Stayed overnight for a night and whilst this is a charming hotel with lovely grounds, the amenities could be updated a little bit and it was a bit dead for a Friday evening.

Breakfast was lovely but some aspects just feel dated

We were on a team getaway and this place made for a great location. The setting of the Chantecler is just beautiful. The natural rock buildings and thatched roofs are outstanding with beautiful majestic old trees, rolling lawns, buck, horses, peacocks, ducks and a whole lot more. The gorgeous curios and sculptures at reception and in the restaurant were absolutely eye-catching. The rooms were simple but very neat and clean. The bathrooms didnt have the desired bath tub but the piping hot showers made up for it. The conference/meeting room facilities were adequate and the service was good with some staff members going out of their way to ensure that we had all that was needed. The best of all was Peter the chef. He made absolutely delicious food with some of the best pastas and salads I have eaten anywhere. His creamed spinach and chunky chips are extremely moreish. His attention to detail and drive to please was very endearing, going out of his way to make the foodie experience as ultimate as possible. The buffet was more than generous at every meal; and the full breakfast was superb. As for the rest of the waitrons, some customer focused training is urgently needed. Besides that, I will happily go back for one of Peter's delicious meals.

Great spot to chill out for the day.... and only a short drive from Durban in the Drummond area, this hotel has been around for years, serene and restful ambience with frequent visits from a family of peacocks and hens, reminds me of a little bit of English charm in South Africa

I have been on trip advisor for many years and always make sure I write reviews for excellent experiences. I tend not to write a mediocre or a bad review as I usually give a place the benefit of the doubt that it might have just been a bad day and I dont want to affect somebody's livelihood. However, from start to finish The Chantecler Hotel needs a major attitude adjustment firstly by its Hotel Manager Sheryl, to the virtually non existent receptionist Nicole and to staff that dont return items that get left in the rooms. After leaving my adapter with a Samsung charger in the kettle plug and a very expensive electric toothbrush in the shower, I phoned them several times to tell them I had left them there and we would come to fetch the following day. My phone calls were never returned and after several conversations (of which I had to make to them) with Sheryl who is extremely rude and should not be in the hospitality business, I was told several stories, however I just decided to highlight the statements made to me below:
* You have misplaced them
* The guests after you must have taken them
* Nobody wants your old toothbrush (it is a R3000 Oral B toothbrush of which the brush can easily be removed and replaced)
* We throw toothbrushes away
Not only were the sheets torn and sewn together with blue cotton but this type of attitude from management is unacceptable - anything left in a room should be returned immediately and if not, staff should be questioned and an investigation done. Sheryl insisted that her staff were entirely innocent and instead repeatedly blamed the guests after us which of course would have come into a room cleaned out by her staff members. I would never stay here again.

A friend was having his 50th at the Chantecler Hotel so we thought it made sense to spend the night at the Hotel. On arrival we were greeted by the receptionist who handed us our key and pointed us in the direction of the room. The hotel is extremely outdated and it was freezing in the rooms. There is no tv, a small summer duvet on the double bed which would never keep one warm, pillows which are hard, flat and rock like and no room fridge. The small lounge / reception are are cluttered with large wooden animals and the only tv must be at least 20 years old. The lounge suite has no back pillows so make for a very uncomfortable seating. Although we had phoned ahead to check that we would get wi-fi when we arrived we were advised that the wi-fi was not working and no explanation as to why or when it would be working was offered. We decided to check out before checking in as we knew that we would not be able to sleep in the room. The rooms would have been acceptable at half the rate but are definitely too expensive for what they offer. We would have been charged R1200 p.n. We phoned across the road and found a beautiful room in an establishment offering comfortable beds, feather duvets, room heaters, carpets at exactly half the price for the night.
On the other hand we attended the 50th and the food served at the function was delicious and the evening extremely enjoyable.

HHad the privilege to attend a wedding at Chantecler. The venue is stunning, the service brilliant and the food outstanding. Peaceful and tranquil is what comes to mind. This is the place to either spend a romantic weekend or re-charge your batteries.

Was booked in for Sunday 24 March 2019, booked through daddy's deals.
The honeymoon suit was booked and paid for, upon arrival the honeymoon suit was NOT available. The room that was given to us had a terrible smell, toilet leaking, ceiling fan wobbling, and was bitten by something on the bed, well enough said.
We left this establishment later that evening, didnt even stay the night. An email was drafted to this establishment with NO reply. If you pay for a honeymoon suit surely if they cant deliver on what you paid for, there must be apology or a discount of some sort. Pictures attached: View from the "HONEYMOON SUIT"..

This hotel is a wonderful hidden gem ideal for any one that wants to see nature and get away from the busy hustle and bustle. We had a great tasting lunch outside on the lovely patio while looking at the beautiful peacocks and surroundings.

we have heard of this Hotel from friends and living in Pietermaritzburg strangely had never heard of it. So this last Sunday we arranged to go for Lunch. Please remember very Important Please book before hand. Well from the time you turn off the main road you are magically transported into another place. its very green even though we have a water problem the road is narrow like an English country lane. you go down down down and then there it is. A beautiful stone building surrounded by trees. there is a Chapel for weddings.a small lake which looked a little sad but due to the lack of rain one can understand. The sound of Music could be heard as they had a one lady band playing which was great. we sat outside under a huge umbrella surrounded by Trees and ferns and the sounds of peacocks could be heard and then seen around as they walk freely among the diners. The Buffet was tremendous there is a Starter, mains and then dessert all eat as much as you like. we got there for 12H30 and when we went for starters the Chef said to me pace yourself Sir we are here till 3 pm. this is great because you are not rushed for Lunch. the one thing that i do have to niggle about is that the drinks were a little slow in coming but once again they were very busy and the food and the atmosphere and the venue certainly made up for that. So to my fellow advisers be ye local or may you be visiting from afar this is a place that has to be visited. they have some amazing rooms so a stay would be on the cards. i will be visiting again shortly. price of the Sunday Buffet R 115.00 or approx (6 Pounds). That my friends is a steal.

We spent 3 nights at the Chantecler Hotel, the rooms were large and comfortable. There were some items missing like a bedside lamp but after we enquired, the staff were quick to help us. The staff were friendly and helpful. My biggest complaint was that there was no filter coffee at breakfast, although you could order. The breakfast was very simple but tasty.
We had dinner there one night, strangely the specials were more expensive than the prices on the menu - someone slipped up there!
