At the foot of the Nelshoogte pass in Mpumalanga, lies a spectacular home of luxury... Dawsons Game & Trout Lodge. Dawsons is a place where the sun dances across the open plains at sunrise and sunset, painting the landscape a vivid combination of fiery red, orange, copper and gold. Where large herds of Zebra, Impala, Springbok, Blesbuck, Eland and Wildebeest slowly wander the 2000ha Savannah plains, impervious to time. It is a place where dramatic mountains, waterfalls and perennial streams flow lazily from trout dam to trout dam. Surrounded by open space where you can relish the freedom of timelessness, exploration and peace. It is a place of retreat, of absolute relaxation. We offer magnificent accommodation, superb cuisine, and impeccable service

We spent a great 3 days at Clifftop lodge from 22 to 25 July 2022. The food, game drives and accommodation was special. There was unfortunately one big problem. Since cars are not allowed on the estate everybody must park their cars at one of Welgevonden's gates and are transported from there to the lodge where you are booked at. When staying at Clifftop lodge number 8 you are quite far from reception and on a big 5 reserve with no fence. There is wifi and the only calls you can make from your phone is Whatsapp calls. On the night of 24 July I made 22 calls to reception which was all not answered. There was no way to contact anybody since there was no cellphone number provided to contact management or reception. It is impossible to call a landline from your cellphone if you have no signal and only wifi. In the event of an emergency this means you are cut off totally from any help and sitting on a big 5 reserve without access to your car. The idea of this really is quite scary. Fortunately my reason for wanting to contact reception was not an emergency. Other guests may have more serious reasons for needing to contact reception in emergencies and this matter should be attended to. After all you pay a lot of money to stay at Clifftop lodge and the least you would expect is to at least be able to get hold of reception. Appart from this we had a great stay.

Dawson's was the ideal location to begin a three week trip throughout South Africa and Eswatini. We arrived on day two of our journey from the U.S. and found Dawson's the perfect place to adjust to the time zone change and the exhaustion of travel. Spent two very relaxing nights in the genuine hospitable care of Mieke and her staff. We were made to feel welcome and at home throughout our stay as we enjoyed delicious meals, afternoon tea, and the breath-taking poolside. A fun morning excursion on quads across the property to see the beautiful landscapes and herds of zebra, impala, and wildebeest did not disappoint. The luxury and comfort of the lodge, the setting, the cuisine as well as the kindness and service of the entire staff will make you want to extend your stay!

Excellent facilities guarantee an enjoyable and peaceful stay. The food is also top class.
The location is also perfect if you want to make a stop over from the Kruger Park back home with beautiful scenery on route
Pity that interleading door to next bedroom was not soundproof and provided zero privacy.

Hidden in the valleys of the Nelshoogte Pass lies the breath taking Dawson Lodge in the Mpumalanga escarpment.
From the minute you drive through the gates, you are surrounded by over a thousand hectares of beautiful nature.
Upon arrival at the Lodge we were greeted by the friendliest and most efficient staff that continued for the duration of our stay.
The rooms were exactly has in the photo's on Booking.com! The whole lodge is decorated in a timeless Colonial style. With an abundance of attention to detail.
The rooms are very comfortable, clean and as mentioned before stylish.
Homely warm and inviting fireplaces were lit every night in our room, after turn down.
Where do I begin with the food!
Every dish not only a feast on the eyes but a mouth watering experience.
Thank you Mieke, Lerato and Meynah for your excellent hospitality.
Jerry took us on a very interesting and beautiful game drive.
Game viewing included sights of various antelope.
There are various dams on the property that one can fly fish.
Quad biking, hiking and mountain biking are a few of the activities one can explore.
Unfortunately at the time of our stay the Spa was not open, so just check if you are wanting to include this in your stay.

Thank you Dawson Game and Trout Lodge for a wonder three days of pure bliss and soul therapy.

The lodge is situated in a beautiful environment where several animals gaze the farm. We took a 1.5-hour bike ride during which we saw all the animals and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food is excellent, well presented, and delicious. The bartender is really nice, however the wine selection is somewhat limited. When we initially entered our room, someone had taken a nap on the bed and forgot to replace the pillows so we would not notice. This is unacceptable, and we should have requested a new room. For a five-star lodge, air conditioning in the rooms is required.

I really enjoyed my stay, the place is beautiful and scenic. The rooms are huge and very beautiful. Omg I wish I had more time. Definitely coming back to experience the drives and quadbikes this time. Never got to do much as I traveled for work...I just couldn't wait to review my stay. The stuff was friendly, kept calling me when I was getting lost even took my order for dinner and prepared it minutes before we got there. Definitely coming back

After a dirt road you will arrive ar a great location, with animals, a perfect house, quietness and a true amazing Hospitality. After having dinner at the fireplace, you can have a small desert wine with your own private fireplace in your room. The bathroom, shower, food, people are all top notch! A true recommendation

Experience was good, few things were not as expected. Day visitors received quicker and better service than paying hotel guests. When the bill came for the weekend, services were added that were not agreed upon. Bar service was slow as well high tea so we missed high tea.

Due to COVID we were the only guests. The friendly staff, Mieke, the host and Chef were very friendly and accomodating. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner next to the fireplace where they set up our dinner table. The rooms are big, spacious and beautiful with breathtaking views. And don't forget the fireplace for cold nights and some port. We had game wandering outside the windows. Love the slipper bath!
