I have stayed at Alesches' 4 times with friends and family as a convenient hub for winter birding in the area. Sax Zim Bog is a designated Important Bird Area, especially known for winter birding when many Canadian species come south for the winter, but also home to rare and interesting birds and wildlife year 'round. It is bound to be cold in winter, so having a warm and comfortable home base is very important. We have stayed in the East Lodge that has two large, comfortable, nicely appointed bedrooms with a shared full bath, complete kitchen and dining area as well as living room space, all on ground floor. We have also stayed in the West Lodge which is a two story space with full kitchen, dining area and large living room and bathroom on the first floor and four bedrooms upstairs sharing a full bath, although one room has an ensuite full bath. Both lodges are clean, comfortable, and homey with ample space and privacy whether sharing with friends or complete strangers. The kitchen does have some staples for breakfast (coffee/tea, orange juice, English muffins, cereal, milk), but it's a good idea to bring groceries as this is a very rural area without a grocery store for many miles. There are two decent restaurant/bar/grill places within a 15 minute drive, and a newly opened community coffee cafe open 3 days a week currently. The innkeepers, Cindy and Mark, couldn't be more friendly and helpful, and they live onsite, so although there is not daily housekeeping, they are there to help with any issues. They have recently added another lodge and studio apartment that also look nice. Highly recommended!

What a wonderful home away from home! First of all, this place is far away from civilization and wouldn't be any where that you would be just passing by. It's a hefty 40 minutes west from Duluth. There are several configurations in the accommodations including cabin types, lodges and houses. Some contain communal kitchens and communal living rooms. There are some private baths. Prices are decent. Although not what you would call super modern, the houses are quite comfy, a good size and a wonderful log burning fireplace was lit at night. It was nice to sit for a bit at night and talk to others about your day, if you wanted to. It is impeccably clean. Reservations need to be made quite far ahead of the winter season as they get booked up early due to winter visitors looking for birds. My husband and I had a Queen size room on the second floor which was spacious and it included a private bath. The owner Cindy was very responsive to all our phone calls prior to our arrival. The kitchen had a full size fridge, microwave, stove, dishwasher, Keuring coffeemaker. It is highly recommended that you bring your own food as there is no local grocery store. Cindy puts out oatmeal, condiments and English muffins.

Stayed here for two nights while birding at Sax-Zim and found it a very pleasant accommodation.

We stayed in the studio unit which included a small kitchen. It was very comfortable and well situated to the bog. The owners made reservations a simple process, in spite of changes in our travel plans.

I expect to return.

One of those places that I almost hate to "share" with a great review, but they are such nice people with such a pleasant place. Getting busier every year with good reason.

Very cozy, clean with comfortable beds, northwoods decor and a nice kitchen/lounge area in each building, extensive property. Ideal location for Sax Zim Bog exploration (and often many birds of interest on site) Remote, but very homey- always a wonderful stay.

Sax Zim Bog is a birding Mecca in the middle of nowhere. Closest towns are Hibbings (30 min) and Duluth (45 min). There is literally no here here. No gas stations, grocery stores, convenience stores. Nothing. Except this wonderful lodge. It is clean, comfortable, and friendly. Each of the buildings has a kitchen, super comfy common area. If flying into MPLS-SP stop at grocery store for your supplies. There is one restaurant here and it is basically bar food. No breakfast. Here you are only minutes from the birding areas and can relax in a very quiet, lovely lodge and enjoy the food you like.

Beautiful place for birding or just to get away for the weekend. Close to many popular places to visit and only hours away from Lake Superior. The place is clean with all those necessary needs to stay.

This comfortable cabin setting has all the amenities of home! They leave some small food items, cereal, etc, and there are bird feeders outside the windows. Staff helpful and friendly. Everything is clean.

Room Tip: Many if the guests here are birdwatchers. Many folks rise before dawn and are out to their cars
