Detailed Reviews
During our trip to South Africa, we discovered the best accommodation that we had stayed in. The room was spacious, clean and offered great comfort. Its location was convenient as it was close to the beach and there were several good restaurants within walking distance. Anthea, the host, made every effort to ensure that our stay was as pleasant as possible.

I spend alot of time in Port Elizabeth , the Beach Hotel is the only place I will stay. The rooms are more than comfortable, and satisfy every need one could have. The reception staff are absolutely fantastic and could not go out of their way any more than they already do to make your stay even better. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Their cheery faces and happy smiles really make a difference when you're away from home for extended periods. Staying at the Beach Hotel could not be better defined other than a "home away from home."

we stayed for a week to watch the 3rd Test match. Our greeting was lovely and set the scene for a lovely comfortable stay. The rooms , gardens and facilities were great. The staff were friendly and helpful. Nice breakfast. personal attention.
The only downside was the absence of a rail to aid one getting inand out of the pool.
Thank you for a lovely time

Hello Patricia and thank you for your review! So glad you had a pleasant stay and enjoyed the gardens and the breakfast. I will definitely chat to our team about a hand rail, that’s a great idea and an oversight by ourselves. I hope you managed to enjoy the swimming pool, you certainly had a great result with the cricket! Hope to welcome you in PE again. Thanks for staying.

We stayed one night. Stunning place with fabulous location. Few metres away from the beach promenade where I had an early morning run with the most magnificent sunrise. Very comfortable & spacious rooms.
Perfect night stay to break our long journey.

Long stay. The lady who runs the place is a soft-spoken and nice lady. Sad she did not speak up, when her husband who never greeted me until one moment he shouted at me wildly in the streets in front of people and threatened me. Just because a chair broke under me, I did not get hurt luckily, but he was angry I told the staff and not me. Staff was so amazingly friendly and nice, warm people. The facilities are great, and pool nice. But unfortunately, have to give a very poor review when I get treated like that as a reliant paying customer. So it is not the staff I rate as poor service, but the treatment of the owner

Our fifth stop on our Garden Route itinerary brought us to Fifth Avenue Beach House (see previous reviews of Blackheath Lodge, Akademie Boutique Hotel, Rosenhof Country House and Milkwood Manor). Located just off the sea front of Summerstrand this guest house is set in a suburban, wide avenue amongst other similar properties. Its secure gated grounds and rooms could be almost anywhere in the world as the décor and interior are rather bland and motel like. Apparently, the main clients in mid-week are business people and the accommodation appears to be geared towards this type of clientele.
We were very warmly welcomed by the delightful and diligent Renée, who showed us around the extensive building and small pool/gardens. We were given Room 4 which is very spacious with king size bed, large lounge area, shower and jacuzzi and a small balcony, over looking the road. There was air conditioning, two TV’s, a fridge and a microwave – so well equipped overall. Yet it lacked much – the décor and wardrobes were motel like, no bottled water was provided, the mini-safe was very small and wifi was chargeable – the first time on our tour that wifi was not included – even most motels now provide free wifi – even for business people. There is an honesty bar downstairs – quite common in South Africa and the enclosed garden/pool area was pleasant enough.
There are reasonable restaurants in relatively easy walking distance and we celebrated Valentine’s Evening at the nearby ‘De Kelder’ restaurant, which was recommended by Anthea (the owner) and was good overall – even if the décor was a bit bawdy.
Breakfast was a disappointment – the staff were approachable and efficient but the choice on the buffet was hardly extensive and an absolute ‘No, No’ for us – orange squash was provided instead of any fruit juice. Three bowls of cereals were the same ones in place the afternoon before – all cling filmed – when we had our tour of the house the previous day. Presumably, they had been there all day and night? The choice of fruit was limited, the yoghurts were cheap and cheerful, and the breakfast area was dark and a little cramped. The hot breakfast choice was not untypical and the poached eggs were perfect.
Other reviews are extremely positive and descriptions such as ‘The best B&B ever in the history of the universe,’ and ‘Outstanding’ make for interesting reading but the reality is somewhat different.

I stayed at this hotel for a month while doing voluntary work in a Port Elizabeth township. It was wonderful to come home after a hard day to Anthea's (owner) hospitality and personal service. Large, comfortable and spotless room with all amenities, huge bathroom with shower and bath, terrace outside the door overlooking the pool, big breakfast cooked to order and for four nights a week home cooked food in the restaurant, excellent inexpensive laundry service.
There is an 'honour' bar and many comfortable places to sit inside and out.
You are made to feel very much at home in this relaxed but stylish hotel. Located in the very smart and safe area of Summerstrand with beaches 5 minutes away.
Excellent room rates for what you get and difficult to fault.

Being a Travel Agent this is a property I sell regularly so it was so nice to be able to visit PE and spend a few nights at this incredible Guest House so that I can now fully understand why my clients always ask to return there. From the moment we arrived we felt like we were at home as the place, the staff as well as the other guests were all so welcoming. The rooms are amazing and far nicer than many 4 star hotels. I was shown the biggest room (which we were lucky enough to stay in) and the smallest which to be honest is bigger than some of the 4 star hotels I have visited. The breakfasts were delicious and you certainly could not leave there hungry after being offered all that food. This place is definately a home away from home for anyone on holiday or travelling on Business and I highly recommend this to everyone.

This guesthouse really meets all expectations and is ideally situated close to the beach and many restaurants. I only stayed for three nights on a business trip, but my room had everything I needed, was super clean and the atmosphere in the whole hotel is very warm and friendly.
