Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a family owned 58 hectare nature and wildlife reserve 15 minutes south of Port Douglas. Get there from Cairns via a spectacular 45 minute drive along Captain Cook Highway. Elevated on stilts, 83 eco designed timber bungalows are discretely concealed within the forest canopy, blending in with the natural environment and feature ocean, mountain or forest views. Panoramic views are enjoyed from open-sided Osprey's Restaurant across the forest canopy and beyond to the Coral Sea. Guests and visitors dine amongst birds in the surrounding treetops, whilst enjoying modern Australian cuisine with friendly and attentive service. Granite boulders, waterfalls and overhanging trees create natural swimming pools blending discretely within the environment. Paths wind through rainforests and woodlands, connecting with secluded coves and beaches, passing through habitats for endemic birds, wildlife and flora. Guests enjoy complimentary guided nature tours by onsite rangers including tree planting, stargazing at an outdoor observatory, beach discovery, wildlife walks and bird-watching tours. A completely organic 650 tree coconut plantation is home to a unique coconut odyssey tour highlighting the extraordinary qualities of the 'tree of life'.

Located about 15min south of Port Douglas and 47min form Cairns airport this is an amazing place to stay. Although it has 80 plus bungalows spread around the headland they are well spaced and connected by sealed paths. We had a Coral Sea Bungalow with a stunning view over Oak Beach and surrounding forest and mountains. The room was well appointed with comfy king bed, ceiling fans and effective air conditioning. A fairly large balcony with its own ceiling fan was great at night, sitting with wine in hand watching the light from the setting sun. The pools, restaurant and bar are all very good although a surprising feature is that you really need to use their golf cart service to get around as the paths are quite steep in places. This was never a problem as they always picked up quickly and took us anywhere on the reserve. Super friendly staff.

The massage service was one of the best we have ever experienced and while not cheap it was 90 minutes of pure bliss. Likewise the nature reserve has plenty of walks and access to both Oak Beach and Pebbly Beach. A top resort to stay at in north Queensland.

Once you arrive at Thala Beach Nature Reserve you instantly relax and are greeted with the most genuinely friendly staff in the world. From being welcomed by Johan letting us checkin early making everything super easy for us to taking us with a gold buggy to the room which our kids loved, to all the friendly and helpful reception staff to the restaurant staff especially Anne who was always happy to answer all our questions and become our personal visitor information guide at breakfast time. All restaurant staff were always friendly and happy to change orders to our special dietary needs without fuss. Even the cleaning ladies always had a big smile for us when walking past.
The accomodation is clean and beautifully set in between nature so you do feel like being part of nature and far away from the concrete jungle. Our kids enjoyed the adventure and all the paths around the property with all the viewing stations and many walks part of the accomodation.
We have absolutely Loved our stay here and are already planning to return as soon as we can.

Privileged location, beautiful views, nice beach, delicious food. Menu is somewhat limited, didn’t change in the 4 days we were here, a little pricey, but very well executed. There was no laundry service (new provider apparently), which is a major issue when you are on a month long trip around Australia and NZ. Also had issue with towel availability (new provider). Rooms are cleaned every other day. Staff is super nice, always smiling and hoping to please. Hotel is far away from town, 20-25 minute car ride, and shuttle availability is an issue, so not having a car limits mobility options, as Uber and taxis are not available. Major issue: no wifi in rooms, basically no TV service, excellent wifi and internet in main building. Having wifi is important when it rains unseasonably for 36 hours non stop and you don,t have a car.

After several months of study and work it was time for a break for myself and my wife. We were looking for a relaxing getaway to unwind and recharge.

Let me start with the good. Location, close to both Port Douglas and Palm Cove Thala Beach Nature reserve is well positioned with captivating views. The staff are friendly and drifting off to sleep to the sound of the ocean each night was bliss.

However, while the cabins are clean and well presented they are outdated. After check in and a quick buggy ride to our room the one point that the gentleman was very pleased to point out was that the resort had been plastic free for years....maybe he forgot to check the bathrooms. so, what's in the room/on offer, Tea and coffee selection that you would find at any road side motel/hotel, no nespresso or coffee pod machine no WIFI a king bed that is NOT a king bed no in room dining unless picnic hampers count, lucky Port Douglas is a short drive away. No robes or slippers no Foxtel/Stan/Netflix or similar no movies, you can borrow a old DVD from reception but it costs $30 deposit and I recommend you bring your own pillow unless you like "pancake" pillows. At least the rooms are value for money. All of this or lack there of for around the $400 a night for just the room.

Maybe the food is where the resort gains it's stars. Unfortunately not. Breakfast was poor and far to expensive for what was on offer. A quick drive to port Douglas or palm cove presented several places that offer far better food and far better prices. And looking at the lunch and dinner I was glad Port Douglas was just up the road and palm cove around the corner.

The beach is a short stroll away and has hammocks and sun lounges.... unfortunately they to are run down and faded and the beach shack, Herbie's, looks like it has been closed for many years.

To summarise, great location, peaceful surroundings with friendly staff so if you are looking to relax and get away from the noise of the city and recharge this could be for you. However, if you are looking for value for money, keep driving.

I was pleasantly surprised after only looking online to make a booking the night before and it said they were booked out. But I went on the wait list that night and the next morning I had an email confirming our booking. Great customer service. The location of the restaurant is amazing looking out over the treetops to the water. We started with cocktails at the bar which were delicious and reasonable price. Our waitress explained that due to staff shortages was why the website was displaying that they were booked out. Our meals were good but the service could be better. We had to ask all the time for different things like could they clear away empty glasses, had to catch the waitress eye to call her over to place orders. A bit inattentive and busy talking to other staff. What was amazing was considering the location is off the beaten track, an old school friend that I haven’t seen in 45yrs who did the same kind of booking I did was there for lunch as well. Meant to happen and now I will have great memories of our lunch. I would recommend going here for lunch as it is a beautiful location to see during the day.

My wife and I stayed at Thala for four nights. The staff were always very helpful during our stay. The rooms and main buildings were in very good condition and well maintained for what must be a very intense climate at times. I recommend having access to a car when you stay here because it is out of town but they can arrange transport if you need it.

We spent two nights at Thala Beach Nature Reserve and had a wonderful & relaxing break. The natural setting in the rainforest is stunning with lots of wildlife & birds. The staff were superb, friendly & helpful throughout our stay. All the meals were absolutely delicious from hearty breakfasts to gourmet dinners all eaten at the Osprey restaurant with stunning views over the hills & ocean. The accommodation in the Eucalypt Bungalow was spacious with aircon to ensure a good nights sleep. During the day we went on the Rainforest walk (keep a look out for pink ribbons to guide the way), walked on the beach and swam in the pools. All in all a fantastic break away & we will definitely return.

We booked a cabin with water views which was nice but the decor , cabinetry and en-suite look like they haven’t been touched since the place opened .
The safe is a steel box that is bolted to the floor but we had to ask for a key to be delivered to our room . We also brought our own wine to enjoy in our room only to find that there was no bottle opener and only 1 in the hole resort that we could borrow and have to return .
One of the nights we borrowed a DVD that was unwatchable due to constant skipping .
We decided to have dinner NYE at Ospreys . We asked if they were doing anything special for the night and the response we got was “No Music “ .
The food we ordered was Luke warm for all dishes which was disappointing .
Also the AC stopped working for the last two nights
The resort itself was nice with many a nice walk on the beach and we managed to catch site of some of the local animals which was great .
Maybe the cost of accommodation contributes to the overall maintenance of the resort .
Unfortunately would not visit again unless they did major renovations to the cabins .

Four of us had a couple of nights here. Thala Lodge has the WOW factor when you walk in. The reception, restaurant and bar are just stunning and the staff could not have been more welcoming. There are 2 fresh water pools too small to exercise in, but fun to cool off in. The grounds are magnificent but the paths are not for the unfit and could be lit better at night time. The bungalows need a facelift. The beds are not that comfortable by today's standards and everything about the accommodation just looked and felt a bit tired and in need of modernisation. The surrounding rainforest is stunningly beautiful; this is as close to nature as you can get! We walked along their private beach, again beautiful but the facilities were neglected apart from the loo which seemed to be maintained. The advertised Cafe didn't look like it had brewed a coffee for years and the sun-loungers and chairs were old and filthy. I know that it must be hard to maintain things in the weather, but at these prices, you would expect more. The highlight was the restaurant; we dined in both nights and the menu, wine list and food was out of this world! The service was good particularly from the German girl (sorry can't remember her name) but there was one waiter (bit scruffy looking) who insisted on interrupting our conversation every time he came to the table which got a bit annoying by the second night. He needs some training! I had read about Thala Lodge for years in the travel press and it was a bucket list lodge for me; perhaps the press hype had set my expectations too high.

I booked two nights for my wife Marianne’s birthday, 21/08

We know Thala from many visits for coffee, breakfast and walks on the beach. An amazing place.

Staying there is more than next level.

We were treated to an amazing room / cabin, just lovely meals, genuinely caring staff, from porters to front desk and in the restaurant .

You can do nothing, or go along with the fabulous walks, tours and special pampering spa treatments.

The birdlife and fauna is simply breathtaking.

We saw so many birds, monitor lizards, sea turtles, fish, dolphins....the list goes on.

Do yourself a favour.....if you want a unique and special experience.....serenity and so much more, go to Thala. We intend to go every year!

Don't Know if uber there as we had our own transport but PD is only 10klm and taxis would operate.Buses pick up at airport by arrangement. For some boat excursions they pick up and drop off.
