We rented an entire house in this lovely community this past weekend. My husband rented the house through AirBnB; it doesn’t seem to me that the HOA rents any properties directly. We were just looking to get out of DC for the weekend, though the 3 hour drive each way is a lot of driving for a weekend.

There were 6 of us (4 adults, 2 teens) and our two small dogs (for an additional fee). The home we rented was spacious, with three bedrooms, 2 full baths and one half bath, full size washer and dryer, a huge, well equipped kitchen, 1 car garage with several nice bikes, a screened in porch, a gas fireplace, an outside grill, and, oddly, a grand piano. Didn’t see that one coming… The bedrooms sleep 6 and two bedrooms have comfortable futons for that could accommodate 2 additional sleepers.

Our visit was off season on Easter weekend and there were very few other occupied houses. We did see numerous golfers brave the cutting winds and cold to play. This community is clean and neat, we would take our dogs’ waste easily over to nearby dumpsters for disposal. The shuttle is not running at this time of the year and you need to have a car to get to town. We didn’t pay the expensive amenities fee because it was too cold out for tennis, the outdoor pool is closed for the season, and the indoor pool was apparently closed for repairs, so I cannot comment on how good they are. $35 seems a little high, however.

This is a good location, however, and the house we rented was great. The community seems safe and was very quiet - coming from a busy city, it was almost too quiet!! It’s a short drive to the beach and the supermarket is a short drive. I’d stay at this particular rental house or a similar property at this community again.

The accommodations at Bear Trap dunes are set around the beautiful and lush golf course. You can either book a home directly with Bear Trap on their website or use an owner site such as VRBO which is what we did. There are many different size of home, we took a town house which are typically 3-bed, 2.5 bath and a single family home. The place we had was huge and definitely large enough to sleep 6 adults. The houses themselves seem fairly new and the place is picture perfect really, nice landscaping, the houses are all painted in toning colors and you can tell that people make a real effort to keep things looking nice. Seems like there are a lot of owner-occupiers also rather than renters. The site is well spread out so if you have small children I suggest renting as close to the pool/pavilion as possible. There are two pools are Bear Trap and the main one is at the pavilion (also an indoor pool there too and gym) so that you don't have to get in the car every time you want to hit the pool. The further home from the pavilion is probably a 25 minute walk (and I walk pretty fast) or a few mins drive. There is also a childrens play park (at the opposite end of the resort to the pavilion!!!!) which is nicely equipped. However, due to the heat in July it is really only useable in the early morning as the play things get way too hot to use - even at 10am the slide etc was hot even though made of plastic. Its fine but just don't bank on getting a lot of use out of it during the main day during the summer. The pavilion staff are helpful and the pavilion itself is fine housing a small gym area and the changing rooms/lockers etc. The indoor pool is not huge but hardly anyone used it while we were there. It is definitely a lap pool. The main pool was well used by folks and has two lifeguards on duty. Plenty of loungers etc by the pool. There is a small toddler pool in a gated section (no lifeguards, parents to be with child at all times) adjoining the main pool area. We used this a lot with our two year old. There is no snack bar or cafe but there is a vending machine. Lots of noodles/water toys too. They do "adult only" swim for 15 minutes out of the hour in the main pool just to be aware!!! The kids seemed not to mind though as they all sit on the side during that time and wait to be let back in.

We tried the Golf Club House bistro during our stay and it was fine. VERY large portions and good value for money, its not haute cuisine...more burgers, sandwiches, fries etc. Again - very family friendly though and great views of the course so you can't really go wrong to try it if you are staying there! Good service also and has indoor/outdoor seating.

The resport is about 5 minutes drive from a SuperG supermarket and about 10 mins drive from Bethany Beach itself. We never ran into any traffic to get to either place during July.

I would recommend this place to families or large groups looking for a quite and relaxing vacation near the beach or to play golf.

Lovely setting, plenty to do and a family neighborhood feel makes this a great vacation spot. I don't agree with the gentleman that $35.00 is too much to pay it amounts to $7.00 a day. My pool at home charges $5.00 a day for a guest pass! For this fee we had access to 2 outdoor and 1 indoor pool, 1 basketball court, 4 tennis courts, 2 playgrounds and a state of the art work out facility. On top of all of that we could ride a shuttle to the beach as often as we wanted to do it. As far as the cost, we didn't have to buy a pass for everyone in our house. We bought 4 and shared them as needed and it worked out fine.

I would like to start by saying that this is a very nice and clean community. Our problem really lied within the amenities. We came with a large group of 16 for a family reunion with ages from 13 to 82. To get right to the point we were very unhappy with the fact you were really held captive by the shuttle with regards to going into town, there is NO parking available in town, it was to far to walk and the shuttle that we were told would run about every 20 minutes sometimes were as long as an hour wait. Secondly the club house which is kept beautifully is not teen or even adult friendly depending on who is working the front desk at times. Tennis is only available on 1 court which is regularly booked unless you have special clay court shoes which then you have a choice, anytime, of four courts. The weight room which posts that ages 13 and up are allowed into with an adult, really means if the front desk feels like letting you in, even with an adult it will be up to them. And you must have ID for all kids to get in it proving their age which also might be denied and you have a good chance of being called a liar too. We did have a ridiculous confrontation with a gentleman (if you can call him that) over this exact issue in which he called me and my husband liars, told us to get a life and then asked my niece what kind of parents would allow a 13 year old in to a gym? He was out of line and a disgrace to Resort Quest. And all of this we payed over $500 in guest passes for. I will say that after speaking to the head of the sport pavilion, Lance, he was very apologetic and said he would look into it but as far as I am concerned the damage is done and we will never return, I'm sure that will make Russ happy!

We have been renting villas and single family homes from private owners on VRBO.com for many years. We vacation in the Bethany Beach area every summer and absolutely love it there! The bear Trap Dunes community is great for so many reasons...it is much more economical to stay at than the beach side locations. They have great amenities including several community pools, 3 nine hole golf courses, tennis courts and a fitness center with an indoor pool. They also have shuttles to the beach which run regularly. The community is really peaceful and very pretty. It is great to be able to walk around (or jog) the beautiful streets surrounding the golf courses. All of the rental properties we have stayed at have been fabulous with fully equipped kitchens and well maintained, comfortable furnishings! It is only a 5-7 minute drive to the beach and probably half the price of staying on the beach!

This is a very family friendly community. Consider renting from a private owner, make sure you get all important information before you get there. The pools are clean and warm, the club house has wifi and a desktop for you to use. The green fees for the golf course are high. Very good for relaxation.

My husband and I stayed here with six of our friends. The home is clean, spacious, and fully stocked. It is located about 10minutes from the beach. This place sleeps up to 10 people and there's a pull out couch too. The kitchen is fully stocked with glassware, flatware, and stemware and all the kitchen appliances you could ask for. It also has a dishwasher and laundry room. The garage is stocked with two bikes, a few beach chairs, buckets, and even a small cooler. This place had a bunch of DVDs, DVD player, and cable TV. The neighborhood is very quiet and nicely kept. This rental is a short drive to the community pool and recreation center. I highly recommend this rental for large groups or families. They really stock the place up with everything you need and it's very comfortable and is in a convenient location to the beach, grocery store, pool, etc.

I used to enjoy renting in this community, but have recently learned that the HOA at Bear Trap Dunes is now charging $35 per person for one week's use of the pool and shuttle to the beach. And it's only valid for one week!
Most families come here to rent 3 - 6 bedroom homes, typically with 6 - 10 people. That's an additional $350 or so for one week (the passes are not valid past that single week)!
Vote this measure down with your wallets and find another place to stay!

This was our second summer, family vacation at Bear Trap. The townhouse is lovely. The beds are comfortable, there's lots of bathrooms and the house is very clean. The kitchen is fairly well stocked with a few minor exceptions ( there was no bread knife and few cooking utensils and serving spoons) This is not something I would give the property a lower rating for.
My group consists of my husband and me and our adult unmarried children who come for part of the week.
I love the shuttle but if we have a large group heading to the beach, my husband drives. Learn the back ways if you are worried about traffic.
We used to go to the Outer Banks from NJ but the drive was too long. This is a lot of house for the money with lots of perks like the shuttle, the golf and the lovely pools. The best part is it's half the distance of the OBX trip. If my kids have a few days, they don't need a whole day's drive.
As for the people that knock the shuttle, driving to the beach is not impossible but you have to be patient. My husband would drop us and the gear and then go park. You can pay to park with your credit card. If you can find something more perfect, let's hear it.
And we love the magic theater nearby, Dickens Parlour theater.
