My husband and I like to stay in historic hotels that aren't cookie cutter and realize they will show some signs of age, use and imperfection. We read the online reviews of this hotel and were a little concerned but loved the location for walking to attractions, restaurants, shops, etc. We decided to take a chance. The positives- our room was spacious, clean and quiet. The beds were really comfortable, we had plenty of toiletries, towels, etc. We were given a parking tag for our car and the lot was adjacent to the hotel. In fact we only moved our car once we left as we could walk to everything in town. The hotel is immediately in front of the locks and it was so interesting to watch all of the activity at the water. The negatives- the "free continental breakfast" was in fact not "free" nor "continental" but in fact an a la carte menu which cost extra. This was mentioned after we had already checked in and I had casually asked where breakfast is served. Apparently the policy had changed "one week ago" even though it was printed on our receipt and is currently still advertised on the hotel's website. This was not okay with us since we were staying multiple days. After a discussion with the front desk manager we were given a discount on our room fees. We did eat breakfast one morning and the lone waitress (shout out to Kay who was fabulous) was harried, running in circles trying to wait tables, ring up tickets, bus tables and help the newly hired teenage cook prepare food. She's a keeper and always had a smile on her face, but I wonder, without any additional help, how long she will stay. The hot tub was not working and the swimming pool water was cold and the water did not look clean. These are still advertised on the website as well. Plus there's a funky smell in the lower level where they're located. The hallway carpets are really stained and kind of gross. We wondered if they couldn't simply be cleaned? This hotel shows so much promise and I realize it's under new management/ownership but it does have WYNDHAM in its name and there should be some expectation of appropriate services, appearance, and training of staff. We're rooting for this hotel to make it.

Hello Cindy, Thank you very much for leaving a review of your most recent stay at The Hotel Ojibway. I am very sorry to hear that not everything met your expectations, but I am grateful for your understanding. We have many plans to update the property, including those carpets (which are cleaned routinely, they are just stained and need replacing) and the pool area as well as some aspects of the rooms themselves. I am glad that Kay served you well and that we could make an adjustment to compensate for the miscommunication on breakfast, but again I really do apologize because we want our guests to really enjoy their time here. I am glad your room was quiet and clean, and that you enjoyed our downtown location. Hopefully, if you are in the area again, you could check us out for some updates!

Over all this old historical hotel was a good choice for us and we would stay here again. We would request a room not on the forth floor though! Our room had slanted windows with pull down blinds that did not block out the light. We were awake by 5:30am! Still we loved the location across from the locks with restaurants and shops within walking distance. Park your car and leave it because non guests use the parking lot too and it fills up. Last but not least as of July 2021 the area has a severe shortage of workers affecting the whole town. The hotel’s restaurant & bar are still closed. Breakfast is a grab bag with a muffin, yogurt & drink.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your most recent stay at the Hotel Ojibway. I am very happy to hear you and your family would stay here again! It is a pleasure to receive such great marks. I do see what you mean about the windows, and I would suggest requesting a room without "studio windows" is what we call them. We have plenty without them, hopefully that will improve your stay next time. The restaurant is opening in the beginning of August as well, just so you know, so hopefully you can get the chance to enjoy The Charley Noble bar and grill next time you are in the area. Thank you again, and we anticipate your next arrival, thank you for the great review! -Rachel Farina, Front Desk Associate

Location is perfect for visiting the locks and there are several restaurants within walking distance. Our first room on the fourth floor was in really bad condition and even worse, someone had recently been smoking in it. Complained to the front desk and was then given a room on the second floor with an apology. Upon entering it was a hundred percent better, but still not great. Bed pillows are small and old and bed skirts don’t fit the beds and just hang down. The furniture looks like what you would have in your granny’s bedroom at home, I guess fitting in to the old elegance vibe. One of the wall vents in the room was disgustingly dirty. The bathroom does look recently redone. Breakfast was grab and go that included a yogurt, muffin, and granola bar. No fruit ☹️. There is coffee in the lobby as well as a small pot in the room. First floor of the hotel is torn up for remodeling and the restaurant is closed for remodeling as well. Think they should have started with the rooms. This hotel was recommended in our tour book, so I am not sure what happened. I wanted to rate this hotel a poor, but all things considered it was okay, but would not stay here again.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your most recent stay at The Hotel Ojibway. I am very sorry to hear that your trip and stay did not meet your expectations. Your thoughts definitely are valuable to us, as I will mention your review to our management. We are beginning hotel renovations, including the furniture, vents and HVAC systems, and restaurant. During the summer season it has been difficult to get a fast pace with the rooms, since we are still needing to sell rooms out. However, this fall renovations will be able to resume, so if you are in the area again, it would mean a lot if you could just come check us out and we could have the opportunity to service you better. Thank you again!

This is one of the best places I have stayed at! I stayed here about a month prior to this, as I was here on business. I had to come back again, but this time I brought my family. Every single employee at this hotel goes above and beyond to make sure your stay is top notch. The room was super clean, the food was awesome! The white fish is fresh from the lake and everything was made by scratch. Even the owners were helping out staff and making sure our stay was nothing but the best. I forget to mention about the freighters going in and out of the locks that you could see from our room. Thank you, thank you and thank you to all of you for making our stay so memorable.

This hotel was just recently taken over by new owners, and I understand it may have been closed for a while before that. Not much has been done. We chose it because it was in the downtown area, easily accessible to the places we wanted to visit. Our King Deluxe room was at least clean, and the bed was comfortable. Luckily we had only planned to stay 2 nights. The coffee pot was in the bathroom, and there was only one plug, so you had to unplug that in order to use a razor or the hair dryer. The room itself had one floor lamp by a corner chair, and two night stand lights, so there were dark corners everywhere else, and no plugs available to plug in anything. They did have a small square on a night stand with 2 charging plugs. The bathroom was small and basic. I do wish hotels would consider seniors when they design or remodel bathrooms, and put in safety or grab bars on the wall of the tub/showers. Our balance is not good as it used to be.
The carpet in the hallway and the elevator was so full of stains and was frankly disgusting. The staff were pleasant and helpful, except that they neglected to tell us that the following day the restaurant would be closed (on a Tuesday?) which was where we had planned to eat breakfast and dinner that day. It was pouring rain, and we had to walk some distance to find a restaurant open for breakfast. The only way I would ever stay there again is if they totally remodel the entire hotel!

Hello Anonymous, Thank you very much for leaving a review of your most recent stay at The Hotel Ojibway. I am very sorry to hear that not everything met your expectations, but your comments will certainly help us to improve. I am glad you liked the location, the staff, and the cleanliness of the room during your stay. We are really focusing on those aspects until we can get more renovations done. We had started only a few, including new mattresses, some new furniture in the rooms, and the HVAC systems. We have many more planned for public spaces, bathrooms inside the rooms, and some of our conference spaces! We are very excited to get some aspects up to date, so maybe you could swing by to see any changes in the future. Thanks again.

The location of the hotel is PERFECT! We had a deluxe guest room with a bedroom w/ jetted tub, and a “living room” with pullout couch. It was my husband and I with our 2 kids (ages 10 & 11). The room was plenty large enough for all of our suitcases to be open, and to move around with plenty of space. Each kid took a bath in the jetted tub which was great to have after a cool, rainy day of walking around. The location is AMAZING! The hotel was clean, and every staff member was so kind and helpful! It made for a great stay. My husband would have like to stay there one more day and drive from there to other UP attractions (it’s only an hour from Tahquamenon Falls).

This is a very interesting historical building with lock views. The beds in the rooms are double beds, not queen. The beds were somewhat comfortable, the bagged breakfast was just OK, the casino shuttle was convenient. The rooms are showing their age. The water pressure was not great, and the showers are not made for tall people.

On a more personal level, we had booked 2 rooms and made reservations for my parents' 50th anniversary, as they requested for the views. Upon arrival, we were told the restaurant was closed due to mismanagement from a previous manager. They tried to make arrangements for us to order from a sister restaurant in the area, which we could have delivered and eat in our rooms, or in the bar. The entire restaurant area was rented to a family reunion group who seemed to have taken over the place. The bar does not afford the same views as the restaurant, so this option was not ideal. One of the rooms we booked was given to someone else, and we had to sacrifice our king room and instead put my parents in a room with two double beds, and no view.

Hello Jennifer, Thank you for taking the time to review your most recent stay here at The Hotel Ojibway. I am sorry to hear that not everything went the way it was planned and did not meet your expectations. I do apologize about the closure of the restaurant and bar, and that the view from our new space is not the same as our last space. The hotel has new owners, and they are aware that the previous owners allowed the place to become outdated. We are doing many upgrades to the property and the new bar space, but the renovations only recently started. We hope progress will start to show soon to improve the stay of our guests including new mattresses, furniture, TVs, and HVAc systems. I apologize again about the issues and missed reservations! These problems will not be ignored to ensure it does not happen like this in the future for your family or any guest. Thank you again for your comments!

The hotel location was fantastic. It is located directly across the street from the observation deck and locks. Also within walking distance to several places to eat, small shops, and ice cream. Parking was great in a large lot located behind the hotel. The front desk clerk was friendly and informative. There is a bar open and located next to the front lobby that serves drinks and appetizers. The free breakfast was your typical hotel breakfast, grab and go sandwiches, cereal, fruit and yogurt.

The cleanliness of the hotel could have been better. There was a strong odor of old cigarette smoke on the 5th floor. Our room had a very stained sofa bed with a hole in the cushion. One of our beds did not have a sheet or covering over the box spring/mattress support. There were crumbs from previous guest on the carpet when we entered our room. Our windows did overlook the park and locks but there was not a decent view due to mature trees. If you are looking for a view of the locks from your hotel windows I do not believe you would have one from this location.

This is more akin to a roadside motel than a three star hotel. Room was advised as 289 square feet, went with the larger because I was traveling with a family of four. Was 170 and cramped (I was annoyed so I measured). Breakfast not included, despite stating repeatedly it was. Vents were dirty. Lamp shades and curtains were broken. Sauna was out of order, hot tub was out of order but not blocked off making pool area unusable. Pretty sure the carpets haven't been washed since Barbara came to visit, felt dirty just walking on them. Great downtown location though, staff was friendly. Just if you were expecting a relaxing weekend getaway with any sort of amenities, you'd be better off going just about anywhere else.

We were greeted by friendly and helpful employees that made sure that we knew facts about the local area, where to eat for the foods that we wanted and places to visit. Our room was very clean and comfortable and we had a river/locks view. In the heart of everything without making you feel claustrophobic. We only wish that we could have extended our stay.

Hi Kraegel, yes we are open for business! We have a 15 page covid response plan in place and some of the steps we have taken include: social distancing reminders in our public spaces and elevators, plexiglass at our front desk, all high touch areas are sanitized a minimum of every two hours, we have discontinued our breakfast buffet and only have grab and go prepackaged items, all guest rooms are sanitized with Lysol products, and multi guest use items such as tv guides etc have been removed from the rooms. The UP is beautiful this time of year and the boats are running all day. Hope to see you soon!
