Horsted Place is situated on the A26 just south of Uckfield and within 15 minutes drive of Glyndebourne. Originally a private family house, it is now a luxury country house hotel with AA red stars set in landscaped gardens with extensive views towards the South Downs. A grade II listed Victorian gothic mansion, it has original architectural features designed by Pugin and historical links to the British Royal Family. The fine dining, AA 2-rosetted restaurant offers modern English cuisine with freshly prepared seasonal local ingredients whenever possible. Afternoon teas (served on the Terrace in summer or in front of the Drawing Room fires in winter)are extremely popular. There is a croquet lawn and hard tennis court and guests also have use of the spa and leisure facilities at the East Sussex National, 2 minutes away by car.

Horsted Place Hotel and Restaurant is celebrated for its spotless rooms and stylish comfort, with guests often lauding the blend of contemporary and historical touches in the decor. The hotel's serene location is a highlight, offering a picturesque setting ideal for festive occasions. Although the ambiance and amenities like the quality meals and attentive service receive commendations, some visitors express concerns about the value, citing high prices and less-than-impressive dining portions. Additionally, while the service is generally acknowledged as professional and friendly, there are occasional reports of inconsistency.

We booked a two night stay (superior room) with Secret Escapes - the deal included breakfast and dinner on both nights and a complimentary drink from the bar on night one ( I chose champagne). We were visiting a relative who lives locally. Ahead of the stay I spoke and emailed reception to book a table for ourselves and our relative each evening. This was efficiently dealt with and confirmation received via email.

The hotel and grounds are in a beautiful setting just outside Uckfield. The hotel has recently undergone a refresh so expect new carpets, soft furnishings and an updated restaurant - it felt that the refresh had a contemporary feel that worked with the history of the building.

Our room was very comfortable with a huge superking bed with good linens. The room was well appointed with tea and coffee making facilities, biscuits and complimentary still and sparkling water and this was generously replenished both days. Housekeeping was discreet and efficient. The toiletries were plentiful and of a good quality.

I think for us it was the peace and ambience that we enjoyed (we stayed on a Monday and Tuesday - it may be a different feel at the weekend if a wedding was being held). There is ample seating outside to enjoy the weather.

I have to commend the chef and their team for the food. It was really delicious and beautifully presented. If I have one criticism the wine is quite pricey…. Expect £50 for a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc.

All in all a lovely stay and a great deal from Secret Escapes and Horsted Place.

If you’re an opera lover, Glyndebourne will be known to you.

What isn’t as well known is that after such sublime art, the idea of getting on an overlay 10pm train back to London - with all the undesirable activity that implies - is extremely unappealing. You want instead to find a local place of peace, tranquility and not a little grandeur to lay your head for the night.

After all, Glyndebourne is a formal festival at which most attendees still wear Black Tie.

This is why I visited, with clients, Horsted Place Hotel. Somewhere nearby that was only 10-15 mins drive from the opera house.

It has a gentility and soft but defiant luxury to it. Like an old, penniless Countess who despite only possessing old jewellery and shoes, can still rustle up a daring, modern outfit.

The bones are good. An 1850 Manor House, Tudor Revival, with, in most cases, a sensitively updated interior. Rooms are themed according to the famous visitors of the house and surrounding countryside. Worth noting that Queen Elizabeth II and DoE visited in the 1960s when their friends bought the house.

Given the age and social stature of the house, the rooms are very large and comfortable, with views over the countryside surrounding it. As it is down a long driveway, you hear nothing of any major roads around.

Reception is a little strange, as it is just a small desk in the hallway as you enter, but it’s difficult to see where else to put it. Aside from check in and check out we had little need for staff help, but it was adequate and friendly.

It’s not too chintzy here, which can always be a worry for some people about luxury country house hotels in the UK at this price point. It has been recently redecorated and tastefully so. Yes, it’s a little more outdated than, Beaverbrook or Estelle Manor, but then you’re not paying those prices.

No dinner was had, but breakfast was good.

The only issue was no Uber driver would come down the driveway. The hotel helped when the Uber driver cancelled, enabling us to get a replacement vehicle from a local taxi company.

When families are scattered far and wide, you need a place perfect for those meaningful gatherings. Horsted Place is a hidden gem near Lewes in East Sussex that provides a wonderful, quiet place to dine for special occasions. We had a table of 10 and we could all hear each other speak, the staff were friendly and took care with service. The food was light and delicious, not a heavy 3 course lunch at all. I am sugar free and although not on the menu, the kitchen were happy to prepare a small Sussex cheese board as an alternative to desert. The location is spectacular, gathering with drinks outside on warm days is delightful and the food was really nice. We will definitely make this our regular meet up spot as a family.

We spent 2 nights over Easter at Horsted Place via the Secret Escapes dinner b&b deal which we thought was excellent value. We had the Jellicoe suite on the top floor (which was a bit of a trek) but the room was lovely and we enjoyed the food, both dinner and breakfast.
The hotel is a beautiful old Victorian Gothic building in a quiet location the only thing that was very disappointing was the lounge, the decor is drab and unwelcoming and the mismatched furniture has seen better days. There are lovely prints and paintings all over the rest of the hotel and nice chairs going spare in the corridor on the top floor so I don’t understand why no effort has been made to make the lounge nicer! Such a shame as we like to have a drink in the bar before and after dinner and that room really isn’t inviting.
The other comment I’d make in terms of sustainability is the single use pots of jam and sauces at every meal which are so wasteful and must be expensive too. Move with the times on that please!
Despite these points I’d definitely visit again, the staff are lovely and it’s a beautiful building…. just sort out the lounge!

Thak you for your review. Making the lounge a more welcoming room for all is our priority. In February 2024 we re-decorated the room and are now in the process of bringing it to life. We have now added features to the wall. In early May 2024 we are installing a new carpet new and upgrading the furniture. We have also added a number of games for guests to play. In May 2024 we will also install a new carpet in the restaurant and bring in new furniture. I hope you will come back to visit us to see the completed lounge and restaurant.

Visited for a family event in June for a ‘private dining’ experience.

Unfortunately, I believe we would have been better served if we had chosen the Sunday lunch. This would also have been cheaper and may have actually filled us up.

The private dining consisted of 6 small plates of food, 4 of which I was unable to eat due to allergies. It was labelled as a hot buffet, but unfortunately what was served can only be described as canapés. Not enough for a grown adult for a lunchtime meal.

When the birthday cake arrived (which we had bought ourselves), we were not offered a knife to cut it, or even plates. Instead having to rummage around ourselves for some napkins. A pretty poor show for such an establishment.

The room and private bar were booked until 6pm, but at 4pm we were told that our bar server was leaving, so we would have to walk around to another bar if we wanted drinks. We didn’t need to visit another bar area as we left early to grab a McDonalds before driving home as we were so hungry.

A beautiful setting which is thoroughly let down by poor service and substandard food at extortionate prices.

This was the fourth time we have stayed in this beautiful hotel and it never fails to impress.

First of all I would like to stress that I totally disagree with a recent review that criticised the decor as they thought it was not in keeping with the building. My wife and I both thought that the recent refurbishment is absolutely in keeping with this building. The decor is stunning; it is extremely well thought out; it flows really well from room to room and the choice of fabrics and colours is perfect. The new decor actually enhances the building’s original features. It is a true marriage of styles.

Our room was a junior suite. Very comfortable and again very well appointed.

The staff, as we have found previously, are all very friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic. We had dinner there on the two nights we stayed and the menu was varied and interesting, as well as being well presented. Most importantly of course, it tasted great.

One small (hopefully constructive ) criticism I would make is that we were disappointed they have stopped doing the pre dinner canapés, which were always a great start to the evening meal. This may have been a cost saving measure ( as they previously came as a “complimentary” extra) but we would be happy enough to pay for these as an optional extra.

Overall , this was another very enjoyable stay and we will certainly return.

My first impressions of Horsted Place was positive apart from the potholes on the drive from the main road to the car park. It is an imposing property set in lovely grounds. Inside you are met with high ceilings and a tastefully decorated main entrance hall that runs the entire length of the building. The same standard of décor continues up to the first-floor landing via a magnificent ornate staircase. Unfortunately, this seems to be the extent of the expected level of quality.
We had booked what is supposed to be a ‘Superior Suite’ (The Edinburgh Suite) but the only thing that could be construed as being superior about it was its size. The main room has both a bedroom and large lounge area. Whilst perfectly serviceable, the adjoining bathroom is on the small side to justify accompanying a superior suite as it has a relatively narrow bath with a shower attachment above it, a single basin and toilet.
The wooden furniture throughout is, to say the least, ’very tired’. Most pieces are heavily chipped and stained. The armchair in particular should have no place in a hotel room in its current condition. It has a ripped arm with a hole in it as well as numerous other pieces of wear / damage.
Both roller blinds in the room are absolutely disgusting. They are badly stained, damaged and dirty. It is evident they must have been in this condition for a very long time. One of the curtain ties is totally threadbare and there are other areas of damage to curtaining.
The wallpaper is badly stained in a number of places, most notably in the corner area between the bed and the window where what looks like water damage runs from virtually the ceiling to the floor. It is unsightly and looks dirty.
Overall, in its current condition, this room is unappealing and grubby.
There was no member of management on site when I tried to discuss these matters in person but in a subsequent email, the manager (Mr Faries) acknowledged the fact that they need to refurbish the restaurant and lounge and have so far only completed the entrance hall and 3 of the bedrooms. He has openly admitted that the other bedrooms all need redecoration and upgraded furniture and fittings. They have supposedly identified the Edinburgh Suite as being a priority room. Mr Faries also confirmed the stained wallpaper was as a result of damage to a downpipe but offered no explanation as to the poor state of the other furnishing nor why this room continues to be marketed as superior which is simply unjustified.
This hotel undoubtedly has a lot of potential. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good but the main element you are paying for as a guest, i.e. the room, is unacceptable in this condition and totally undermines any other positives.
Do avoid disappointment, I would advise giving Horsted Place a wide berth until such time as their proposed refurbishment and upgrading is fully completed.

We had a one night stay which had been rearranged because of bad weather and the staff were extremely helpful in changing the booking.
We had decided to treat ourselves to the Windsor Suite and it was superb! Beautiful views of the grounds from the windows, a massive bed and loads of space.
We loved the relaxing feel of the lounge, with a log fire keeping us nice and warm nice relaxing music playing in the background added to the ambience.
We ate in the restaurant and the food was good. I had a bit of an issue with the duck breast though. It was the most expensive item on the menu but the fat hadn’t been rendered down and the skin was soft and soggy rather than crispy as it should have been. I brought it to the waiters attention and he made the chef aware and came back and said that it would be taken off of the bill. These things happen but it was good that it was dealt with extremely efficiently and satisfactorily.
All of the staff were polite, friendly, efficient and attentive - nothing was too much trouble.
I wouldn’t say it was a cheap stay and the wine list was a little limited with only 3 types of red or white that was sold by the glass and the wine we liked was only by the bottle and, although it was lovely, it was rather pricey. I guess that is the way of things nowadays. Would have been good to have had a little more choice by the glass though!
Breakfast was good and once again the staff were efficient and friendly.
All in all a lovely night away from the stresses of life!

What has happened???
Horsted Place used to be 100% reliably lovely. Had a family wedding here in 2008, and family and friends have been coming ever since for a treat or special occasion. Was always excellent. Not today sadly.
Came for lunch today for an “0” birthday. No one took our coats, they lay on chairs in the lounge whilst we looked at the menu, then hung on our chairs in the dining room. There were 3 main courses to choose from. We were a table of four, but still one meal was not what we ordered, by the time the correct meal arrived the rest of us had finished eating. We were rather lost on a huge table for eight, and it was laid so every one of us had the table legs in the middle of our chairs. There was a choice of 3 puddings or cheese, but they had run out of one of the puddings. Service was very polite but incredibly slow, an hour after arriving we still hadn’t started our meal. When our bill arrived no concession was made for their mistake with our choice, we had to ask for it. We were sent to reception to pay, who tried to send us back to the dining room to pay.
I don’t know what has happened, but something has gone badly wrong somewhere. It’s so disappointing to look forward to a special occasion and be so let down. Felt very sorry for my Mum, her birthday is going to be memorable for all the wrong reasons. A real shame. Will not be returning.

We attended my mothers 90th birthday celebration lunch on 2nd June. What a total disappointment, having traavelled for 5 hours. The buffet consisted of asparagus tips, small boa buns, deep fried cod pieces and fried vegetables. Dessert was finger sized vanilla cheesecake and the smallest little pots consisting of 2 raspberries 2 blueberries and a strawberry topped with a swirl of cream , which was impossible to eat as you were given a dessert spoon and the pot would only enable a teaspoon into it| This so called hot buffet priced at £40 per head!! The food ran out very quickly before everyone had a chance to help themselves as like many hotels a little is put out and then topped up but when we asked if there was some more food to come out we were told that if we wanted anymore we would have to pay for it|| The young waitress was sent out to tell us this as I felt that maybe the manager was too embarressed to show his or her face. Poor show Horsted Place as this was recommended, and I would advise anyone booking to check what are you getting for your money. The venue was booked from 1pm until 6pm. but many of the party left to find somewhere to eat before returning home.
