When we got to Alpe Edelweiss Guesthouse on the evening of 23 December 2017,after more than 6 hours no the road, the owner told us that we have a problem as the guesthouse was full. This after we booked and paid in full 2 months prior to our arrival. She indicated that her computer was hacked and that she lost her data and she cannot help us. We had to drive around in Gariep looking for a place to stay and eventually found a place to sleep at Forever Gariep Dam. When I phoned the owner of Alpe Edelweiss to inform her that we found a place to stay and would like a refund of the money I paid, she blew her fuse and told me to stop phoning her. Another main concern with Alpe Edelweiss, other than the rude owner, is the fact that there is no parking for your car and caravan, you have to leave them in the street.…
Although clean and neat, there are no air conditioning in the rooms available. The bathroom is very small and suffocating. Not much space to for your luggage. Breakfast was what I expected and appetising. Owner is very friendly and helpful. Garden is tidy and neat, although garden furniture need an upgrade. Quite and average experience, but I personally wont stay there again.
The guesthouse was easy to find and centrally located in the Gariep village. The guesthouse comprises of large, prefabricated houses. It faces a quiet road and has a small, well tended garden. Inside, there is air conditioning, but only in the lounge area. There is a single pedestal fan provided for the main bedroom, but not the other bedrooms. The bathroom fixtures are very old and need replacing/upgrading. The towel rails are rusted, there is very little water pressure in the shower. The paint on the ceiling in the bathroom is peeling badly. The unit seemed clean at first when looking at floors and counters, however items like the microwave buttons and fridge were grubby. There is an old CRT TV with DSTV (the lowest package - basically SABC, eTV and the religious channels). We didn't see the owners/managers until checkout. The keys were left in a postbox for us to collect and the owners/managers were supposed to drop by but didn't. We paid a really low price, but wouldn't stay there again even for the low price.…
This is my second review and again I can't find fault with the guesthouse. It's a cheap clean establishment where you get what you pay for, usually just a bed for the night as you journey through the country. You can see that the owners are making a great effort on maintenance with new air-conditioning in some of the units as well as built in Braai areas dotted around. The guest house is easy to find with great signage and visibility on Google maps. It's 10 minutes from the N1 so easy to get off and on again to continue a journey. If you're looking for a quick stop over that's affordable and clean, with Karoo hospitality then I'd recommend this every time.
I have stayed in this B&B on couple of occasions. Every time I come back, there has been an upgrade done to the rooms, gardens, houses. There is a secure parking at each unit. You can also have a nice breakfast. Dinner can be requested and never disappoints. It is in easy reach of the Dam and shops. There are many units you can chose from, small apartment or a large houses for groups - the biggest one can accommodate up to 9 people! The owner is very friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about the area. I would highly recommend.
The unit is very basic and the beds are adequate. There is only one air-con in the lounge area, which is fine for that room, but the bedrooms are very hot. It is a pre-fab house -which seems to be the norm for the area, so it cools down reasonably quickly in the evening. There is a braai place outside. It is a big unit and there is secure parking, even under-roof. The photo on the website of the dam is not what you see from the unit, as the unit is on the other side of a hill.
Our family has been sleeping over at Edelweiss Guesthouse for the last ten years every time we head down to the Eastern Cape. The B&B has become part of our holiday memories, That being said the B&B has a lovely breakfast that never fails to deliver. The new owners are extremely friendly and always ready to help. The units are very basic and the beds are adequate. The rooms could use with some air conditioning during the hot December nights. Each unit is a full house on its own with plenty of room. Safe parking behind gates at each unit.
This has to be one of the nicest guesthouses I've stayed in. It's run by a friendly couple, who provide a great service. It's cheap at approx £10 a night, with a Full English available on request for £3. Dinner is also available on request and there's a little shop of home made jams, pickles and relish's that are so hard to find these days. Splendid place at a splendid price.
