We enjoyed a relaxing 10 days at Fancy Free fly fishing retreat. Weather was all over with thunderstorms, scorching days and mist filled cool days. Still the fishing was good with numerous quality brown and rainbow trout landed in the 1-2 kg range. There were a couple of monster fish which parted the 2x tippet, will be returning for these leviathans! As always we experienced great hospitality from Vaughn and his team. A pristine venue with endless natural beauty and wild life around every corner. Great informative hatchery tour as well. We will definitely be back.

Thanks to Vaughn+Carol for a fantastic weekend.
Was our 2nd time here+1st stay in Matuka and Woolly Bugger.
Our group consisted 11 people.
Electric blankets, abundant Crockery and Cutlery, a huge supply of wood and immaculately maintained accommodation.
Boys caught trout and Bass and we chilled out!
We can't wait to return.

This place is not just for you if you are and eager fly fisherman/woman, although that was great too ;) This is also a great location for a relaxing, calming weekend and even a great spot for a romantic getaway. We had it all rolled into one. We caught some really nice trout and bass, had a picnic under the pine trees, saw a variety of birds and when the weather turned cold, rainy and misty, we had an awesome time relaxing in front of the fireplace. You can bring your own decoder, but honestly, why would you if you can get in some real quality time...
Make sure you bring something for every possible season, they can all happen on one day and is amazing to experience. And make sure to pack the hot chocolate and mini marshmallows + a good book you can read to each other or some games. It's so much nicer than watching TV.
The setup is great and you have all you need in the little kitchen. And if you forgot something, town is just 6km away - just don't expect to much from the shops ;)
Carol was really helpful and since we've been on holiday for 2 weeks already, was nice enough to let me do our laundry there.
Thank you for a great stay. We'll do it again if the opportunity arises.

The cabin was dirty, the place is not maintained, the hospitality is appalling, the cabins are not comfortable, the cabins are dated and not maintained, the cleaning service was shocking to say the least, the poor horses (picture on the website) are so neglected it's a shame and crime to animals, the cabins are not adequately stocked for self-catering, it's not a very international guest/traveler friendly farm - more like a local private farm with cabins for their close family & friends who don't expect much from a hospitality/tourism point of view, it was the most terrible experience of my life and a complete waste of time. No one expecting more than a 2* experience from a tourism perspective should ever be recommend to stay at Fancy Free!!!

The lodges are well maintained and provide a warm country atmosphere for visitors with scenic views of the trout dams. The relaxed surroundings are complimented by the excellent fishing on offer in the various dams situated within walking distance from the lodges. Invicta cottage has a spectacular view from the large porch, where one can sit and enjoy breakfast or a summer braai.

Chalet was cosy and well stocked, great fire place. Warm blankets and tranquil experience. A variety of dams to choose from. Great big bath for lazing in. Visiting the Hatchery was a must. Didn't have too many bites but was worth the outing.

Spent the last week at Fancy Free Flyfishing Retreat in Machadodorp.
Thank you Vaughn+parents for excellent customer service.
Stayed in Invicta Cottage.
Had everything for a comfortable stay and very clean.
Boys caught many bass but weather was too warm for trout to bite.
Vaughn was kind enough to lend my son his boat-that was the highlight of our trip!
Will recommend venue to friends+already planning our next visit.
