Gavin & Penny Johnson must be amongst the best hosts in Africa! If you love, fishing, birding, peace & quiet, good bush accommodation, good food and wonderful hosts with friendly professional staff then Mutemwa is for you. Gavin & Penny, their daughters and staff went 'out on a limb' to make our stay the absolute best - and it was just that "the best" in every way. The surrounding area and the river becomes 'your world' when you are staying there - nothing is too much trouble and nowhere is too far to take you. Every aspect of our stay exceeded our expectations.
Mr and Mrs Gavin Johnson are remarkably gracious and most hospitable hosts. Their physical bush location combined with the couple themselves on River Zambezi is one place where Heaven meets earth. The facilities and persons are first-class and extradorinary in providing heart-led service. The boats and decks are in great condition on standby for leisure. Should you plan a bush and river excursion this is certainly a noteworthy establishment well equipped with wonderful owners, management, staff and all other elements required for your luxury time in Zambia.
This is not simply a lodge. It is the permanent home of a wonderful family, Penny and Gavin Johnson and their girls, and a stay at Mutemwa is a chance to share their amazing life. I cannot begin to describe the warmth of welcome or the lengths the whole family went to in order that our 3-night stay would be idyllic. I have to admit that I was a little concerned as clearly it is the amazing fishing in the waters of the Upper Zambezi that draws many visitors to Mutemwa...and Eric and I do not fish. But I shouldn't have worried as we never even saw a fishing rod! Instead, we enjoyed morning bird-spotting potters up the Njoko river, a beautiful meandering tributary of the mighty Zambezi, trips upriver to the Ngonye Falls, and even an exhilarating day cross-country bundu bashing to a beautiful corner of the countryside for a delicious braai. Clearly, there is nothing formulaic about Mutemwa. Gavin and Penny will tailor things absolutely to suit their guests...even if it means putting the fishing rods away for a day or two! I just wish that we could have stayed longer but our trip has whetted our appetite for seeing more of this area, and we need to come back when the waters are a little lower and the falls are more clearly defined. The accommodation was immaculate and comfortable and #3 had both privacy and a view to die for. Having said that, I think the same can probably be said for all the tents. The only comment I would make is that the road from Livingstone between Kazangula and Sesheke is not in great shape...though our trusty, ancient RAV4 coped admirably. If driving from Lusaka, you could consider coming the other way round through Kafue National Park and Mongu rather than via Livingstone. 800km or so but good roads virtually all the way except for a shortish stretch near Kaoma and even this stretch is not as bad or as long as the Sesheke road. And you could always break the journey with a stop in the park at one of the many lodges near the M9.…
Excellent time. Nice facility, but Gavin & Penny made it extraordinary. Enjoyed the meals, the companionship, the fishing, but most of all the trip to Ngonye Falls. A do over if we ever make it back. A must do for first timers!
