Historic Birch Lodge provides 2 lodging options. The Inn at Birch Lodge was built in 1912 offers classic resort amenities and exceptional service combined with modern comforts. The Motel at Birch Lodge was built in 1964 and offers Lakefront lodging in a mid-century modern masterpiece of architecture.
Beautiful historic hotel with adorable 1960’s themed motel on the property as well. I coordinated a family reunion at this resort. All together we had three rooms in the lodge and three rooms in the motel. This was a fantastic place to stay! With the two separate buildings, the prices fit most budgets. We loved the adorable mid-century modern motel rooms with so many little touches that made them just right. The rooms in the lodge were incredibly beautiful and decorated to keep them in the style of the original time period. Our suite, number 12, was so beautifully decorated! The bathroom was amazing both in layout and little touches. The double shower makes us want to renovate our own bathroom! The mattress was very comfortable, so comfortable, in fact, that my sister and brother in law are planning to buy that brand for themselves after spending the week in number 4. The sitting room was a comfortable place where we could relax and chat. Jim and Carol are very kind and helpful hosts. Extra blankets, extra firewood, dishes or silverware for food that you bring, they are committed to ensuring that you have the best time possible. The fire pit was our gathering place every evening, and Jim kept us supplied with plenty of firewood. The private beach was small, but more than large enough to accommodate every visitor in the hotel should they all decide to use it at once. The trail through the woods was lovely, and gave us a welcome respite where we could hear nothing but the train whistle and the birds in the trees. The lake was so beautiful, peaceful, and quiet, the small pier in front of the hotel was a calming place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. The location is central for most Notable Northern Michigan destinations such as Taquaminam Falls, Whitefish Point, St. Ignace, Sault Saint Marie, and Munising. In Trout lake you can get groceries at the market or have meals at the Buckhorn or the family restaurant. Overall, we will absolutely be back! We may even come in the winter to enjoy ice fishing and snow shoeing.

Our stay at the Birch Lodge exceeded every expectation! This beautifully maintained property has every thoughtful detail you could possibly need -- beautiful rooms decorated with historical photos from the property, comfortable beds and furniture, a well-appointed en suite with the fluffiest towels, a small refrigerator and all the tools for a perfect cocktail. There are books, games, paddleboards, kayaks, walking trails, fire pits and many more thoughtful amenities, all complimentary to enjoy. So many places to sit and read or enjoy the sunset. Breakfast each day was lovely, and the morning of our bike race our host went above and beyond to make sure we had plenty of protein for our ride, whipping up a couple yogurt parfaits. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer! Be sure to love on Jack the wonder dog when you visit -- he's a special guy!

After a bit of time wandering off course, we found Birch Lodge tucked well off the road and on the edge of a quiet, lovely lake full of bird calls. No jet skis, no obnoxious partiers, just bliss. The lodge is beautiful and the owners are very obviously doing all they can to restore it properly. We stayed in the motel which has faithfully kept its mid-century charms, including brown, green, and orange colorways and vintage bedroom sets. Cable is a bust, so put away the remote, go down to the lake and listen to the loons. Or go into the lodge and admire the historic quality of everything you see. Truly a one of a kind stay I would repeat without hesitation.

Beautiful grounds with wildflowers natural setting. Old canoes had been painted white and used as planters so creative. Inside beautiful historical details large doors, original knobs and hinges. Tall ceilings with beautiful paint soft blue. Bedding was so wonderful I didn't want to leave the room! So soft. Large bathroom with top-of-the-line chrome finishes and penny tile. Walked over to private little beach with Adirondack chairs. Next morning had oatmeal, fresh muffins hot out of the oven, fruit and wonderful coffee I never drink more than one cup but went back for a second. Very peaceful setting highly recommend will go back.

This was the best stay I have ever had! We were running late and got a call from the owners just to make sure we knew their grills would shut down soon because they didn't want us to be hungry if we were out and about and not already at dinner! Then when we got there, we got a late night tour of the lodge, Jim plugged in the jukebox for us to dance in the hall, just the two of us, and his dog, Jack, was a great greeter. The room was insanely comfortable, clean, and the property is gorgeous. We definitely are planning another trip just so we can come back to this lodge! They were just the most down to earth people with a great Lodge.

What a great experience! My spouse and I spent two nights in the restored mid Century motel which is next to the lodge. Our views of the lake were perfect and our room was spotlessly clean. All the mid Century touches were just right, but the beds, linens, and amenities were up to date. The Lodge has been refurbished. The lobby and the dining hall are beautifully period (1912). The rooms are theme decorated and the formerly small rooms have been enlarged to be spacious and comfortable. The owners (and their dog) are welcoming and accommodating. Breakfast is basic but good. Lawn games are available and boats and kayaks are free to use. We will be back next trip to the UP.

The Birch Lodge on Trout Lake is fabulous!! This historic lodge has much of the original charm that it had when it was built in 1912. It is incredibly relaxing and charming!! You can use one of the free boats to row on the lake, sit on the beautiful lawn, gather around the fire pit, relax on the small private beach, play billiards, or listen to one of the vintage jukeboxes. The sunset at the lake is lovely. The rooms are beautiful. We stayed in the King Suite with the lake view, and it was amazing, with the biggest, 2-person shower we’ve ever seen. There are a couple of small eateries in the town, but there are more options in nearby Paradise, MI. The hosts are exceptionally friendly and accommodating. A special thanks to host Jim for his incredible kindness and humor when we made a very last minute reservation when our planned lodging fell through. We highly recommend this truly relaxing place.

My husband and I stayed at the Birch Lodge Motel and this is a motel from the 60's that has been refurbished and updated. The bathroom was beautiful, soft towels, great water pressure in the shower, the bathroom window could have had a privacy window film applied on it to allow the light to come in and provide a bit more privacy. I have back issues so the bed, to me, wasn't very comfortable. My husband slept fine. They give us some wild flowers in the room, which was a nice touch and they had bottled water and snacks free in the room too. That was very nice as well. It was a beautiful setting with Trout Lake right outside the door. they had a bonfire ring with seating by the water and kayak's and canoes to use without any extra charges. A nice dock to fish from was available too. In the morning they had a few snacks but were still working on remodeling the Lodge to have a full service dinning room. It Is Beautiful! We were able to tour the rooms in the lodge and they are so nice! Large bathroom with a sitting area and a beautiful bedroom. I will definitely visit the Birch Loge and Motel again.

Birch Lodge was like stepping back in time except we had Wi-Fi! My husband and I stayed in a lake view room and it was beautiful and immaculate. The lodge has been completely restored and attention was given to the smallest detail. It was a wonderful nights rest and I would have been completely content to stay longer than our scheduled visit. This was our first trip to the UP. The lodge would be a perfect place for a wedding or family reunion.

I absolutely LOVE this place. It is a beautiful spot right on the lake. We stayed in the motel and really enjoyed it. When we go back in the summer or fall, I want to stay in the lodge so I can experience that. The motel room decor is authentic 60’s. The little extras (chips, candy, soda, bottled water) that are in the room are an added bonus. Jim & Carol are great hosts. They provided coffee, fruit, and danish in the lodge during the morning. We were very fortunate that Carol was able to give us a tour of the lodge. The history of the lodge is fascinating and many gorgeous antiques are throughout the lodge & rooms. The lodge rooms each have different themes. We spent our days ice fishing and snowshoeing around the property. Looking forward to going back!
