We were greeted by the family who run the lodge and they are all absolutely wonderful. We stayed at Montusi for three nights and wish we could have stayed longer. The lodge is beautifully located and is a great base to explore the Northern Drakensberg. There are also several hikes on the property. The cottages are very spacious and well equipped. There are heaters in the bathroom for cooler nights and winter days, a hairdryer, the lounge area has a TV and fireplace, the large beds are extremely comfortable and the private terrace is the perfect place to watch the sun set over the valley. A laundry service is also offered. The food was delicious and different every evening. We enjoyed the variety and nice wines. Be sure to stop by the bar and play a game of pool pre-dinner.…
My partner and I stayed at the Montusi Mountain Lodge as the first stop over on our holiday to South Africa. It was the perfect place to adjust to the relaxed South African pace of life and an unexpected delight. The sweet little cottages are very comfortable with the most wonderful views imaginable. The food is excellent and the helpful staff do everything possible to make your stay a great experience, including champagne, fresh fruit and chocolates in the room. They organised a surprise singing of Happy Birthday and a cake for my partner and also organised our full days hike to the top of the Amphitheatre (well worth the effort). Waking up at dawn to see the sunlight just touching the top of the mountains was a highlight of the holiday. All of the complex is beautifully…
This is a real gem of an hotel. Its location in the northern Drakensberg Mountains is to die for. You wake up and upon opening your curtains you have a full view of the magnificent Ampitheatre. Every one of the delightful cottages experiences this same fantastic vista. The cottages themselves are luxurious with a patio, fireplace, sitting room, huge bathroom and small kitchen area complete with fridge, sink and kettle. The furnishings are all superbly kept and the cleanliness is exceptional. The hotel is made up of the cottages, large public areas, swimming pool, bar and restaurant. The food was a set menu and the food was delicious. The staff impressed me with their enthusiasm and friendliness. The pool was very cold owing to the altitude of the hotel but surrounded by…
The most wonderful thing about this hotel is its position and its views - layer upon layer of mountains, close and distant, changing constantly in different light and different weather. But everything else is splendid as well. We had our own free-standing "cottage" with terrace, lounge, and two bedrooms each with en suite bathroom - for the price of a simple double room in most hotels - and incredible views from all rooms (sorry, have I said that before ...?). The food was imaginative and well served. The owners and staff were really friendly - even when we managed to lock ourselves out of the cottage with the key on the inside of the door, so someone had to climb in through a window. The range of walks straight from the hotel was splendid, including one leading to a cave with…
