Dwesa River Mouth Lodge in Transkei South Africa is the greatest disappointment. I would not recommend that anyone stay there The torture associated with this establishment began when we drove for 2 hours to the incorrect tag location on google maps. After contacting the booking office we were informed that the location tag was incorrect. Why any accommodation establishment would not correct such a grievous error is beyond me, but that was just the beginning. The incorrect google location tag was one thing, but the fact that their own website and third-party advertising sites also have the location of the property listed incorrectly is unforgivable and borders on false advertising. Their own website states the location as "near the Haven Hotel'. This is where we originally drove to only to find that the building indicated was, in fact, a lighthouse. This error was reported to Google and one can only hope that they have managed to update their details across various platforms. While the lodge itself is located on a hilltop overlooking the ocean, the houses have been constructed so they face towards the road and not the ocean. So - no sea view from the rooms. On entry, the entire house smelled of sewage and need to be aired out. The dishes and draws were filthy and need to be thoroughly washed before use. All this was a fantastic birthday gift for my husband - yes this all occurred on his birthday. The house is poorly constructed with skew doors, bathrooms that are not ventilated and makeshift two-point plugs that could easily result in the user being electrocuted. The onsite staff were extremely helpful and did what they could to make our stay less tragic, they truly went above and beyond and are a massive asset to the owners. We did, however, end up calling it quits and headed out earlier than planned. At the time of publishing this review, the Dwesa River Mouth Lodge website was down, but their listing remains on the following third-party sites: AA Travel (incorrect location indicated), Afristay (incorrect location indicated), SafariNow (correct location indicated). Sadly the Google location tag was still incorrect at the time of publishing.

Dwesa River Mouth Lodge is run by two great ladies, Dorothy and Lulama. They developed the lodge on a hill overlooking the Nqabara mouth and the surrounding rural area. We visited the Lodge and stayed several nights in order to visit the Dwesa Nature Reserve and other places in the aea. Being on a hill, it is cooler than down at the seaside. If you are prepared to walk, you can walk down to the beach and Nqabara Mouth. You need to prepare your travel - in the rural area of the Eastern Cape the condition of the roads may change overnight due to rain storms. Although ordinary cars can access the roads, vehicles with higher axis may be more recommendable. You also need to plan your trip as you travel slower than on ordinary roads. The chalets are self-catering - plan in advance and bring enough food as the nearest shops are 2 hours away. The accommodation was immaculate - we had all the necessary utensils to prepare our own food. You have what you need - it is always important to remember that you are in a remote area and you cannot expect to have everything you would have should you have lived in a city or near an urban area. There is no veranda but you can sit out in the open and enjoy the night sky with your barbecue. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The community in the surrounding area are very friendly. We felt safer here than we feel in the urban area where we live. We thank Dorothy and Luluma for a great stay!
