When we checked into The 1720 House, the caretaker told us we had a shared bathroom but never told us where the bathroom was. On the second day she yelled at us for using the wrong bathroom even though she never told us which bathroom to use. The sign on the bathroom we were supposed to use did not even say bathroom. Her rudeness to appropriately manage this issue was totally unacceptable.

Abby of 1720 House has questionable ethics. I made a reservation by phone for my 82 year old mother. Abby wouldn’t commit to telling me which room she would be booked into. I asked her if she could stay in a particular first floor room and the reply was, “No, no, no!” I said she’s 82 and has trouble with stairs. She said she was going to be on the second floor and that there were “just a few stairs.” Unfortunately, I had already paid, assuming she would care about an 82 year old person. Boy, was I wrong. She stated several times that the reservation was not changeable or able to be canceled. I made the mistake of paying before I found out which room she would be booked into. Never having been there, I took her word for it, thinking a few was a few. There are no photos on the site of the staircase. As it turns out, it is a full flight of stairs with treacherously uneven floors covered in old carpet. Inside the front door is an old, bunches up cotton rug on top of an antique wool rug. When we pulled up to the house, Abby was outside speaking with someone. She told us there were keys on the hall table. She didn’t show my mother to her room, we had to find it on our own. In addition, one afternoon, I went to make a cup of tea for my mother and found the cups and creamers to be dirty inside. No matter, there was no milk or cream to be had. I cleaned out a cup and made some tea. The last day of my mother’s reservation, she went downstairs to the dining room on time, (there is a strict one hour breakfast service policy,) to find no coffee, no bread for toast. Some yogurt and blueberries were available. We understood there was an abbreviated breakfast due to Covid but coffee and toast were served every morning. It seems my mother was the last to leave and so no coffee had been made - because, why exactly? What a sour taste in our mouths, like the milk that curdled in my mothers coffee on Wednesday. (Apparently, that was the farmer’s fault.)

Stayed at the historic 1720 House Bed & Breakfast again while enjoying my first travel trip since the outbreak of COVID19. It was wonderful! The inn is comfortable and relaxing, while making certain that all is safe and clean for visitors. The gardens were just beginning to bloom and the weather fantastic! The host was most helpful for getting about the Island and the inn's location is the perfect starting point.

The house is gorgeous. It's very peaceful and I slept like a baby all nights I spent there. Abby is a very interesting woman and has great life stories and the best recommendations and tips on what to do and see on the Island. I'll miss this place so much, hope to come back soon!

This sweet and quaintly furnished inn reminds me of what I always expected a bed and breakfast to feel like. I love my room with its four poster bed and gauzy white curtains hanging down on the sides. It's winter on Martha's Vineyard, with a polar vortex about to descend, and yet the lovely views beyond my windows beckon me outside for walks on the nearby beach and the short jaunt into town. Upon my return, I know I'll find comfort in the lovely downstairs parlor and dining room with a quick cup of hot chocolate waiting for me. The owner, Abby, is a great conversationalist, and her coffee table book about the mansions of Paris elicits stories from both of us. After that it's back up to my room to sample the eclectic reading with books stacked on every table.

I visited MV for the first time recently and found the 1720 House to be a great home base. The historic inn is lovely and quaint (adding to the experience) I was able to walk into town to grab lunch at one of the many little restaurants on Main Street (Nat's Nook a fave) and explore the unique shops of the town. There's a little beach and park just across from the Inn. A hub for all of the buses was a short walk away (near the ferry which was also very convenient for a carless traveller) so I was able to explore the entire island, although at the end of the day I was more than happy to settle into the outdoor garden or antiques furnished living room and truly feel like I was in a really magical place. Can see why the Vineyard is so special to people. Abby was a wonderful, knowledgable host and a very interesting lady in her own right! Will definitely be back.

This traditional home is welcoming and inviting. Conveniently located steps from town This home is also close to the ferry which made the trip for my family and I so very enjoyable as we did not need a car ....we walked everywhere. The innkeeper is welcoming, inviting and attentive. 1720 House is a winner and great for family reunions, college get together’s and anyone who wants a small intimate environment in the traditional style of Martha’s Vineyard. We will be back!

beautiful, historic house located very conveniently near downtown Vineyards Haven! The staff was exquisitely gracious and accommodating, readily available and eager to help. The room was classic and welcoming, full of natural light and beautiful view. Not to mention the glorious beech tree that provides sufficient shade, perfect for my yoga practice and relaxing! Abby was a gracious host indeed!
