Value
Known as "the place of water," Nkomazi Game Reserve is a destination of outstanding scenic beauty. It is an ecological Aladdin’s Cave of natural science, from its towering ancient mountains to its broad river valleys and impressive grasslands. Victorian military "Africa Campaign" styled tents blend into the landscape. Furniture creates a traditional "Out of Africa" feel with all the added comforts and luxuries of 5-star accommodation.

The staff and accommodations at Nkomazi Game Reserve were first class. From the moment you arrive at the main gate, you are welcomed by your Guide and take the 30min drive to the Lodge. You immediately begin seeing the wildlife along the way. Our Guide, Thomas, was amazing and made the trip that much more special with his knowledge, sharp eyes spotting everything and providing all types of information about each of the animals, plants and history of the area. During our time, we got see, up and close, elephants, lions, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, kudus, springboks, giraffes, wart hogs, and more. Unfortunately, the hippos remained elusive. Additionally, poachers had killed some rhinos in the recent past, so the remaining ones were moved to another location for their safety, so we didn't get to see them either. At least we knew they were safe.

This was truly the trip of a lifetime! We spent 3-4hrs each morning and afternoon on bush drives. While that may sound like a lot, the time goes by so fast you don't notice it. Seeing all the wildlife up close (sometimes within 5ft of the jeep) as well as the remarkable landscape was unforgettable. Dalane & I could spend all day just riding around admiring the views and animals you come across. Our Guide Thomas was incredible, and I would highly recommend asking for him when you visit Nkomazi.

The tent accommodations were first class. Ours was on a hillside above the river, so we were lulled to sleep by the sound of rushing water. We occasionally, had some monkeys visit the deck of our tent (they were no problem).

I can't say enough great things about Nkomazi, the location, staff, accommodations, bush drives, food etc.

Highly recommend you visit! We enjoyed it so much we plan to return in the future.

We spent a weekend away for our wedding anniversary, with accommodation with views of the river. It was magnificent !!! The location is fantastic but what really takes it up a notch is the awesome staff and their attention to detail to make your stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. We will definitely go again.

We stayed from 27th to 30th December 2019. Game drives. accommodations, food, service, scenery, presentation, all excellent. The personal attention we received was very good and the game drives with our Ranger, Christian Smit was excellent.

Our only objection is that the stay was very expensive due to the fact that being a family of 5 persons, we had to pay for 3 tents. Anyway, our kids stayed all 3 of them in the same tenth, so we paid for an empty tent. This made out stay 50% more expensive! f you are 2, 4, 6, 8, etc., this is no problem.

Wow I still can’t believe how amazing this place is. The rooms were very tidy, the views, the staff. Mr B very down to earth service personal and pays well attention to the order. In general we were blown away with the awesomeness of Nkomazi. Definitely we will be back in the near future.

Ps: they kept to the corona regulations by measuring the temperature and hand sanitizing.

This is an amazing place and you really experience a close encounter with nature in a beautiful and quiet setting. The tents offer simple yet luxurious and very cosy accomodation, food and wine are great, and the staff is extremely service-minded and will do everything to make your stay comfortable. Not least did we have a ranger (Jacques) who must be a rolemodel for his trade. Extremely knowledgeable, considerate, and flexible ensuring truly memorable game drives both mornings and after-noons. A place well worth visiting and re-visiting.

“Hospitality is almost impossible to teach. It’s all about hiring the right people”
Well in that case 5 stars for the management of Nkomazi game reserve because they definitely put the right people in the right place.

To start with the man with the sincere 24 hours-smile on his face; Emanuel from the front desk. A warm welcome. This guy understands the importance of putting the customer first and making things easy and uncomplicated. He personally escorted us to our amazing Honeymoon-suite. (Number 5) with a breathtaking view to the river, plunge pool and outside shower and bath and a luxury but comfortable interior.

After lunch (set menu, tasty and complete) with enjoyable wine served by the very attentive (and once again smiling!) team of Thando, Godfrey, Precious and Promise. This team made sure that during our 5 nights stay nothing was missing. Their level of service is high and they are very approachable to the guest and always being alert and attentive. We also had the opportunity of meeting the friendly and charming FB manager Mike; who does a great job in the expertise of food and drinks.

In total we did 10 game drives and we had the privilege and the luck of stepping in to the world of our extremely passionate and talented guide/ ranger Vicky. Wow; we have been touched by the love, care and passion Vicky has for both the animals and nature. All the knowledge she shared with us during the drives was a wonderful extra to these safaris. We have seen a lot of animals due to the fact she knows the area by heart and never seems to give up. Vicky really showed to be a very competent guide with great people skills. We enjoyed every moment during the many rides with her and one of the highlights was to spot a cheetah on the hunt during sunset. Truly an unique moment.

Being back in the lodge where Emanuel or his colleague stands ready to welcome us back “home” with refreshments and comfort items. Taking an outside shower in our lodge with view on the river and then heading back to the main building for dinner. Along this short walk we’ve pleasantly encountered some animals grazing relaxed around the lodge.

A wonderful three course dinner being served and then falling asleep with the sound of the river in a comfortable bed in our luxurious tent. Being woken up by Vicky who welcomed us with fresh coffee and her never ending enthusiasm for another day of adventure.

Thank you all for an amazing week. Service to the top in a relaxed way and most of all in a place where every member of the staff seems to like his/her work. We travel a lot all over the world and have a lot of experience in hospitality in both giving and receiving. In this place everything looks and feels in harmony. Definitely a lodge to recommend and a place to come back to. We have no recommendations for improving the service in your place. A job well done. Please pass on all our compliments to your wonderful staff.

We stayed here for two nights in the Delux tent and would definitely recommend it! Firstly, the service from the staff is first class, everyone is super attentive and friendly and everyone from the game rangers to management tries to personalize your experience. I have never had such top service! Then there are the suites, you have your own plunge pool in a secluded bush setting with a tent that is pure luxury. Indoor and outdoor showers, together with a lounge area and bath! You can watch elephants bathing in the river from your bed! The game drivers are knowledgeable and the reserve itself is so beautiful with many different terrains. The food and wine were also outstanding! The comfort of the guests is first priority with small touches and details like gorgeous decor and luxurious bedding. The weather is very unpredictable so bring a mix of clothes (it gets FREEZING in the early mornings), and definitely ask for a hot water bottle on the game drive!

During breakfast I was asked what bread I would like with my eggs, to which I replied: rye. We only have Sasko, the waiter replied. If you don't know what Sasko is, I don't think you'll necessarily enjoy this resort. Don't get me wrong; the people are lovely and the property is superb. But the service and in particular the food really doesn't hold up to quality I've gotten used to at game reserves in this part of the world. It was poor for a supposedly 5 star property, which is a shame. And they certainly tried, and promised when I made the booking whether I had any dietary requirements. The very fact that they asked me that made me think they would certainly honor it, but they didn't. My spouse has a low-carb, low-sugar diet, so I asked whether it could be accommodated. They said: of course. To our surprise our first meal consisted out of caramelised sweet potato and breaded chicken in a wrap. The braai that night was perfect, which included my first taste of crocodile, but the sides really didn't live up to my South African expectations. As a South African I know that something like a malva pudding is very hard to mess up. The desert wasn't good, and the custard very obviously came out of a box. I'm not saying you need to cater to foreigners, but when I drive out from the city for a weekend away, it would be nice to have a good treat like a good malva, or even a potato bake which at the very least includes cooked potatoes. I can't recall when last I had potato bake which is why I was so looking forward to it.

That's the food, now the game drive. Our guide was kind and tried his best to find us a lion but he wasn't very communicative. As South Africans we're spoiled for choice since we're so close to nature. But when you're owned by Newmark, sell yourself as a five star property, I think the food and service needs a drastic upgrade. The location and facilities are wonderful, but at this price point I can have a much better stay at a property closer to the Kruger.

Excellent service from arrival. The free transfer from the gate to the lodge is at 1pm, and I would recommend this unless you are in a 4x4. Staff cannot do enough for you. Allergies catered for, just let them know in advance. Fully inclusive, you won’t go hungry ! The glamping tents are amazing. We had number 6 right by the rivers edge. A very steep incline to get from it, but if you can cope with this it’s well worth it.

Orange sunsets, majestic cats and rapid river runs make this a slice of African paradise. Added to this you'll find roaring evening fires, crisp wine and tantalising cuisine. A truly remarkable place.

They don’t have any Rhinos in the reserve, we did not see any leopards either, other than that we saw lions, buffalos and elephants. The buffalos were new additions and we were fortunate to see them arrived at the park.
