Offering warm and welcoming accommodation, an open-air restaurant, a gift shop, and a unique wedding and events venue, Mount Meru Game Lodge is set in beautiful, tranquil surroundings. The garden Sanctuary is home to water buffalo, birds and monkeys, including the elusive Colobus monkey. Conveniently located just 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the Lodge is an ideal starting point for your northern Tanzania safari. The property dates back to 1959 when Dr Andreas Von Nagy bought it as a family home. The main building dates back to the 1930s, when it was originally a manager's house on a coffee plantation. Dr Von Nagy was passionate about animals and turned the place into an animal sanctuary and orphanage. He set up the Mount Meru Wildlife Reserve in order to protect the wildlife on Mount Meru, what is now part of Arusha National Park. His home and passion attracted visitors from far and wide, rooms were added to accommodate his visitors and the Lodge was born.

We were the first guests they had hosted since the Covid lockdown and they went out of their way to make us feel safe and welcome. Alcohol gel and temperature checks on arrival, handwashing stations scattered about the premises and all staff keeping a safe distance from us while maintaining their friendly and helpful disposition.
Great service, brilliant food and considering we were not in the safari park, a large variety of wild life visible. Not every day you can have breakfast accompanied by water buffalo, zebras, ostriches and monkeys.

We stayed for 3 nights in March 2021 as a short break during a working visit to Tanzania on educational projects.

The lodge is proud of its heritage and the accommodation is in cottages that date back some 50 years or more, that said they have obviously been updated over the years and are very well maintained, so provide comfortable en-suite accommodation with a slightly “retro” appearance. We were in one of a pair of rooms that shared a verandah which only had comfortable seating for one couple. The room, communal areas and grounds were all kept very clean and tidy.

All the buildings are set in well maintained grounds with mature trees and shrubs and overlook a small animal sanctuary with a small variety of African grazing animals and birds. There is a small swimming pool. Despite only being a short driveway off the main road from Arusha to the airport the whole atmosphere of the lodge is very relaxing.

There is a bar and restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating on a pleasant terrace where there is also a wood fired pizza oven. All the food we had was freshly prepared, well presented and very tasty. The inclusive breakfast was a fruit platter, followed by a cooked option, all served with toast, and muffins and set us up very well for the day. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout.

We thoroughly enjoyed our spot of rest and relaxation at Mount Meru Lodge.

We knew that our safari would mean early mornings and possibly late evenings, and that we would be tired aftr that. So ... We asked our travel agent to find somewhere quiet and relaxing, with a pool for 3 nights at the end of our safari. They suggested this - and it looked fine.
We are so glad that we came here. It was delightful. Every single member of staff was charming, happy and talkative; our room (a separate cabin overlooking the site) had everything one would want; it had a pool, round which we spent most days; and the food was great - and far too plentiful. We weboomed for full board, and I never managed more than one course per meal (though my husband did!) because the poetions were so large. Everything was cooked individually and the flavours were delightful. Good south African wine too.
So, why not 5*? Simply because for that you eally need all the trappings, and this does not have them. But, they more than make up for this by their friendliness.
As others have noted, it is also a game park with some water buffalo, ostrich, zebra etc. Great to watch.
We would definitely recommend this for a list safari relax.

Wonderful to read that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay with us and that your expectations were met and exceeded. We so appreciate the time you have taken to review our Lodge and give other travellers a sense of what we are all about. Yes, indeed, we may not be a sophisticated 5-star establishment, but our setting, our history, our uniqueness, and hopefully our good service and welcoming ambience (and large portions!) more than make up for that. Asante sana. We hope to welcome you back some day. All our best wishes, from the team at Mountery Game Lodge & Sanctuary.

Dear Gary, thank you so much for posting your informative review. We are thrilled to read that you enjoyed being with us all here at Mount Meru Game Lodge. We certainly loved hosting you and we hope that you (and your family) will be back. We remember you said how much you'd like to return in the not-too-distant future with your children - bring them to climb Mount Meru! We've just had the opportunity to do this for the first time, and it was incredible. Our Lodge is also very conveniently located and would make the perfect base for you all, what with the hike beginning and ending in the nearby Arusha National Park. We look forward to seeing you soon. Fondest regards from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

We were originally scheduled to stay two nights at the end of our safaris; however, a change by the airline limited us to one night to enjoy this beautiful location and absorb its history. The lush landscaping is incredible and our room was between the river/stream and largest bamboo I've ever seen. The food was tasty, the staff very pleasant. Since we booked over a year ago, they've installed a boiler allowing you to have a hot shower on demand which was much appreciated. We so enjoyed talking to the new owners, and wish them much success. Just loved it!

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your wonderful review of Mount Meru Game Lodge. We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the Lodge and its natural surroundings, as well as the food, and that you found the service to be friendly. We aim to create a 'home-away-from-home' ambience for all of our guests, and nothing pleases us more than seeing visitors relaxing and enjoying all that our property has to offer. With regards to the boilers, all of our 20 rooms have electricity-powered boilers (geysers), meaning that hot water is indeed available on demand. We do advise our guests on check-in, please to use water sparingly, as the region is experiencing a drought, and the boilers only have so much capacity meaning that the hot water supply is not endless! You might also be interested to know that we are working towards becoming as environment friendly as we can: we are prioritising water-wise plants in any new garden beds, we have embarked on a glass and plastic recycling initiative, we source local ingredients as far as possible, and we aim to support local craft initiatives through our brand new Lodge gift and souvenir shop. Watch this space for more! It was wonderful talking to you, too, and we thank you for your encouragement and good wishes. Should you ever find yourselves in these parts again, karibu! All the best back home, with warm regards from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

Went by on impulse as had grown up here and had wonderful memories of when this place was a full time game sanctuary back in the 80s and 90s. Great to see what they have done with the place, and they still have wild animals here.
Service was top notch, food was excellent and the African chefs can even make authentic Italian dishes!
The swimming pool is perfect for those few laps to stay in shape or to just have a fun swim.
Staff are warm and friendly and the rooms were comfortable and clean.
Highly recommend, on your own, groups, with family or couples (saw all there).
If you need something specific they go out of their way to accommodate as best they can.
Definitely will go back.

This is one of my favorite places to stay in Arusha. It's a beautiful and safe place where colobus monkeys jump above your head.
The food is excellent. They have their own water source, so there is no need to use plastic bottled water.
All the staff are very nice and will do everything to make your stay unforgettable.

Dear Agnes, we're so happy to hear just how much you enjoyed your recent stay with us, and how our food and service stood out. Our aim is to create a home away from home experience where our guests can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy animal and bird watching. Over the past year we been recycling in partnership with a local school. We currently recycle all plastic, glass, tin and cardboard; and, specifically, with regards to water: we serve clean water in jugs in our rooms, and water in reusable glass bottles in our restaurant, thus minimising the reliance on plastic. Thank you for noticing these efforts! We so appreciate your review and 5 star rating. Wishing you all the best from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this valuable feedback about your stay with us at Mount Meru Game Lodge. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed our grounds and the animals, and that you were made to feel welcome and looked after. It is good to hear that we promptly attended to the issues you faced. On the subject of the cold rooms, your note has prompted us to address this aspect urgently. We have indeed been experiencing a chilly winter spell and would not like for our guests to feel uncomfortable. We have added extra blankets to all the rooms, and made available hot water bottles at our front reception desk. Regarding the dinner menu: it is high season, with many nights fully booked. In order to ensure that our guests who have opted for the a la carte option (instead of a buffet dinner which is served promptly from 7pm) do not wait too long for their meal to be prepared, we provide a special dinner menu with a handpicked selection of tasty options. Our regular and more extensive menu is still available throughout the day. We are also making our wood-fired pizzas available more regularly during the week, and no longer limited to weekends. Thank you again for choosing Mount Meru Game Lodge. With best wishes from our team.

I felt like this was home. From being greeted from a late night arrival with such big smiles and a refreshing drink, we were impressed!! For the next 7 nights we were treated like were their only guests ( and we were not). They paid so much attention to us catering to our every need. The servers were outstanding taking care of us with such big smiles. Then there was Dominic, who has been a worker there for over 40 years-what a treat it was to have him share his story with us. The lodge is such a neat place offering all kinds of animals for our enjoyment-water buffalo, monkeys scurrying around on the tin roofs and cranes. Just a pretty site. The new joint owners live on the premises as well and really show a love for this place and take great care of it. If you are Usa or Arusha-bound, this is a great place to stay.

Mount Meru Game Lodge is a gem. It was the most perfect place for my friend and me to relax after our somewhat strenuous camping safari. We needed a little bit of luxury and a slower pace and are so happy we found this lodge. Simply everything about it is perfect. The grounds are beautiful, the recently renovated rooms are nicely appointed and spotless clean, we especially appreciated the modern bathroom with the spacious walk-in shower, and loved the comfy bed. We also tremendously appreciated the unlimited gratis filtered water. The food is delicious, we really liked the breakfast buffet, all quality and fresh foods of a big variety. We got a big kick out of the zonkeys, water buffalos, and peacock that appear daily from the sanctuary - so fun watching them while we ate on the terrace or sat on our patio. We also saw three different kinds of monkeys on the property and many birds. Just fantastic!
All this is perfect on its own but what makes this place even more outstanding and special are the staff and the owner. Everyone is genuinely friendly, and the owner is very generous. Some of the staff noticed quickly that my friend is an avid birder and helped her find birds, such as an owl, hidden in the trees.
We stayed four nights and really felt we became part of the family. Everyone was so helpful and kind, they never seemed fake friendly but genuinely kind. I won’t forget the big smiles for a long time.
The lodge offers some free guided walking tours. Jaito, an amazing and fun guide, led us twice: one through the town of Usa River, and another one through nature surrounding the lodge. We had the best time with him!
We also enjoyed two incredibly good massages by Salome. We just had to have a second one after experiencing the first. Salome is a skilled masseuse whose kindness we keenly felt.
Laundry service was fast and flawless.
We cannot recommend the lodge enough and hope to be back. A huge thank you to everyone there for making our last days in Tanzania so memorable.

Dear Eric, many thanks for your message. The majority of our guests do indeed stay for one or a few nights on either side (or both sides) of their visit to the National Parks on safari. And we also have guests, many of them families, who come to us for longer, and not necessarily as part of a safari experience. Some to visit family members who live and work in Usa River, others on a long weekend break from Dar Es Salaam, for example. Having said that, 12 days might feel like a long time in what is essentially a small town. On the property, we have: 1) Swimming pool 2) Spacious grounds 3) Monkeys, water buffalo, zonkeys and birdlife to watch at play 4) Large outdoor restaurant 5) Family friendly menu with wood-fired pizzas available on Saturdays and Sundays 6) In-room massage or beauty treatments We are able to organise activities in the area, including: 1) Educational/cultural walking tour to local village 2) Canoeing on Lake Duluti 3) Mountain biking in the surrounding area 4) Walk in the forests at Lake Duluti (Most of these activities would take up half a day each) Other activities we could suggest in Usa River and further afield in Arusha include (we can put you in touch with a driver; there are a few we work with regularly): 1) Kili Golf Club (18 hole course plus lessons for children and adults), has restaurant and is a popular site for lunch and sundowners 2) Polo club and horse riding at Dolly Estate 3) Arusha National Park for day-trip safari (Momella Road entrance gate is a 20-minute drive from the Lodge) 4) Cultural Heritage Centre in Arusha (art, crafts, Tanzanite jewellery) 5) We could put you in touch with local restaurants and hotel restaurants in Usa and Arusha Town 6) Tanzanite Museum in Arusha Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us via email for further information. Karibu! Kind regards, Mount Meru Game Lodge

Good afternoon. I am not sure if anyone responded to your question or if you have already found your answers. Let me start with the easy one, a beer costs 5,000 Tsh, that's about 2 Usd for a half liter bottle. Regarding the day trip to Tarangire national park, we are located about 2.5 hours away from the park, not ideally located for a day trip to Tarangire. We are ideally located for a day trip to Arusha national park which is 20 minutes away. Most of our guests, stay with us on arrival and then drive to Tarangire and other parks for their week long safari. The guests may or may not stay with us again on the way out.
