Detailed Reviews
If you're looking for fancy and pricey don't stay here but if you're looking for good old fashion friendly hospitality stop in. Older mom and pop but clean and being updated. Charkes and Tina, the owners, are the best, friendly and accommodating, always had clean towels and anything else we needed. No pool, no breakfast but great place to rest and relax, out of town a bit in the country. Fridge and microwave in room. Spacious grounds to enjoy being outside. I recommend this motel, made our honeymoon trip great!

My sister and I stopped here on our way up to Canada. We were a little concerned when we first pulled up, as the exterior looked a little shabby, and there was a group of people hanging out outside one of the rooms that looked like maybe they were too large a group to be staying there on vacation, so we kind of wondered if maybe we'd accidentally got the kind of place people rent by the week. In the office, we were greeted by two small dogs.
However, once we actually got into our room, it was fine. We didn't experience any noise problems or anything (and later, there was no further evidence of any large groups of people hanging around outside the place). The room was clean and in good repair, and everything was as advertised, including the wireless and refrigerator. One of the beds squeaked a little when you moved on it, but it was the third bed off in the corner, which we didn't actually need, as there were only two of us.
The decor wasn't trendy, and there wasn't complimentary breakfast, but you don't really expect those things at this price point.
The tub was a little narrower than average, but it made up for it by being deeper than average as well. The temperature adjustment for the tub and shower was one of those ones where a single control handles both the amount of water and the temperature, which is always a little fiddly, but after playing with it for a minute I was able to figure it out and get any temperature I wanted.
One caveat, there was no ice machine, so we had to stop somewhere else for ice. However, I don't think this was a problem specific to this establishment -- every single place we stayed at on the whole trip either had no ice machine at all, or had a small one that you could just use to get ice for drinks and not to fill coolers. I guess taking coolers full of ice on vacation is a thing that just isn't done this far north? Not sure.
Also, despite the fact that it was June and over 60 degrees outside, my sister insisted on trying to turn on the heat (she'd been in Miami the week before...), which of course made the room much too warm until we turned it back off. But honestly, I can't blame the motel for this. What did she think was going to happen if she turned on the heat in June?
The location is great -- easy to find, far enough outside of town to not be in the city, but close enough for convenient access.

This place is not really in Sault Set. Marie, but several miles south. It's not just old, it's in pretty bad shape, which I could have overlooked if it were clean, but it was not. There was garbage under the bed and big dust bunnies in the corners. The floor is laminate that is coming up in places, so it's a tripping hazard. The wood toilet seat had a big crack, ready to break any moment. The sheets were threadbare with lots of stains, and there wasn't a light bulb in the outside light, so it was very dark. So many other negative things, but too much to list. We were glad we were only there for a few hours to sleep and then on our way west.

This is a great couple that runs the hotel. Very nice rooms. Watch out for the crazy woman in room six that runs out in the dark and tells you how to park your vehicle. She is very dangerous because she runs in between vehicles in the dark and pounds on your window while your vehicle is moving. I think she has brain damage and does not realize what she is doing, but please be careful of her recklessness. Other than the crazy woman and parking near room six, this is a great place to stay.

This is a family atmosphere hotel. The rooms are super clean and large. The mattresses are excellent. The free Wi-Fi is excellent and secure. The price is great. Tina and Charlie are the nicest folks. The Sunset Hotel feels like a resort in the north woods.

Originally had reservations for Days Inn, then the Park Inn. Finally settled on the Skyline Motel. Glad we did!
Co-Owner Tina greeted us at the front desk and could not have been nicer. After simple check in, room 11 key was given(real key!). Room 11 is very large, with 4 beds in it, 3 queens and a twin. TV, mounted up was 27" with great picture. As pictures provide, room is not only large but very clean. Wifi signal was fine.
For those either set on name brands or feel that the property might be a little too far out of town, remember the following: First, you will save $$$ and not feel like you are giving up an arm and a leg to do it. Second, with the interstate one block away, although property is 5 miles further than others, speed limit on highway is 70, so we're talking 4 mins longer only each way.
Overall, would recommend to anyone staying in the SOO!

+1
When traveling, I try to avoid the bland and sterile chains and stay in local mom-and-pops whenever possible, as each one has its own personality and character. If one were to choose one word to describe the Sunset, it is "rustic".
The Sunset is quite literally in the middle of nowhere. When it was built it was on the main highway, but Mackinac Trail has long been superceded by I-75 a mile or so to the west and is nothing more than a county road. The Sunset is not a place one would randomly stumble upon; you have to be looking for it! The fact that it is a remnant of the pre-Interstate era adds to its charm.
We had the infamous room #6. (No crazy woman.) Both the exterior and interior are something out of the 1950s. All rooms open outside to the parking lot; you can park right in front of your door! The room is not at all fancy; simple and straightforward. We had two beds, refrigerator, television, microwave, coffeemaker- the basics you expect in a motel. Space is used efficiency, so it is a shower and not a tub in the bathroom. The floor is vinyl and not carpet, which makes sense given the rural location. Room was clean and quiet.
This is a family run place, mother and son, who stayed up to wait for us (we were the last to check in); they actually called me by my first name, as if we had known each other our entire lives! Nice personal touch.
This is a budget motel, and is what I expect from one. Unlike the chain budget places, I did not feel unsafe or worry about drug deals or prostitution going down. I would stay here again.

Nice little out of the way place. Quiet and very clean, it's an old motel but you can't beat the rates and the beds are comfortable. Lots of parking and they can accommodate boats as well. There were several bass fishermen there while we were there and we didn't hear anything.

There were 4 adults and 2 children so we wanted a larger room. This one had 3 double beds which we thought could work. Size wise it was great. The double bed in the corner fell through the frame so we had to make repairs before using it. The outside of the building is in disrepair. The over all feel was dirty and not a place you would feel comfortable. We would not stay here again.
