This is a Colonial Structure, over 90 years old, completely remodeled. Rooms are air conditioned, spacious, and have hot showers. There are singles, doubles, and even triple rooms available. The hotel offers a van and driver. They will meet your plane in San Salvador. College Students who speak English are available for sighseeing and tours. The Tazumal Ruins are within walking distance. The hotel restraunt furnishes daily meals of your choice. Of the staff, 75% speak English. The hotel will send staff along with you on walking tours. Downtown Chalapupa is 3 blocks away. Lagoons, parks, and sight seeing are close. A city tour is available at night at no cost on wagons pulled by a truck. Rates are very inexpensive and you can run a tab on meals. Reservations may be made on-line, phone, or by mail.

A group of us (about 25)stayed here Dec. 26-29, 2014. I'm not sure about it being newly remodeled. Since I haven't seen it prior to our stay and the pictures on the internet are not good, I can't tell you what was remodeled, other than from the pics some things were moved around. The staff (I only saw two the whole time we were there) are very nice and accommodating and both spoke English. We had made prior reservations but when we got there they first said they couldn't accommodate all of us but then figured out a way to do it. They only have 12 individual rooms, but each room has a different number of beds in them. Some of the beds are more comfortable than others. The blankets on the beds are not very big, so we used the one off the extra bed we had in the room. Towels are supplied but no washcloths. Each room has private bathroom. Hot showers, but if you got a lot trying to take showers at the same time in their rooms, you lose water pressure, like down to a trickle, and hot water. The courtyard is very lush and pretty. We stayed in room #4 which is right on the road, it wasn't too bad noise wise and right by the wifi router so our connection was great. Some in rooms away from it had poor signal. Breakfast was fantastic, $3 pp. Ruth is an awesome cook! For 2 people per room it was $25 a night and for 3 or more people it was $35 a night. We will be traveling back to Santa Ana in May 2015 and we are planning to stay here again.

We enjoyed staying here - especially for the staff and the gardens. We will stay there again.

Here are the pro's: The gardens are in the center of a courtyard and the rooms encircle it. Lovely, with table and benches within. The staff, such as Ruth and others, are VERY accommodating and helpful. The breakfasts were good and ample. The rooms are large (though filled with beds) and it was mostly clean. And the price was good. (We have stayed in a nearby hotel, Tolteka, that try to be like American-style, and we ended up paying three times as much for a dismal experience). This is a very historic hotel - it used to be the home of a super-rich person, per the staff. They do have water and beer and soda available.

The mixed bag: Though the rooms are large, they fill them with beds (Our room had two double beds and a wardrobe and a table). There was a TV though we didn't watch. Our room had no chairs so we sat on the beds. Beds are OK - dented in the middle, not great, but not terrible. Air conditioning worked well. The shower wasn't completely clean. The sink was in the large shower, which was OK but odd. There was some deferred maintenance - a sink hose that dripped (into the shower) (Room 9), etc. Our friends who had a room on the street said it was pretty noisy and they had trouble sleeping. Also, when checking in, the manager was confused about whether we had enough rooms for our group. Their reservation system are some casual notations in a spiral notebook. Also, the neighborhood is a bit rough - if you go for one of the nearby pupusas, be sure to go in a group! There was hot water, but you may have to ask them to turn on the pump to get it.

But let me return to why I will be back. The gardens were so beautiful, and Ruth, the cook and de facto service manager, was a delight. If you show her respect, she will bend over backwards to help! Make no mistake, this is not a luxury hotel, but the price is good and it was quite good for us and our group. We look forward to seeing Ruth and those gardens again!

We had a large group stay that basically took over the hotel. The staff was more than accommodating and absolutely made this place. I cannot say enough nice things about the staff here. The rooms are simple and clean which was all we needed. Cannot wait to find an excuse to go back to El Salvador just to stay here again!

Was at an orchestra event and didn't want to drive back so I rang the bell and was greeted by a lovely gentleman who welcomed me in, helped me out.

This is more like a four star European boutique hotel rather than a hostel. The rooms are beautiful, quite, clean and big. The beds are amazingly comfy. The atmosphere is just what you would expect for this town. Stay here. Highly Recommend It. Oh and the wifi strength is great.

We spent 6 nights here and were very pleased with the accommodations. A/C, hot showers, very friendly and attentive staff. Very secure and beautiful gardens in the courtyard. We spent a couple of hours talking with Orlando, the owner. Within walking distance of Tazumal ruins--a must see and one of the southernmost ruins of the Mayan culture.
