The gentleman that checked me in at the front desk was very courteous. He wanted my stay at The Itascan Motel to be a good one. He assured me they the room I was getting was clean. He explained the remote for the air conditioner. That came in handy! For one person, I ended up in a room that had three queen sized beds, room #17. Two were right there when you walked in, the other queen sized bed had a bedroom of its own. Room also had two sinks, a shower (no bathtub), a refrigerator, flatscreen TV, small microwave oven, and a coffee maker.

The decor of the room is a bit antiquated, but I didn’t have any problem with that at all. Actually, I found it amusing. When I stay at hotels/motels, I look for the “Three C’s.”

As mentioned above, the gentleman that checked me in was “Courteous.” The room I stayed in, #17, was “Clean.” I easily fell asleep because the bed and pillows were so “Comfortable.”

WiFi: After several attempts to connect, I gave up. Directions are taped to the inside of the room door.

Shower: The water got good and hot! Nice!

Air Conditioner: Works with remote. Seemed that the fan only had one speed, slow. I couldn’t get it up to medium or high. Still, even on low, it kept the room cool.

Smoking: One of the hotel guests was sitting outside of his room on a chair smoking. I was getting wafts of smoke as I brought things into the room.

Quiet: I slept so well, not only because the bed clean and comfortable, it was so quiet here during my stay.

Parking: I enjoy it greatly when I can park right outside my door! That’s always a plus!

Bottom Line: I’d stay here again! Thank you very much to owner/manager!

We were upgraded to a bigger, better room because of a booking mistake on the hotel's part. The person at the desk seemed a little reluctant about the upgrade, but did it. The room had a very comfy bed and thick carpet. Older but elegant furnishings, which I liked though I know that not everyone would.

Very inexpensive. Rooms were clean, if older. Beds were very comfy. By staying there we got a discount at a couple of restaurant. Bathroom was dated. No coffee or food in the office in the morning but the room had a coffee machine.

The carpet hasn’t been replaced since smoking was allowed because room has the overwhelming smell of 10-year old stale smoke saturated hell. My husband actually found it hard to breathe because of it. The carpet was once burgundy but, a lot of it looks black because it is so stained. They have cleaned behind beds or other furniture in what looks like years. There are holes in the walls & dirt was not vacuumed between guests even in the obvious open spaces. All this for $120. The wi-fi didn’t work. Last room available in town & I prepaid or I would have slept in my car after stepping foot in the door.

This place is a typical, very budget friendly, no frills motel. I booked a room there for a family wedding, that was scheduled during a weekend festival. When we arrived, we were told they had no record of our reservation, which I'd made in person by phone.
I knew the entire town was booked solid because of the festival (and having heard from other family members who tried getting rooms too late).
I was absolutely livid - but what can you do when the place says, "sorry" we don't have any reservation from you and no rooms available.
No excuse! Worst customer service ever!

Worst hotel I ever stayed in. They did not have the room I was supposed to get and the room they gave me had dirty soiled sheets with someone’s pubic hair. May they were running a brothel. Trash was not empty and the floor did not know what a vacuum looked like. I will never stay there again.

My experience at the motel has been nothing but pleasant. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and quiet. The managers are very kind and helpful.Along with the housekeeping staff. Motel is in convenient area with in walking distance of several restaurants and stores. You also get a discount at nearby restaurants stamped on the back of your room receipt. Motel is pet friendly also.

Boy, do I wish that someone else had posted a review of this motel before my mom & I made the mistake of staying there. The only reason we stayed instead of asking for our money back after seeing the room is that we got there fairly late & had already had such a long day that we weren't up for having to find another place to spend the night. My mom & I were driving the Mississippi River Road & looking for a cheap place to stay in Grand Rapids. We stayed at an Americinn the night before & decided we wanted to try a non-chain this night. The Itascan website (----) doesn't make it look like a 4-star hotel, but it makes it look like the rooms are clean, and it says that you get free breakfast. I called around & checked prices and also mapped the various independent motels--the Itascan was about the cheapest available (we paid 53.55 including taxes & fees, senior discount) and is also one of the only independents in town not located right by the train tracks. Problems we encountered:
1) When I was checking in, the woman at the front desk read the price I had been quoted to me and began to question it as if she wouldn't honor it. Presumably this is because I was given the sr. rate as I was traveling with my 73-year old mom and I am in my 30's, obviously not a senior, but come on. You don't question a rate that has already been guaranteed to a customer.
2) The room was FILTHY. There were cobwebs plainly visible below the shelf that the TV was on. My mom took her shoes off & found that the bottoms of her white socks were practically black after walking around for just a few minutes. We made a point of checking for bedbugs before getting into bed.
3) Noisy. The main north/south road through town goes right past the motel. We were even in one of the rooms furthest from the road, but it was still loud.
4) No free breakfast. Matter of fact, there wasn't even an employee in the office when my mom went to check, probably around 8 AM. Someone pulled up & started unlocking the door as we left sometime after 9. Oh well, I can only imagine what their breakfast items would have been like.

Live and learn. I'm no snob, this wasn't the first time I'd stayed in a budget motel, and I don't expect the Ritz for $50. I do expect better than this place, though. Their website & sign outside the building claim that it's newly renovated; if that's the case, I can only imagine what kind of shape it was in before.

Dear Trip Advisor, This review was written almost 5 years ago, and we have made many renovations since then. We have refurnished the rooms and try to meet all the needs of our costumers. Can you please remove this review, for it is written before we made the renovations. And now we make sure that the rooms are thouroughly cleaned. Also, this person recommended another motel, so it might've been written by them. Thanking you in Advance, Management of the Itascan Motel

This was a great motel and I will definitely come here again. This was my 4th time coming to the motel and I got my room at a really good price and I also actually received a lot of discount for food. I showed my key to the restaurants and they gave me a good discount for my food, which really helped since I drove to the town from the cities and used so much money for gas. Anyways, the staff was really helpful, and the room was clean and well placed. It was in the back of the motel and really peaceful. I only stayed for one day and I was definitely well rested afterwards.

This motel was very comfortable for me. The staff was very kind and the service was wonderful. I got one bed for one night at a great price . It had a fridge, microwave, coffeemaker, and cable t.v. But what was most convenient for me, was the bunch of restaurants and stores with in walking distance. It helped me a lot after the tiring day I had. Plus, I got discounts on my food by just showing my motel key. It was a great experience and I would gladly stay there again.
