This converted deserted home of Karakul sheep farmers is remotely situated in south-western Namibia, on the stunning NamibRand Nature Reserve. It lies about 110 km south of Sossusvlei accessible in a normal 2x4 vehicle. A farmhouse and 3 private and secluded campsites are available. The Family Hideout FARMHOUSE is simply yet comfortably equipped for self-catering groups of up to 10 people. The farmhouse offers solar lighting in each room, a large kitchen and extra wheelchair accessible bathroom, so 2 full bathrooms (hot shower, toilet and basin) and a separate toilet in total. The three private CAMPSITES for up to 8 people each are nestled a kilometre away in the dunes, out of sight of each other, and with own ensuite ablutions and roll-down blinds for wind protection. Our deluxe campsite (Jupiter) is fully wheelchair accessible, with a raised wooden deck and an extra roof. Solar energy is used for lighting, water pumping and heating. Enjoy the spectacular views over the vast plains and ancient blue mountain ranges, set out on foot or by 4x4 into the glowing red dunes for a close encounter with the fascinating variety of Namib Desert fauna and flora. The kids will love the dune-boarding and endless open spaces. Both the house and the campsites boast a small water-hole just a few metres away, attracting a myriad of birdlife and wildlife. The exceptional surroundings and clarity of the air provide endless opportunities for photography by day and stargazing by night. Guided drives, walks, fat bike hire, dune-boarding and short 4x4 self-drive trail are available. The compulsory PARK FEE charged per person per night in addition to your overnight rate goes towards the conservation of this unique and fragile environment.

Our stay at the hideout was absolutely lovely. Remote, dark skies, Oryx and other animals roaming the camping area, a handicapped accessible tent which provided us a fabulous camping experience. Having arrived during one of the biggest wind storms around, we stayed inside the tent facility on a handicapped platform which enclosed with tent flaps. Although we had to cook our dinner in the shower facility to stay out of the wind, it was large enough to accommodate the process. The toilet facility was clean and the area neat. This site is also accessible to the Sossivlei area but because it was more remote, we did not have to deal with any tourists, noise, or disturbances. During this time of Pandemic, the staff were wonderful, accommodating, and helpful. We would absolutely recommend this site for families as there was adequate space to run and roam, and the braai area large enough to accommodate families.

It should be noted that the check in was extremely efficient and followed all pandemic protocols. Thanks to the staff, they were helpful, professional, and just really nice during our entire trip.

We had a lovely time at Namib Rand, the seclusion was extremely welcome and the evening star show was spectacular. Our host, Andrew, was a great guy and took us sandboarding down a dune on the reserve. The facilities were clean with a decent amount of space in the washroom cabin - particularly welcome when we had to make a hasty retreat to escape the 5pm winds

Why do I say ‘almost secluded’ - the flies! They simply do not leave you alone and are incredibly persistent. If we had our time again we would have taken a good supply of coils and sprays to ward off the menaces.

We really enjoyed Venus, although apparently some inconsiderate person had thrown a smashed rear windscreen under the cabin and there was quite a bit of glass debris about which could do with clearing up. That said we were joined by a friendly Bok who came and sat under a tree opposite us for an hour while we did our crossword.

We recently stayed at Jupiter camp. It is a beautiful private location with great camp facilities. The wind shelter, deck & benches and cooking spaces were well laid out and very user friendly. There was always a shady spot away from the hot sun. The site is surrounded by small sand dunes which we found very interesting to walk around on - so many tracks and bugs and interesting little things. We did a 2 hr drive with Frankie which gave us a feel for the surrounding landscape. Would have liked to do the 4 hr drive for a wider traverse, but not available at the time. We were a little disappointed with our 'private' waterhole as it was small and unlit, so when the sun went down you couldn't see anything. Around the reserve we saw Oryx, springbok, giraffe, bat eared fox, lots of birds. On top of the 'Boarding' dune we had amazing sunset view and drinks. The farmhouse is set on an open plain (no sandunes) but it has a great and busy waterhole. Between Venus and Orion, Venus has a more private setting but both look out onto vast plains with sandunes behind. Would definately recommend a visit to Namib Rand.

Thanks so much for your comprehensive review! The reason for not lighting up our waterholes is because our nature reserve is a Dark Sky Reserve, and we'd hate to spoil your awesome view of the night skies!

This remote campsite is located in the NamibRand area, which is one of the most beautiful areas in Namiba. Well worth a stop south from Sesriem. It is a ways off the main gravel highway on a 4x4 road, but worth the effort to get there. The sites are nestled at the base of sand dunes so there is not a view from the sites (but good to be sheltered) and the area surrounding is incredible. The sites all have private outdoor kitchen, seating, flush toilets, screened shower - with power and hot water - while being out of sight of any buildings or other campers. Exceptional.

Thanks for the review! I'm happy to say that our entrance road has just been fixed up, and is not a 4x4 road, but a high clearance vehicle is recommended. Power is available at our deluxe campsite Jupiter.

We were fortunate to travel just after the unseasonably wet Namibian conditions at the end of March 2022. Namib Rand Family Hideout was our highlight of our travels. The bathroom and kitchen setup at the camp made one feel as though your were Glamping! A large flat a level site to position the car meant no leveling was required. But it is the views that struck us in the chest. They were breath taking. With the grasses all green from the rain we felt we could have been in the serengeti somewhere. We spent the afternoon sipping our drinks on the red dunes while our daughter enjoyed painting the view and rolling down the dunes. Later on as the sun set and night fall arrived we were treated to an electric storm on the horizon as the stars came out to dance for us. BEST SPOT EVER! We will definitely return!

We stayed at Jupiter camp, which appears the most isolated. It has a large wooden deck, with wheelchair access, with a kitchen area, a raised second deck, which can be closed off with canvas sides to keep out rain, wind or sun, and then a large shower area separate from a toilet. There are plenty of camelthorns around, and you look out over a depression surrounded by dunes. There is a water hole in front of you, and a birdbath. There is solar power electricity. It is in a wonderful setting, and a really nice place to hang out, and go for a walk in the dunes. The sunset was awesome. While we did not see many animals at the camp, the drive in an out was great, and we say four groups of bat eared foxes on the road out. It is a really nice isolated campsite, with a close to nature experience. Everything was clean and worked. There is no firewood, ice, food, drinks etc for sale, so bring your own. The water tastes great, so dont worry about that. The staff at reception was very friendly, and we were left alone which was nice.

Must be the top camping site in Namibia. The extra cost for the Jupiter site is well worth it and can be highly recommended.
It would be great if the self driving route could revert to the previous longer one.

we had a wonderful time camping at Namibrand. The campsite is thoughtfully laid out with a table, sink, light as well as good ablution - with a flush loo and a warm shower. We were very excited to see the dune lark - a special bird for the area. We hope to be back again soon.

We had booked the 3 camping site for friends and ourselves. All sites were well kept and clean, Jupiter has more shade and wind and rain protection as well as access for the handicapped. The 3 sites are within walking distance from each other although distant enough so that each is private and with a good view. The arranged outings were fun and the two guides were punctual and knowable.
