Gariep is the perfect stopover between Gauteng and the Cape, 180 km south of Bloemfontein, just off the N1. Situated on the banks of Gariep Dam, the largest dam in South Africa, and bordering the Gariep Dam Nature Reserve, it straddles the borders of three provinces, namely Free State, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape. The caravan park consists of 106 sites, all with electricity and serviced by two communal ablutions and a laundry. There are also 16 luxury caravan sites each with their own ablution facilities. Accommodation consists of 44 two or three bedroom chalets newly refurbished, and 12 luxury one or two bedroom chalets. Our on-site restaurant, the Quenna Bistro, can seat up to 120 persons, and boasts a ladies bar and outside deck with a splendid view. Activities and facilities include: tennis and a driving range, fishing (own equipment), kiosk and swimming pool.

After visiting the on-site Bistro for a meal (outstanding) we decided to book a long weekend stay and we loved every single minute. Everything worked. Everything was spotlessly clean. The staff were amazing. We will most definitely be back.

Open Campsite with communal bathrooms: Beautiful campsite - well maintained and the bathrooms are just about cleaned hourly. This is truly worth mentioning as their standard is very high. Great showers too. The campsite itself is very beautiful with lots of shade, and enough green grass should you prefer. Enough braai facilities and water taps. What might be a problem for some is that the bathroom and toilets are quite far from the best camping spots, and the walk is uphill to get there. We were a group of 100 people, and just about every person mentioned that part. There is also a play park for the smaller ones. Campsite with private ablutions - beautiful and quite far from the open campsite. Well worth visiting, but quite cramped if full. Not a negative - just be aware. Visit the dam wall when you are there - a sight to behold when overflowing. (3 km from the campsite) A number of bird species and plenty that visit in the campsite. I didn't visit the chalets but be aware that the noise travels from the chalets (uphill) to the campsite - and it can be very noisy if you have noisy neighbours. But it is a holiday resort - so expect it to be noisy. Small food store just outside the park entrance, as well as a restaurant and bar. There is also a restaurant on the premises.

We enjoyed our stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The chalet was probably the cleanest accommodation we have ever stayed in, and we travel a bit. Due to Covid-19, the first thing we do after checking in is sanitize surfaces we are likely to touch. The sanitizer wipes remained clean after we wiped the surfaces, which is not normally our experience. We were impressed!!

Very good overall. The finishings are top class. However, there were a few things broken or not well maintained. But overall we had a very nice stay. Our view from this particular chalet was somewhat obstructed. But I will definitely return next time, depending on prices.

Even with bad weather the experienced of the moon shining on the water, a braai sitting around the fire and feeling the full force of the dam overflowing its walls and getting wet with spray made this weekend really memorable. We returned well rested after the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of the resort.

Went well except for an Unplanned > more than 12 hour Power Outage. Our food was partially heated in the microwave and I had to make a fire to continue heating the meal. We were in the dark for 12 hours until we left at dawn.
