had the privilege of seeing Cheetahs walking by a few meters from the fence. Very nice camp and can be recommended but ensure that you take your own necessities because they are not well stocked and it seems as if their supply line from Tweerivieren can become erratic. We could for example not get any firewood for a braai because the delivery from Tweerivieren didn't arrive.

First time visiting Kgalagadi. After a lot of rain, the bush are very dense. We battled at first to see animals. Lots and lots of Gemsbok, Springbok and Blue Wildebeest. After hours of driving around, we saw lion, hyena, martial eagles and jackals. And the cutest squirrels, all over. It’s sad that there is only one road from Mata-Mata to travel on. Gravel roads are in a very good condition. We stayed in a riverfront chalet, but there is no river. No river for many years. No housekeeping done...
