I had a very brief stay at the Rose and Rooster recently. I travelled down from Jo'burg to attend a function in Winterton and stayed one night, without having dinner and leaving too early for breakfast. The lodge is relatively new, and is situated in a nice garden with mature trees. It is a double storey thatch building with a large lounge, bar and dining room on the ground floor looking onto a swimming pool through a verandah stretching the full length of the front of the building. The four rooms are upstairs, accessed via an external staircase and opening onto a wrap-around balcony. There is an interesting outdoor, underground wine cellar. Downstairs the decor is "African Game Lodge." My room was nicely appointed with good linen and fluffy towels, comfortable double bed, lots of pillows, bar fridge, tea and coffee facilities (with fresh milk, nice touch). There are two doors leading into a large bathroom. My bathroom had a shower and no bath . Strangely the shower was in front of one door and the toilet the other - in line of sight of the double bed. You need to close the curtains on the french doors onto the balcony when using the shower or the toilet. I'd recommend reading the guest instructions before using the shower, because each room has its own gas fired geyser and the water pressure relies on a pressure pump. This means you must let the shower run for a little while until the pressure pump and the geyser both kick in. If you don't give the system time you could spend quite some time adjusting the temperature. What it does mean though is that there is plently of hot water and good pressure. Stefan and Judy are the owner managers, and although I didn't eat they seem to take great pride in the meals that they serve. Judy kindly packed a nice breakfast for my drive back to Jo'burg, since I had paid a bed and breakfast rate but would be leaving before breakfast was served. It was the off-season so I paid R375 for the night. I believe it goes up to R600 in season.

I have been at the Rose & Rooster Country Lodge on a business breakaway. All we wanted was some peace a quite and that is exactly what we got. It was so quite and peaceful with a fresh breeze, a great setup for re-energizing oneself. We had the whole house on our own in a middle of a farm. The food compares with the top restaurants in Cape Town and Sandton. There is a couple of world class golf courses around, e.g.Champagne sports Resort. I will certainly recommend it for more matured couples getaway, honeymoon or management breakaway.

Rose and Rooster Country Lodge was an excellent experience and a much needed break away from our hectic routine. The tranquility and ambiance of this quality lodge can only be appreciated when you see it for yourself. The rooms were excellent, well decorated and extremely clean. Our hosts Stefan and Judy showed us true South African hospitality. The roaring fireplaces in the lobby and dining areas were fantastic for the cold winter nights. There are alots of outdoor entertainment nearby.....very scenic drives. BUT, if you just want to spend some quality time with that speacial someone, then Rose and Rooster Country lodge is THE PERFECT ROMANTIC GETAWAY!! Kelvin and Sohana, Durban, South Africa.

We have just returned from a 17-day holiday in South Africa. Our first stay was at the Rose and Rooster Country Lodge in Winterton, a village in Central Drakensberg. The accommodation is fantastic: spacious rooms, a wonderful garden. Stefan is a great host. He serves tasty English breakfasts and dinners. We visited Giant's Castle, a great place from where you can go hiking. We also went to Falcon Ridge where a display of birds of prey starts every day at 10.30, except Fridays. Very recommendable!

This is a modern, elegant place. The pool is a feast for the eye, with a manmade waterfall at the end. You hear this fountain/waterfall at all times, it’s very peaceful and tranquil. The rooms are big, and there are two open doors to the bathroom, one on each side. This made us walk around in a circle in and out of the bathroom the first minute (yes, we know we are a little bit childish!). The B&B is very close to Monks Cowl, and The Amphitheatre is not far away either. The only downside we could find with Rose & Rooster, was that the lights in the bathroom gives a light that is a little bit cold. We don’t know if it’s better in the Honeymoon Suites, they look very nice on the pictures, but they were unfortunately already fully booked. Otherwise everything was very nice, and the manager Cornel went beyond normal service. Thank you Cornel!
