Linda’s De Oude Herberg was an oasis for us - with a phone call at 6:30 on a Monday night asking for rooms to accommodate 7 of us, she didn’t hesitate to check us in. The rooms are clean, the water is hot and the beds super comfy. The staff are friendly and Lexi, Linda’s dog, pops in to check up on you. Would recommend staying here on your trip up North.

My family and our in-laws stayed over for 3 days. What an absolute delight... central cooling, especially in such a hot place like Kenhardt, cosy, clean amenities, the friendliest and warmest host, Linda...what a pleasure! If you ever up that way...why not stay.

We certainly enjoyed every minute of it.

Lovely comfortable accommodation. Good facilities and welcoming hostess. Secure parking for vehicles and trailers on the property. This is a good option for travelling from Cape Town to Kgalagadi and back.

We camped overnight and were given a bathroom in a single room to use. It was filthy. Trash bin not emptied. Shower head lying on counter. Wash basin taps coming off. Kitchen sink tap off. The bed which we did not use, looked like this could be labours quarters? Lindah is a lovely person, but needs to check up here.

Linda, our host waited up for our evening arrival and gave us pick of the rooms available. We chose two twin bedrooms for our group of four ladies and shared the bathroom opposite the corridor. It was clean, warm and comfortable and the general kitchen met all our basic needs. Cell reception is good as the tower is adjacent, and the ex-hostel was in a rural setting. Recommended for a stop over for budget accommodation suiting group travellers.

We were made very welcome at the Lodge. However, we had arrived at a very unfortunate time, they were subjected to "Load Shedding" There was no power from around 17:00 until 02:00.

Our stay was otherwise comfortable and the breakfast excellent.

Was so nice having you and hope we will see somewhere in the future again. Yes, this load shedding thing is really a frustration and that is why we installed a generator and pressure pump for the water tanks. Everything to keep you as comfortable as possible

Tiny town, but we had to find accommodation on a budget - twice. Oude Herberg is basic, but has everything you need for a comfortable overnight stay. Comfortable beds, en suite bathrooms, warm blankets and friendly reception. It's a no-frills establishment at extremely reasonable prices. Accommodating host organised supper in town for us and gave us a big breakfast the next morning. Linda has made a real effort to make this place attractive. Nice personal touches.

: De Oude Herberg Country Lodge, Kenhardt, South Africa

Comments: A booking was made & paid for, months in advance for five people (3 rooms) for April 2018: When we arrived, we were told by the owner that she had contract workers staying on a permanent basis and that she had organised alternative accommodation for us
At that stage (late in the day) we thought we had no alternatives. The house we were given was absolutely the most awful place I have ever stayed in in South Africa: Dank, all the carpets mouldy, smelling & a mosquito breeding site Awful bedding and mattresses ... this hostess should have given us advance notice and we would then have had the option to explore alternatives and to go to a different establishment. She knew well in advance that she could not help us but it seems that greed took over ... Surely it’s Unacceptable business practice to accept a booking and payment and then mess us around like this?
I would like others to know that when they book on the website they may very well not get given the accommodation as advertised
I feel very strongly that this should be taken further : The owner was completely unapologetic when we gave her our feedback
She has since made a partial repayment, which in no way is fair compensation

The second house, De Kleine Herberg is by no means inferior. It was totally newly renovated recently. Maybe you expected five-star accommodation, I don’t know. No place in Kenhardt have more than one star. I’m not a greedy person, I only did what I think the best would be for you. I have two guesthouses and when one has in excess of 6 en-suite rooms with working guests, I prefer to put tourist in the second house. A practical solution, because the working people like to go to bed early and go to work early, whilst the tourist want to stay up later and rise later. For the two parties not to disturb each other, this worked quite well in the past. I did however explain the whole matter with Mike when you got here. I apologize and thought that I did you a favor. Regarding the carpets, there are no change of moldiness, because of our extremely dry area and drought the last few years. Regarding the bedding, it is new linen, washed and ironed, with cloud nine matrasses, Lady DI and coral fleece blankets. Regarding the fact that I was unapologetic- I haven’t seen you to apologize but apologize to Mike and offer to pay him back. The cost for bed and breakfast for three rooms, 5 people were R1789.50 (R297.90 for the room and R60 per person for breakfast) and I paid you back R1521.08 due to banking cost and the use of water, electricity and other amenities. I did another payment yesterday for the R268.62 that I kept back. I apologize ones again for your bad experience and thank you for this review. It inspires me to do even better.

Kenhardt is a small little town and if one blinks you might have found yourself pass through it. It is situated about 160 km from Upington. We stayed there on our way up to the Kgalagadi Transfonteir Park, coming from Cape Town. We did not expect much, just a place to sleep over. But we were pleasantly surprised. In a town where everything is brown, the lodge is surrounded by palms, lawns and greenery. We had the privilege to stay in the Orange Room. Such a loving touch to that room, we enjoyed it thoroughly. The Lodge has lovely kind personnel and we also enjoyed a pleasant breakfast. Absolute value for money. It also has facilities for own cooking, fridges, Microwave etc. and is ideal for a big group or family!

After a very bad experience in Zeerust, we booked a night at this oasis in the Karoo. Linda is just one fabulous person, so friendly....although we did not meet her as her dad needed to be rushed to hospital. But....Hermanus checked us in, gave us the option to choose a room and was a fabulous host. The rooms are clean and beautiful decorated. We did not expect this for a small town like Kenhardt. Just shows that in the small towns you find far better personal service than in the larger towns/cities. If you ever travel through Kenhardt a stay here is a must and I can only image a cup of coffee with the amazing owner, Linda. Linda....keep up the great work, you are making a difference. We definitely left a part of our hearts in Kenhardt. May your guest house only grow from strength to strength....you and your lovely staff deserve it.

"Ask for a room away from the kitchen area as other guests were somewhat inconsiderate and made a noise late into the evening. The quietest rooms are those leading off of the diningroom."
