5 of us just spent 4 wonderful days here on a hiking holiday. The camp is in the bush (you need a 4x4 to get through the sand) and about 40 mins off road from Kosi Bay main road. Willis will organise a lift if you don't have a 4x4. We stayed in a super simple reed building totally open to the elements (if you wanted to be.). You could lie in the balmy breeze and even hear the waves at night. there is a simple shower, with a toilet adjoining with no roof and open to the elements. Think sandy feet. Everything is simple and basic and just wonderful. You could read a book, watch birds, listen to music, take simple walks or drive to the beach (quite a long walk).
Willis was a fantastic host. We were due to stay only 2 nights there but we asked if we could stay the following two. He allowed us to re organise our hiking itinerary and was very chilled with all out requests. Our guide Agrippa was always cheerful and willing and took us each day to the most beautiful beaches and Palm nut forrest. We also had a wonderful boat trip on the lakes and snorkelled each day. Food was simple. Take your own snacks and anything you especially like to eat as you may go hungry otherwise. We loved it and did not want to leave. The birdsong is incredible.
Willis knows his birds and is a font of knowledge about the area. Do not expect trimmings. The kitchen is open air but fully equipped. There are staff to wash dishes and there was always boiling water ready for our tea early in the morning. Thank you Ellen. Willis actually brought us a tray of tea on our last morning! Hows that for service. Cant wait to get back.

Memela Bush camp is quite remote, about 25 km south of Kosi Bay. It is in the bush, just outside of the coastal forest reserve. Thick sand tracks get you from the 'main road' to the lodge and thick sand tracks are between the lodge and the beaches. It allows you access to the most beautiful, pristine and almost deserted beaches that I have ever visited. Blackrock, LaLa Nek, Dog Point, Rocktail Bay are all about a 20 minute to half an hour drive from the camp. We would park our vehicle on the top of the forest dunes, sling our wetsuits and snorkeling kit over our shoulders and walk through the forest down to the beach. The water is crystal clear and turquoise blue.
Willis and Janie who run the bush lodge are very friendly and helpful. We stayed in the tented camp and used the communical kitchen. The kitchen is fully kitted out for your every need. The tents are in good condition, on wooden platforms but the mattresses are not great - they are soft sponge and offer no support. The toilets and showers are really rustic, literally in the bush with reed walls and no ceilings. You can shower and watch the sun set if that's what you fancy.

If you like rustic and camping then you'll enjoy Memela. I feel it was overpriced for what we had compared with what you could get elsewhere. However, we had a great time and loved being able to visit such incredible places. Thanks Willis and Janie.
