My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of visiting Pleasant Places situated along the Midlands Meander! Samu at reception was very kind and accommodating. They had put our hot blankets on which was amazing when we climbed into bed as the weather was very cold during our stay. For breakfast we enjoyed a lovely selection of fruits, yoghurt and granola with fresh juice. The rooms are well equipped with all the essentials (no TVS) and smell lovely! We had a great view from the bathroom and the dining area. Housekeeping comes in each day to tidy the room which was much appreciated- they do have a little coffee and tea station in the rooms which is great for those late nights. We never had any issues (only a spider in out bathroom so keep your eyes peeled!) but Samu was so sweet, she managed to find us some boardgames to play. They do have trails you can wonder through and appreciate the greenery. You do have to drive through the township to get there but it is so worth it! Will definitely be back!

First and foremost the FOOD. The view from Room number 5 where I was staying is like looking into Nat Geo. This provided me a picturesque working backdrop as I still had office work that I was handling. Lovely staff and amazing hospitality, it felt like I was at my sisters house.

The staff was so welcoming and eager to help. From the date of arrival to the day we left. They also provided a car wash, twice even, free of charge. The food was amazing and was an experince on its own. Enjoyed the walking trails. A memorable stay.

Just the most beautiful and magical setting at the top of the hill. My husband and I were looking for a "special place" to stay for our last holiday together before our first born arrives and Pleasant Places was recommended to us. It will certainly be a memory with us forever and ever. Clean, warm and comfortable accommodation. Great hospitality. Delicous dinners and breakfasts. Freezing cold but wonderful walks along the river and in the forest. I can highly recommend this loving home.

John and Linda Hall were exceptional hosts. The mealtime conversations were fascinating--they answered our questions and provided us with an insight to living in South Africa that we would not otherwise have. The food was delicious and the surroundings were heavenly.

I have stayed here a couple of times and as in the previous review it is fabulous. The hosts, the breakfast, the accommodation, the staff, the cats and dogs, , the garden, the views and the surrounding area just does it for me. The attention to detail is flawless. Lovely place - a definite must if you are looking for a place to stay in the midlands!

We chose Pleasant Places B & B because John, the owner, was so prompt in replying to our email! We were attracted by the name especially as we were seeking some R & R after several days of hiking in the Drakensberg mountains. This turned out to be the right decision. The standard of accommodation was excellent, both in our suite as well as the rest of the property. Dining was first class, from the immaculate table setting to the quality of the food and service. Our hosts Linda and John proved to be friendly and helpful, and made excellent dinner companions. Nothing was too much trouble and we felt completely at home. In fact we ended up staying there an additional night. The overall value for money was first rate and provided a "gold standard" for the rest of our trip in SA.

After some good research, we ended up opting for Pleasant Places and couldn’t really have madden a better choice. Starting from reservation, we could experience the extremely care and real kindness John dedicates to his guests. He was so helpful and supportive on making us very comfortable. Then the place itself is beautiful, astonishing views and very comfortable and cozy rooms. Linda didn’t do less than having us at the same high standard with great food and all time kindness. They did even better than expected helping us to go around and sharing all histories around the table. Definitely a place to visit and go back!

We have just spent a delightful weekend in the KZN Midlands, and for us Pleasant Places was a perfect place to stay. Firstly, in terms of location, while slightly off the beaten track (4.4km from the main road, in fact), it is very central for exploring the Midlands Meander. And there are lots of places to eat (the whole gamut, from fine dining to el cheapo) within 10km. And you are only about 10km from the Mandela Capture Site and sculpture. (I can't understand why people aren't flocking from all over the world, let alone South Africa, to see it.)

Speaking of food, one of the highlights at Pleasant Places has to be the breakfasts: a range of fruit and cereals, followed by a full cooked English, with eggs done exactly as ordered (something of a rarity, in my experiences). We didn't eat dinner there—you have to order in advance (as another reviewer noted)—but for anyone staying for a few days it would probably be worth sampling. Based on the breakfast, I'm sure it would be a treat.

I suspect we had the best room, "The View", which is definitely worth asking for if there is a choice. In addition to a large king-size bed, the room is very spacious, and the underfloor heating was a treat. We were completely snug, when one has to say the weather outside was cold and miserable. But what makes this room really special is the setting: there's a lovely deck (which we didn't use obviously, because of the weather) alongside a spectacular old oak tree. In fact the room has a feel of being in a tree house.

Apart from a base to "meander", there are things to do on the property. I'm sure the walk down to the river would be lovely, though we weren't able to do it because of the weather.

So, overall conclusion? Heartily recommended, with lovely rooms and much more value for money than at least one of the other nearby "upmarket" venues that we popped into.
