Third time we have stayed here now. Friendly staff at check in. Mountain View chalet splendidly positioned and kitted out with all the essentials. A hikers and nature lovers paradise. Lovely walks and lots of fresh air. Can’t wait to come back here next year. Thank you for this national treasure of being able to stay very comfortably so close to the spectacular Drakensberg peaks.

This was a wonderful hike experience with spectacularly clear rock art to top it off. Amazing that this still exists. There is parking on site. There is an entrance fee and you can use the card machine to pay. Time your visit as they only open the entrance gate to the rock art every 30 mins or on the hour. So, you will first have to hike to the entrance gate. If you fit, you will hike for about 15 mins (depending on fitness level) before you reach the entrance gate to the rock art. If you arrive earlier and the steel entrance gate is closed, just hang around as the guide will come and collect you. The hike was very quiet and only saw one other family during our hike and visit to the rock art. There is a restaurant on site serving a variety of local dishes. The quality of the food and service is good. There is also a gift / mini grocery shop on site. There was unfortunately very little unique artwork and that which was on display you can find in airports for cheaper prices. It was also frustrating that the payment systems are not interlinked. If you purchase at the restaurant then you must pay at the restaurant. If you purchase at the gift shop then you must pay at the gift shop and if you want to give your guide a tip then you need to pay at reception (we had no cash to tip the guide during our visit to the rockart). So the concern we had is that every time we had to swipe our card we got charged exchange fees etc. So to make it smoother take cash.…

Giants Castle Reserve is stunning. The paths and trails are well maintained and sign posted. As a keen walker, I couldn’t ask for more! Stunning! As a resort... could do with a refresh. Breakfast was ok. We cooked for ourselves. Chalets are well provisioned. Could be as stunning with some further love and attention. I wanted to give 3.5 rating!!

Stunning location in the beautiful central Drakensburg Mountains. The chalet accommodation is superb, ours being nicely positioned up the hillside. They are very nicely equipped and furnished, very clean and set to maximise privacy. The food was good and the staff friendly. The area is absolutely magnificent with the stunning mountains dominating the views. Just a few of things to note 1/ The area has rare Bearded Vultures and Giants Castle has a Bird hide and feeding station available – the website doesn’t make it clear that to get to the Bird hide (with the bones you need to take with you) you must have a proper 4X4. My SUV was not able to tackle the trip but we did see the vultures flying overhead on one of our walks. 2/ There is no food to buy at Giants castle apart from sweet, biscuits and drinks etc, if you intend to self cater be sure to bring all your provisions with you as the nearest town is 60km away down a slowish road. 3/ Some of the hikes are serious walks, the times advised are quite tight so allow a good bit more. 4/ The road directions (from the north) whilst not incorrect are not logical as they bring you off the motorway a junction too early and into the town of Estcourt. We set the Satnav (Google maps) for Estcourt to get some shopping only to find when we eventually worked it out that we had to completely retrace our steps to get to Giants Castle (be aware also that Giants Castle is not recognised by Google Maps). Despite these things 5 stars are absolutely deserved for such a magnificent place to spend a few days.…

The location of the camp is stunning, so remote and peaceful with beautiful views. We were impressed by the camp facilities. The accommodation is basic but well equipped and very comfortable, and if you don’t want to cook the restaurant has a good range of options for dinner. I would love to visit again!
