We had a wedding there for our family.... We got up there, there was only one staff on site a maintiance guy who was walking around in sweatpants and no shoes, all the other staff had all quit because they hadn't been paying them for over 3 weeks. There was no electricity or running water. The meeting space for the wedding was not set up and was filthy, we were promised a cash bar .. there was no beverages in the whole place, we had to go out and purchase our own, we had to clean the place up ourself, set the tables, purchase multiple generators and a electritian so that we could have power, scrub the bathrooms ourselves, make the beds and clean the sleeping rooms our selves. The owner did show up and claimes that all of this is not his problem and that he is only contracted to give us the space and nothing else, since the sales manager who made the contract is no working there. Which is very incorrect, the contract was signed when the manager was an associate so the place has to abide by that contract, Since we had no running water we had to go out and purchase our own porta pottys! The owner said that we had to pay the full price for the meetings space (around 2 grand) otherwise he would throw us out! This place is a great place and has so much potential, but no one is running it, they are ripping people off left and right! The golf course hasn't been mowed in weeks, there is trash every where, the townhomes as you come in are unfinished and boarded up. I could go on and on.... Cancel your reservations!

Being a hospitality industry professional I was appalled by the sad state of affairs at the Wendigo Lodge. The last time I was here was in 2007 and the property is rapidly sliding into a morass. They are understaffed with poorly trained individuals. The room doors appear to be self closing but are not. One exit door was locked by having a chair jammed into it. you couldnt enter the building by any door other than the front because the card readers were torn off. They have a sign at the front desk that says to not keep your key card near your cell phone, I travel extenseivly and work in a hotel and have never seen or heard this before. The problem is thier system. The website is not updated. The internet acces in the room is wired not wi fi and was turned off the last morning of our stay. The indviduals setting up the continental breakfast were obviously not trained in food safety so we did not eat there.
The views of the North woods were spoiled by unfinished town homes, abandoned construction equipment and materials and garbage strewn about. This property needs to be taken over by a PROFFESIONAL management group. You will very upset if you stay here

Wow, it is hard to know where to start. The place does have so much potential-as you can tell from it's outdated website, it is beautiful but not kept up. We should have known by the unfinished townhomes that were left to rot on it's property and the overflowing trash cans that we shouldn't have stayed. We were there for a wedding reception and stayed one night. Everything was being run off a generator and the power kept going on and off. There were no lights in the mens restroom the entire time. There was absolutely no staff the entire time, accept for a housekeeper that said she couldn't stay her shift because she had been locked out of the office and no one was working. There was no breakfast, the hot tub was closed, and the pool was littered with all of the cleaning equipment. You can't make this stuff up. The worst part was that at about 10pm my 8 month old woke up hungry, went to make a bottle and realized there was no running water!!! Went to the machine downstairs and it was sold out. There was no staff, no water, and no way to feed my baby. Asked the owner for a refund and he said this wasn't a good enough reason??!! Wow-don't go near this place, what a nightmare. I was scared to even stay the night but didn't know what else to do, luckily another guest gave me a bottle of water!! I heard they are going into foreclosure..unfortunately not quick enough!

This place is very strange. You drive up a long road and come to a collection of buildings. There are very few clues as to where to go for a meal or whereto check in for a room. We went there to see if it was appropriate for a seminar. The entry to a beautiful building was sullied by overflowing trash barrels and debris in the snow. There was no obvious place to go so we stood there for a time until a person came. It did not appear that anyone else, customer or staff was in the building. When asked about a seminar with rooms and meals we were given tired soiled forms and vague answers. We did not go any further, just left with the opinion that this place is in serious trouble and we would not consider it until it has new management.

Booked a two night stay 3 months prior to our trip to Wendigo. First night was just okay, nothing to brag about. Second day our key cards were turned off early afternoon for all three rooms that we booked and there was no desk attendant at the check in desk to get the key cards turned back on. Called all 5-6 phone numbers listed on a sheet of paper at the front desk and left messages for assistance and not a sole returned our calls. We finally had to reprogram our own key cards to get back in our rooms after we waited approx. 5 hours for someone. They never did return our phone calls nor come to the hotel to help us out. I could go on forever with the terrible service at Wendigo but I don't have time and not enough space. The hotel was left open with no attendant or any type of staff on duty from early to mid-afternnon on our second day through the entire night.
DON'T STAY AT WENDIGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with another reviewer that this place should be shut down. I stayed there in July 2012 and we saw only one worker the entire time. I assumed he was the maintenance man when we arrived, but after staying there two nights, it seems he was the clerk, owner, maid, and anything else. The hotel ran on a generator. The pool was closed. There was no continental breakfast, no maid service, and no golf course to be played. Nothing was disclosed ahead of time and there was a "7 day cancellation policy". However, when we arrived, we were told that they were having trouble with the credit card machine and we would have to pay by cash or check. The rooms were not very clean and the sheets were gross. I wouldn't stay there again even if it was the only place left in town (which it was for us). I would be very surprised if this place didn't go bankrupt very soon as it will never get a repeat customer. It is too bad because you could tell it once was a beautiful facility.

Stayed this weekend...no electric, only generator power. Sometimes no running water. Generator would quit. No night staff. Owner very unfriendly, would not discuss these concerns this morning. No working pool or hot tub...drained tub and pool was locked up and green. They did not disclose anything ahead of time, made us pay at check-in. No continental breakfast other than old bagels and dry cereal with no milk. No open restaurant or bar, golf course not mowed or staffed. Really sad, could have good potential. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY, stay somewhere else, this hotel is filing for bankruptcy (according to some informants).

We booked the room after seeing it on the internet. When we arrived and went to our room we could not believe the condition of it. My wife and I had to change sheet's on the bed's they were full of hair!!!!!. The front desk people were worthless they had nothing to offer I had to go in the laundry room and get sheet's and towels myself. The owner's grand kid's have a room or two on the first floor maybe they should just close the entire place down so they can raise more hell there.

Staying at Wendigo Lodge & Conference Center should be a wonderful experience. The lodge and rooms are very nice, the golf course is the best in the area and reasonably priced, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. But our night there didn't turn out that way. The people in the room next door kept us awake much of the night. They were yelling obscenities during much of the time, slamming doors both to the hallway and the patio, and banged against the wall of our room something hard like a golf club or baseball bat. The facility is no smoking but smoke was billowing out of this room and into ours during much of the day and night. And, to top it all off, walking by the door once when it was open, we noticed about five or six shotguns and/or rifles stacked up by the door. We felt threatened by this coupled with the drunken behavior. We complained numerous times to the staff but they seemed unable to address the situation. The following day we found out why. One of the occupants of the offending room was the resort owner's grandson. The staff's efforts to deal with the situation were undermined by the untouchable status of the room's occupants. I will never stay at this facility again and will advise everyone I know to also stay away, until it is under new ownership. What a pity this is because it is a wonderful facility.

Based on the website, this would be great place to vacation and serve as home base while visiting relatives. However, the website is a FRAUD. There is no restaurant/bar, the 6-10 a.m. breakfast does not exist, there are no front desk personnel during the hours 1730 hours to 0900 hours, the room air conditioning is eradict and the premises are generally unkept (cigarette butts are everywhere). This place gives Grand Rapids a very bad name; next time I will stay in Deer River.
