#9 of 36 Speciality lodging in Etosha National Park
The well-established Ongava Lodge is situated along the southern boundary of Etosha National Park in the privately owned Ongava Game Reserve. Situated as it is close to the top of a hill in the foothills of the Ondundozonanandana Mountain Range, the vantage point is beautiful and overlooks a well-frequented waterhole and the plains beyond. Ongava Lodge offers luxury accommodation in 14 rock and thatch en-suite chalets. There are impressive views over the camp's waterhole from the main lounge and dining areas and there is also an inviting pool to cool off in the heat of the day. Meals are either served in the main dining area under thatch or on the dining deck under the stars.Activities include game drives into Etosha, visting hides, and nature drives and walks on the reserve. Ongava has resident white and black rhino, giving guests staying at Ongava the opportunity to see both species.

Ongava Lodge is definitely one of the gems of game reserve lodges. Totally flawless, wonderfully friendly and helpful team, unbelievably well curated atmosphere which all combined deliver an impeccable experience. The lodge is located just next to Etosha park and has its own game reserve of 66 000sq. hectares with a huge amount of black and white rhinos. The premises are amazing the lobby and restaurant are on top of a hill with a wonderful view, but what’s completely breathtaking is the water hole with hide view just under the restaurant. You can have drinks, dinner , enjoy the sunset and watch rhinos, springboks, zebras, etc. drinking water 100 meters from you. The houses are huge, with a lovely combination of subtle modern touches and safari elements. Huge bed, amazing terraces, open shower, huge indoor shower, free laundry services, everything was perfect. The restaurant offered a short, but really tasty menu with a fusion of European and South-west African cuisine. In terms of activities, we had 2 full game days and I can’t stress it enough, but Bono (one of the lodge’s Field Guides) is a legend! The best guide I’ve ever had! Friendly, knowing when to start or to stop a conversation and extremely knowledgeable about animals, plants, area, nature.... There was no question he couldn’t answer, he pointed our attention to different elements and facts when needed and we learned so much from him. We felt absolutely safe with him when we did rhino-approaching or were just 10 meters from the lions. Bono is simply the best Field Guide we’ve ever had. The host/lodge manager Adriano was a top-notch guy too! Huge thanks also to Jona, a super cool waiter, who managed to arrange for us a binocular for the game drives and was always ready to help! The Ongava Game Reserve is actually much much better than Etosha. Yes, there are less animals (though rhinos are more than in Etosha), but when you have the game drives you are alone and really feel the safari privacy. No other cars going through the dusty roads, real off-road 4x4 driving and it just feels so much more real to find the animals. Seeing rhinos is practically guaranteed: while on a game drive or in the lodge... something that is not guaranteed at Etosha park. After three days at Ongava, we did not want to leave. Most definitely we will return! I can’t recommend this place enough!

A private game reserve which I found much nicer than Etosha National Park (but they do combine game drives in both parks/reserves). Almost guaranteed to see lions & rhino. Nice rooms, good food and good staff. Had an excellent guide (Stanly) for the game drives. The water whole at the lodge attracts many animals and there is a silent look-out next to it - amazing pictures. Go there 6:30 AM in the morning to see the birds.

Overall wonderful experience from lodging to wildlife sightseeing, and eating. The Ongava lodge is located on top of a hill in Ongava Game Reserve. The view, kilometers out is stunning. As if this was not enough, a waterhole was built in front of the main terrace (where all meals are served), enabling to see wildlife every time you eat. Moreover, for those wanting to go even closer, you can go down and hide in a viewpoint, just a few feet away from the waterhole. Watching rhinos, girafes, and others drink at just an arm-length is one of the most humbling experience in my life. In terms of accommodation, rooms are well designed and decorated and include a private terrace, in&outdoor shower and view on the waterhole. Food is excellent. Service is perfect and people are so kind at all times. Our guide, Pascal, was super knowledgeable and had a very proactive attitude during tours. We also liked the fact that he is a real animal lover and would not disturb them. Finally, his confidence and experience made us feel safe, even when surrounded by 6 rhinos (all within a 10 meters perimeter).

This hotel... omg this hotel... When you are welcome with a fresh towel, a nice juice in the parking lot and smiles all over te place, you can tell that it is going to be a great stop. - Bengalows: one of the best we've had in a 3 week trip. simply gorgeous and well made. - Lobby & service: between the view, the choice of furnitures, the atmosphere, the kindness of the staff, nothing to say except that it was simply one of the best Lodge we stayed in. - the Waterhole: Ongava Lodge is facing a waterhole next to which a small bunker/hideout was built as to observe animals from up close. This is one of the highest highlights of this lodge. Being 5 meters away from a few rhinos is a once in a lifetime experience. Special Thanks to Cecilia and Bono for making this short stop so memorable. Our only regret is to have stayed only 1 night. Needless to say that we have already recommended your lodge to dozens of people :) Wishing you all the best until next time! The Trancart Family

Unfortunately still recovering from the lockdown with regards to wildlife but the nearby Etosha makes up for it. It is a good camp camp in a unique location, as it is the friendliness of the staff from beginning to end. We had an issue with the room that we quickly resolved and even compensated further by a private dinner in a gazebo overlooking the waterhole. On the very last morning we tried to see the rhino on foot, and managed to find two of them and stand some 25 meters away from them. What a way to end up our wildlife experience in Namibia.
