Accommodation consists of a fourteen bed tented camp, built around a waterhole. The seven spacious tents extend the u-shaped design, allowing for both privacy and fantastic views. Styled similarly to the main complex in the colors of the bush, each tent is designed with the same attention to detail and has a feeling of natural luxury. Each tent has both an indoor and outdoor shower, a gorgeous modern interpretation of an old zinc bath, a separate toilet, two stone basins and a private sitting area.
Quite the title for a review, eh? But the Onguma Tented Camp was all that and more. It is situated just a few kilometres from the gate of Etosha Park, no long trip to do a game drive. And frankly, game drives are almost redundant because the animals appear at the watering hole just opposite your gorgeous tent. One evening we saw 4 male elephants swim, play, and spray in the water for an hour. Earlier 7 giraffes arrived to drink and relax. All day entertainment! The 7 tents are beautifully appointed, full bathroom, 2 sinks, even a tub! Outdoor shower, lots of space to sit and fuss with luggage. They light tea lights in the room while you are at dinner and leave charming good night messages on the night tables. So many kind and thoughtful touches. The dining room is very elegant, the service professional and friendly, the food ample and sophisticated. Best breakfast in Namibia! We were thrilled to have 2 nights there (as was our guide who says it is also his favourite place), we could have just stayed... There is something wonderful about being in a place with so few guests. This is everything one dreams of when planning an African safari.…

Very disappointing... We were so looking forward to staying at Onguma, but unfortunately it didn't deliver. On the upside the accommodation and location were wonderful the food fabulous and the wait staff in the dining room were outstanding. On the downside the guiding was some of the worst we've experienced in the 28+ years we've been travelling to Africa. It just felt like they didn't try. The first game drive on the reserve, our guide pretty much told us there was `nothing to see'. The next days reserve game drive there was a pride of lions with cubs at the waterhole where the hide is located. There were guests inside the hide who were supposed to vacate by 6pm. Their guide refused to leave until it was dark. There were at least 5 vehicles full of guests who were unable to see this-very, very disappointing to say the least. This was brought up to camp management at the time. There wasn't even an apology, he just said it `was a mess'.…

Response from Marelize Conradie, General Manager at Onguma Tented Camp
Responded 27 Oct 2023
Dear Charlotte The matter has been brought to our attention the day it happened by the Camp Manager and Head guide if I can please elaborate on the policies we have in place with animal sightings at The Hide waterhole. We typically have time slots when the hide can be booked at an additional charge if not booked on an Inclusive rate, and had guest requesting it later during the afternoon. We also want the guest booking the hide to have an exclusive experience and not have vehicles drive around the waterhole and possibly disturbing the sighting and hence the reason that your guide could not take you to see the animals at the Hide. Onguma has a healthy population of Lions and it is a pity there weren't more sightings that day which is not the norm. I do apologize for the way the situation was handled when you spoke to the Camp Manager as well as the guide not communicating effectively on what we offer. I believe this was an isolated event on 5 Oct and as you can read from previous reviews, game viewing on Onguma is the highlight of guest's stay. Thank you for taking the time to send us Feedback which we appreciate and I will make sure the rest of the Team get's the review on location, food and service

We stayed 3 nights and could have stayed 3 more! Service was excellent throughout especially Jacky who looked after us at breakfast / dinner and made sure we got back safely to our tent after dinner. The tent had everything you will require and has been thought out to ensure your stay will be very comfortable. Excellent tea and coffee facilities, fully stocked mini bar, big fluffy towels and bed slippers. Shame the bathrobes are too small. Any issues were sorted quickly if they arise. Good lighting if needed, we preferred to keep privacy screens open so we could see the comings and goings at the water hole. Excellent mosquito net if needed. Aircon if required which was effective but not needed in September as cooled off at nights. You do need to be escorted before sunrise and after sunset, as lions/elephants active in the area. You can hear the lions calling at night. We thought the food was excellent, you get 2 starters, then a choice of 2 mains and then dessert. We enjoyed the chicken and sole fish as mains, the fish was some of the best we had in Namibia. Good wine list. Breakfast was also excellent. We did their sundowner game drive in Onguma reserve and really enjoyed the experience, David, our guide was excellent and fun. It’s about a 15 minute drive through Onguma from main road, which is right by the entry gate (be warned it can be slow to get into Etosha NP). We saw a mother cheetah and cub on the road within Onguma, special experience all to ourselves. …

A magical experience! The tented camp exceeded our expectations by far! Animals kept coming around our tent and waterhole. The level of attention to detail was extraordinary and the little touches were lovely. Staff were so nice and accommodating. So thoughtful of them to welcome us with a bottle of champagne and set up a private table for dinning the first night, to make it special for our honeymoon. Best stay in Namibia- Thank you all for an incredible experience that we'll remember for the years to come.

The lodge was clean and well-maintained. The immaculate grounds were especially soothing. After our previous days in Namibia- which were glorious- the “greenness” of the lodge was soothing. Their common room was inviting- as well as all the common areas. The lodge room was beautiful and so well-maintained. I loved their geyser-heated shower! Another plus was the watering hole- all tents had a patio with a view. You could sit and watch animals at your leisure. The food was simple yet hearty. Sundowners we’re GORGEOUS! Also our guided time in Etosha was phenomenal- so worth it! All in all, a lovely stay at a boutique-worthy lodge!

I spent two nights here in May 2023 and really enjoyed my stay. The property has its own waterhole which was visited daily by several giraffes as well as warthog and impala. The service was excellent and the tent was basic but adequate. Game drives in the reserve are offered in the evenings and game viewing was generally good (saw lions on two consecutive nights). The Onguma Reserve is literally 100 meters or less from the Von Lindquist gate of Etosha NP and game drives into the park from Tented Camp were a breeze.

Simply exceptional! A stunning location, dare i say outshining Etosha on this wet season trip. Beautifully appointed room with a fantastic waterhole view. A lovely small swimming pool and the best meals by far on our whole trip. The two game drives we took were also exceptional. We specifically asked for a morning drive within the Onguma reserve and we were so glad to have done this as it is a beautiful area and on this occasion offered better wildlife sightings than Etosha had offered up. I really don’t understand why all the game drives tend to head into Etosha in the mornings and don’t stay on this paradise reserve. Our guide was excellent, very enthusiastic and exuberant. I could definitely imagine us returning to Onguma and doing a split lodge stay within their reserve.

Tented camps are a bit of a mis-Noma as most have rigid frame structures with a tented overlay. Onguma Reserve abuts Etosha and itself has some 34,000 sq Km of land with plenty of wild life. Safaris out also include trips in to Etosha to see Rhino and Cheetahs. A central building offers extremely good quality beakfast, lunches and dinners along with a hide to watch the bird life.
