My family stayed at Makgabeng for my daughter Gugu's wedding.
From the lodge we could see the Makgabeng plateau and it made for an excellent view.
The rooms were clean and air conditioned...
I really had a wonderful experience.

This was our second visit with Lorraine and Fortune at the Makgabeng lodge, and we enjoyed it as much as we had a couple of years ago.
They continue to work on improving their offer of activities, have built a boma so that guests can sit outside and watch the stars and the Milky way while sitting by a roaring fire,
The food is freshly prepared with many ingredients picked in Lorraine's own organic garden, and the warm welcome from the whole staff is simply heartwarming.
As I mentioned on my first review of the lodge, this is an off the beaten track destination where you won't find many Westerners but you will get an authentic experience and get to discover amazing places that few tourists have ever been to.
We climbed the Blouberg mountain and discovered beautiful rock pools and waterfalls, participated in the repainting of a local school on Mandela Day with paint donated by the Makgabeng Lodge as part of the many community projects they are involved in, visited again the many rock art caves of the Makgabeng plateau etc...
Thank you to all of you at the Makgabeng Lodge, we will be back again!

We were on our fourth trip to South Africa and our third one in the Limpopo province. We decided to visit the Makgabeng plateau bear Bochum, about an hour's drive from Polokwane. The Makgabeng plateau is renowned for having some of the most interesting rock art in the country.
We flew into Polokwane, an easy drive to Bochum where the lodge is the only accommodation in the area.
It has recently opened and has created much needed employment for local people in an area not on a regular tourist route.
Makgabeng is for people who are interested in exploring the country further, but first time visitors with an interest in rock art and authenticity will also appreciate it.
Makgabeng Lodge is run by a delightful couple, Lorraine and Fortune, who were both in the hospitality business in Joburg, working for a major international hotel chain, before deciding to go back to Fortune's hometown to achieve their dream of opening their own lodge while providing job opportunities for the area.
We were delighted with the enthusiasm and generosity of Lorraine and Fortune and their staff. They catered to all of our needs and went out of their way to make sure we were happy!Such a welcome and genuine inerest in the wellbeing of guests is indeed rare.
The accommodation was really comfortable, brand new, the beds and sheets were top quality and the pleasant decoration a unique blend of Africa and Europe.
We stayed in the self catering suite which has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a full kitchen, as well as a terrace where one can enjoy meals after braaing. While we did not have dinner at the lodge, we enjoyed a full breakfast on our last day, and it was all very good.
Makgabeng Lodge is ideally located on the way to the Tuli block in Botswana or as part of a Limpopo tour viewing rock art, visiting the Blouberg reserve which has one of the largest colonies of Cape vultures in the country, hiking ,visiting artists in the Venda country or just soaking in the atmosphere of a unique area where you feel that you have an authentic experience.
Fortune took us to visit villages far away in the mountains, we climbed the Makgabeng to view the rock art with Jonas who is the local authority on the plateau and a well known expert in rock paintings.
Evenings were peaceful, watching the Makgabeng plateau slowly recede into darkness after a beutiful pink sunset, listening to cowbells and the sound of villagers'voices as they got ready for dinner in their nearby little villages.
There are few places where you will really feel like friends when you leave, and the Makgabeng Lodge is definitely one of them...Go and meet Lorraine and Fortune and experience a visit with genuine people.

Makgabeng Farm Lodge lies south of the Blouberg and west of the Soutpansberg in Senwabarwana. Rising 200 metres above the bushveld surrounds, the Makgabeng Plateau is a dramatic stretch of 250km² of towering ochre cliffs and dramatic red sandstone rock formations. With its panoramic views of the magnificent Makgabeng, the lodge is perfectly positioned to give you a mountain getaway with a difference. Just a short drive takes you into the Makgabeng, renowned for its ancient rock art paintings that date back to the earliest African ancestors, a fascinating history that is best experienced for yourself. This owner-run lodge offers personalised service and tours into the Makgabeng to experience the 800 San, Khoikhoi and Northern Sotho rock art paintings, with guide Jonas Tlouamma. Nothing is too much trouble for owners, Fortune and Lorraine and they will ensure that you can enjoy the Makgabeng to its fullest!

I was pleasantly surprised with the hospitality with which I was received. The rooms were spacious and was fitted with everything one needs. The TV channels were a bit limited, but the wifi made up for that. Breakfasts were made with love and care, and I would also strongly recommend having supper at Makgabeng. A special thanks to Hellen who really took care of me like a mom.

A truly wonderful time. The entire staff were so helpful and friendly, I'll really enjoyed their wonderful service and hospitality. They went out of their way to insure I enjoyed my stay. The lodge owner Fortune picked me up at the airport and then delivered me back at the end of my stay. He was so helpful in setting up my visit and I knew I was in good hands when I booked my stay. Fortune also made all of the arrangements for me to spend a day view the rock art of the area with a truly amazing local guide Jonas. His knowledge and depth of understanding were incredible. The rock art is an absolute must see! The Makgabeng lodge is a real gem located in a remote and beautiful setting. One not to be missed!

Our family of three was warmly received and made to feel very comfortable. The service was outstanding and the quality of accommodation and food excellent. Fortune, Agnes, Rosina and colleagues went out of their way to make our stay memorable and enjoyable. We’ll definitely be back to continue exploring Makgabeng and Blouberg!

At first when i heard about Makgabeng Farm Lodge and its location i thought it was just a small and not such good place for one to take your loved one to spend some quality time there. Anyway i took a risk, and with that risk of booking not sure if it was a good place. i want to thank all the people at Makgabeng Farm Lodge for having such a wonderful cultural place, for their wonderful hopitality. i had a great time, the rooms are superb i must say. i was staying at Charlet rooms and i liked the design inside and out, the shower and bath. it was the first and that'll definately not be the last time for me...My home is not far from there but i won't mind spending money just to get the fresh environment, peace of mind. Keep up the good work guys, putting Senwabarwana (Bochum) and Blouberg Municipality on the Map.

I visited Makgabeng (Farm) Lodge from 28 - 30 April 2015. We were there to deliver bicycles to learners to enable them better access to education. We were hosted by Fortune in Makgabeng Lodge. I was in room 9. Room was well equipped with Satellite TV, and AirCon and all the other little luxuries you can expect from a lodge. Helen was our hostess and Fortune went out of his way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The Lodge is a small gem in the middle of an environment with a wealth of rock art. The one thing that stood out for our party is the absolute hospitality of the people. They will see me again.
