This was our third stay at this outstanding waterfront B&B at one of the best whale-watching spots around the entire Walker Bay coastline. If you are here for whale-watching, there is nothing to beat the experience of sitting in your own room, watching southern right whales (and calves) playing in the water less than 200 yards away. In contrast to the usual whale-watching experience of spending hours seeing very little, from here it is a surprise to be unable to see any whales. Moreover, being in the De Kelders area means that you are away from the busy-ness and congestion of Hermanus (although also further away from its facilities, for which it's about a 40 km drive).

Gerhard and Alet are consummate hosts, who keep the property to an extremely high B&B standard. They treat you more as their guests than as mere customers - underlined by the number of repeat clients that they have from overseas. An ample (but not overwhelming) breakfast is served in the mornings; they know all of the local eateries well and can point you in the direction of the good, bad and indifferent. They also have contacts with the local tour operators (whale-watching and shark-watching) so can advise you about whether and when it is worth going out onto the water.

On this occasion, we stayed in their new Whale Suite, which has been built under the house. Although it was initially a little damp and chilly, the heater soon dispelled that. It may be a little disconcerting for some to have a large see-through internal window from the toilet and shower allowing direct views of the outside world, but few people ever come past the outside of the room and it is actually wonderful to be able to continue watching the bay even when using the facilities.

The other three rooms are more conventionally laid out. All the rooms are very well equipped (there is even a small safe in the Whale Suite - don't know about the other rooms). There is a shared lounge area for guests, with lots of books and information. There are also a viewing terrace and more open spaces below the house for viewing and relaxing. And you can easily walk out onto the shorefront and even onto the rocks to get closer to the sea.

The location is also very handy for a gentle 15-minute stroll to a perennial De Kelders favourite daytime spot: "Coffee on the Rocks" (next door to Whalesong Lodge), from where there is also great viewing and good food.

We only stayed one night at this B&B but enjoyed what we saw.
Gerard and Alet met us and showed us around the room. The main plus for this B&B are the views (if you stay in the Elmien Room). We watched the whales dancing about in the sunset from our balcony with a lovely glass of wine. In the morning you can open the blind, lie back on the bed and just watch whales leaping about (depending when in the year....)
We then had a very plesent breakfast before continuing out journey.
The foot path walk at the rear of the property is worth a walk. Lovely views of the sea.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at De Kelders B&B. Gerhard and Alet were so nice and welcoming and shared useful information about the area. As soon as we arrived we saw about six southern right whales right in front of their place and shortly after one of the whales began breaching and put on quite a show. Our room was very clean and comfortable and we had a great view of their garden and the ocean. From the B&B we could access a trail that goes all along the coast and we were able to see so many whales. It was a beautiful and easy hike. Alet and Gerhard made us a delicious breakfast and shared their knowledge about the whales and birds in De Kelders. I wish we could have stayed for more than one night but I am so glad we decided to stay here instead of a place in Hermanus.

We stayed there in November 2013. Our first trip to South Africa and not our last one. We arrived by car at the really steep street. We got a warm welcome and our hosts selected us a whale - that can be seen from the balcony. We got the separate apartment with a own, view. You just sit outside, listen to the ocean and watch whales. There is even a small trail to the coast - just 5 minutes walk with some benches, where you can sit and watch the sea and the whales, even listen to them.
The hosts are lovely - giving you tips where to eat out for dinner, even phoning the restaurant to get a seat. Making a great breakfast with eggs and local products and fresh fruit.
If we got another time to south africa we will sty there again.!

We stayed here for 1 night on our 4 week trip in South Africa. The weather wasn't too great (very windy) so the boats for white shark diving did not go out. We still enjoyed our stay here b/c of the magnificent views from this B&B and the super close proximity to the ocean (it's literally right outside your door!). Gansbaai is a small town, located at the coast of SA. De Kelders is a very nice place to stay with exceptionally lovely hosts. We stayed in the Elmien room, which has a view of the ocean. The room wasn't very big, but definitely big enough for us. There is a comfy bed, a large closet for your clothes and a small desk. Bathroom was en-suite with a nice shower and all was very clean. The B&B sleeping area is separated from the hosts' living area. Breakfast and welcome takes place in the common area of their house where you'll have the most amazing view from a living room ever: a panorama window overlooking the ocean. We even saw some whales passing by! We made a short walk along the shore and the area is breath taking! But what makes this place most special are the wonderful hosts: Gerhard and Alet are two wonderful people who take excellent care of their guests. We had several nice talks with them about Gansbaai, SA, their house (which they build!) and the history of the region. They take great care of people, and serve a good breakfast (complete with fresh eggs and bacon baked by Gerhard) in the morning. Toast, coffee, tea, jams, ham, cheese, fruit, cereals, yoghurt: everything is there. The location is safe and it's a short driving distance from the few restaurants Gansbaai has (we recommend Rosemary's which has lovely food). The hospitality and views are so nice here, we will def be back! Rooms are very affordable too - overall a great bed and breakfast.

Staying with Gerhard and Alet is certainly a pleasure. Their local knowledge is great and they are so informative and helpful it saves a lot of time, particularly when they go out of their way to make bookings for boat-based whale watching and/or shark cage diving The location is absolutely superb and the views are simply stunning.
The rooms are squeaky clean and more than comfortable. The breakfast is superb.
As a tour company we'll continue to use them while in the area

We stayed with Gerhard & Alet in October for 3 nights. It was a pleasure to stay in their beautiful home. They are such a lovely couple who are so friendly, helpful and informative and Alet arranged our whale watching boat trip which was a great experience. The view of the whales from Elmein room was fantastic - it was difficult to drag ourselves away - we didn't want to miss a moment of the "performance". Every time we looked out of the window/stepped out onto the balcony the whales were there!!! Breakfast was substantial, lots to choose from and the room was very comfortable with everything we needed. It was a shame we were only there for 3 nights. We will definitely visit again.

Whale watching in Walker Bay is best from De Kelders and this is the most wonderful place to stay while you do that. Alet and Gerard are like your favorite Aunt and Uncle and welcome you into their home. This was our second stay in this comfortable and homely house and we will be returning every year during whale season. Stay in Elmien's room and you will be able to lie in bed and see whale tails and spouts. Elmien is Alet and Gerard's talented artist daughter and I was delighted to purchase a few of her lively seaside silkscreen pictures. We dined at Benguela (also for the second year running) and it was an absolute pleasure. It would be worth going to De Kelders out of whale season just to eat there. Ask Alet to make you a reservation when you book. Enjoy!

We stayed at De Kelders during the winter season in hopes of watching the whales and we were very pleased we did! This was a great B&B with amazing views, great rooms, excellent breakfast and wonderful hosts! Upon arrival we were offered an upgrade to the Whale Room which was much appreciated. We had booked a whale watching boat trip the next morning and were disappointed to learn it had been cancelled because of very rough waters due to stormy weather. However, we were pleased to find we could watch the whales surface occasionally right from the comfort of our room through the windows. We even saw a whale breach in the distance! The next morning the weather had cleared a bit so we walked to the cliff edge to sit on the bench and watch from there. We wish we would have had the chance to go on the boat trip but we were pleased to be able to experience seeing the whales from the B&B. The Whale room was very large with it's own private entrance through the patio doors facing the water. There was a small electric fireplace which was much appreciated during the cold winter season. The room also has a small fridge, kettle and microwave. A binder with menus for nearby restaurants and a map is also provided. Only downfall of the room was that the ensuite bathroom is separated from the room by a swinging door and a large window looks into the bathroom from the bedroom therefore offering little privacy. The morning breakfast was provided upstairs in the hosts living area and was wonderful! They provide fresh to order eggs and meat, along with toast, fruit and yogurt. The host family are wonderful people who are very welcoming! Overall, we truly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this B&B to anyone looking to stay in the area.

Great place. Ask for room with ocean views. Family-like bed and breakfast. Amazing views on the ocean and on the whales. The owners are very helpful and they know a LOT about whales. Much quieter than Hermanus. Excellent value.
