This Fort is unlike any other, the only one of its kind in Namibia, built in exactly the right spot to give our guests probably one of the best sunset views in the whole of Namibia. Overlooking the beautiful scarceness of the Etosha Pans, decorated only with its wild animals and hundreds of Camel Thorn trees that dot the landscape. Accommodation consists of twelve Bush Suites with fire places for the winter months and air coolers for the summer months. Each suite has an indoor and outdoor shower. The one and only Fort Suite is situated inside the Main Tower of the main complex. It has a large beautifully designed bedroom that leads into a lounge area and out onto a private viewing deck.

Onguma has all the ingredients to be the best lodge in Namibia: the rooms are vast and well appointed; the location is ideal looking at Etosha and 10 mins from the front door to the main gate; there’s a gin trolley and decanters of spirits to drink at your leisure in the rooms; the menus are more innovative than most other lodges.

However I rate it 4 rather than 5 because execution was sloppy. It sounds harsh but it felt a bit like the hotel is resting on its mighty reputation, which for the high price tarnishes an otherwise great stay.

A couple of examples:

We stayed during Covid so the hotel wasn’t full (I’d say 50% occupied), but there were still a fair number of staff (not a skeleton crew). But the restaurant service was slow and haphazard. Our check in experience was terrible. We spent 5 minutes unloading our bags from our car in view of the staff only to be told that we should drive our bags in our car to our room. We seemed to be an inconvenience filling in our check in forms.

The game drives have been outsourced to a 3rd party supplier (probably a Covid thing). The driver we had was poor vs all others across Namibia, wasn’t equipped with blankets for a morning drive, didn’t have tea & coffee, didn’t know where to look for animals. We did better ourselves as complete safari novices in our own car.

The food at its best is fantastic, but is inconsistent. The best example was the ploughman’s for lunch. Not a hard dish, but the interpretation with ritz crackers and no decent bread was bizarre.

Maybe we were unlucky and to be fair all hotels have bad days. Small improvements would have dramatically changed my view. I’d recommend Onguma but don’t let your expectations run wild.

If you have the opportunity, try and arrange a 2 days stay at Onguma Fort. From the minute you arrive until the moment you leave, you are indulged in a luxurious environment. Helpful staff, led by the excellent Marissa and aided by the wonderful Claudia, attend to your hearts desires and nothing is too much trouble. The standard of accommodation is superb and the free bar within your room itself aids first class sleep, in so, so comfy beds. The bathroom are beautiful and this, combined with nice touches from the cleaning staff lead to a overwhelming feeling of contentment. The view and table placements at dinner, combined with top quality food and service, made for our best stay in Namibia. It's not cheap, but if you really want to treat yourself, stay at the Onguma Fort for a memory that won't be forgotten.

We have been to Onguma TF several times. Currently the price is around 1000€ per night for 2 persons. It is supposed to be an upper class five star location, but that doesn't quite fit.
In the few years since it opened, you can see the increasing wear and tear quite well. Maintenance is always a problem with expensive lodges in Nambia, especially when a global company with a controller is behind it. At such a price, everything has to fit and that is unfortunately not quite true. The furniture already shows visible signs of wear and tear, the shower hoses are calcified, the toilet water seal is broken, and so on. Many small things that should not happen to a 5-star hotel in this price range.
The owner should make an effort to maintain the level, as there are some strong competitors in the similar price segment out there.

Otherwise, a great facility in Arabian style, everything fitting and coherent.
Great staff, some from previous years but also many new young people.
No real resort between the villas, just Namibian nature.
In summary, still 5 stars, but without improvements soon only 4.
Recommendable if you want to afford it, we will come again.
Hey management team, you should keep a database or list of repeaters. No one knew we had been there before.

This lodge consists of a central building and a small number of individual private lodges with wonderful views. All architecture is inspired by a northern African kashba, modern, tasteful and spacious. It is outside Etosha National Park, the must visit here, reached after a 30-45 min drive. The welcome was however rather disappointing, as our requested suite wasn’t available, which we had to find out ourselves based on the alternative lodge offering. Very strange, as we had written confirmation and still needed to push. We were compensated for the lacking nights prior to our stay in the suite at our final night. Not a nice start of our stay with high expectations. The staff really made an effort, while the manager seemed more business than customer/hospitality oriented. Apart from the start, our stay was very enjoyable. The lodges are beautiful, luxurious and very private. The lodges have an open air shower and a fireplace (which the super spacious suite hasn’t). The food is very good: lovely made to order breakfast and very nice three course meals. Great animal views from the terrace during the meals due to the nearby, illuminated water hole. Also the guides were professional and nice, especially Liberty. Don’t miss the photo hide if you want to watch animals from nearby and/or like to take pictures. Also not to miss is the small roof terras on the 2nd floor of the central building, for a romantic private sundowner. Between the lodges and the central building transport is offered, as walking in this wild animal environment is not advisable. I would certainly recommend a stay at Onguma The Lodge, but make sure you get the lodging you got confirmed by your agency. It’s recommended to check your bill upon departure (ours contained too much, which was refunded after a complaint). The airport strip is only a 15-20 min drive away.

We stayed for 2 night the The Fort, which is Moroccan in design (not sure why). The rooms are huge and you have a large wrap round terrace with sunloungers and an outside shower overlooking the waterhole which has lots of visitors at all times of day.

The food in the restaurant is excellent thought the lighting could be improved, had to keep turning my torch on to see what we were eating.

We did the sundowner game drive the day we arrived and we greeted by a magnificent electrical storm - we were glad the safari vehicle had a supply of waterproof ponchos.

The next day I did a morning and afternoon game drive in to Etosha with David, who was excellent and I saw loads of game. Might have been a better idea to have taken a packed lunch and stayed out all day?!

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place as it is excellent and located just outside the Nanumtoni Gate.

We stayed 3 nights at The Fort. It was our first time in Etosha and we absolutely loved it. The hotel is located in a private reserve called Onguma.

The rooms are spacious, very well decorated with an incredible bathroom. Plus, each bungalow has a big terrace with a breathtaking view on the savanna and on a small water hole from which dozens of animals drink water each day. In addition, rooms include complimentary amenities and laundry.

We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel and each meal was extraordinary. The menu for each meal changes every single day and offers a wide variety of dishes both local and western. The lunch wasn't included in our package but the price of it was fairly cheap compared to European restaurants. This was very appreciated.

The staff were always smiling and were very helpful. Each night we had a special treat in our rooms waiting for us after dinner.

We did 3 games, two in Etosha and one in Oguma. The guides were always doing their best to find animals and gave us a lot of explanations on the animals we saw. Both of the reserves are worth exploring and the landscape on both is different.

This hotel is definitely the place to be if you come to Etosha and is worth its price. We absolutely loved our stay and left with wonderful memories.

This is one of the best hotels we have stayed at and completely true to its name meaning - 'The place you don't want to leave'. We stayed in the Sultan Suite for 3 nights which was like being on honeymoon in both size and feel with a direct view of the main waterhole from its own private balcony.

The hotel staff are incredibly friendly and professional and the attention to detail was present in every aspect. When we returned to our room after dinner the candles had all been lit and when we departed we were given a small bottle of Namib sand to always remind us of the desert. The wine list is extensive and with premium SA wines included. The meals are delicious and varied with 4 course dinners.

We didn't do any game drives as preferred to drive ourselves and the game viewing in Etosha is world class. Lots of sightings of large groups of elephant, giraffe, zebra and all the other antelope, not to mention beautiful birds and the highlight definitely seeing both black and white rhino - real privilege and so heartwarming to see their numbers increasing with all the amazing work being done in Etosha to protect these magical creatures. We will definitely be back so thank you to all the staff.

We stayed at the Fort from January 24 to 27th, 2020 @ The Bush Suite. Everything was just absolutely amazing - the accommodation, the staff, the food, the safari drivers and the whole experience in total! We can highly recommend this outstanding place to all travelers. Onguma The Fort provides ample opportunities for wildlife viewing in a setting of which the comfort and luxury is equal to none.

Views from both the main Fort area and private Chalets provide an uninterrupted view of the watering hole, the favored gathering hole for game. A telescope on deck encourages the visitor to find unspoiled views, beyond the line of sight.

Exceptionally friendly staff eagerly tend to every whim and enhances the experience by interacting in a variety of languages.

The variety of enticing activities only add to the already unmatched encounter.

An absolute must do, must-see, and must return!

Wow what a place, we flew into the lodge and we’re lucky enough to be met by a Cheetah and her cub at the Airstrip. We staying in the Sultan Suite which over looks the watering hole and provided a constant view of zebras, jackels and wilderbeast. You are so close to nature and the views are spectacular.

The room was amazing, with free drinks and snacks to provide energy for the days adventures.

We took three trips with Cola, our super park ranger- very knowledgeable and great company.

The service and food at the lodge was amazing. Rachel our waitress was warm and friendly and provided excellent service through out our stay.

This place is a must!
