The Rio Azul adventure began straight off the plane. Bruno, our transfer driver, kept us entertained all the way to lodge, doing the ‘jigga jigga’ around the famous Mozambican potholes and made sure we had a custom coolbox with drinks and snacks for the drive. As we stepped foot into the lodge we just knew we could leave crazy day to day life behind. We were personally greeted by each staff member to meet the team, with a delicious coconut welcome drink and beautiful presented snack to warm the appetite. A small glimpse of what was in store for us for the rest of our stay. The lodge is tasteful designed with comfy, crisp white furniture inside and out. The Deck area is the place to be to stare endlessly out at the magnificent blue water under the shade of the trees that nestle the deck like a luxurious tree house. Or drink the Mozambique local, 2M beers on a pool lounger around the pool. The lodge has a very peaceful atmosphere, making sure you always have a very homely feel, and you can truly just kick back and relax. Private rooms where you can literally sleep with the door open to enjoy the cool evening breeze tucked under the Mozzie net. A trip to BD island is a must for anyone staying at Rio Azul. An island that only exists at low tide is something quite special to see. The team ensures that all the comforts of the lodge are brought with to the island to enjoy a lunch on what felt like our own private beach. The seafood was out of this world! Freshly caught Crayfish, Prawns, Crab, Calamari, Fish and even Sushi! I don’t think I could ever order seafood from a restaurant again after this indulgence. The Team pulled it out of the bag with the most spectacular beach braai for New Years, where the evening could be enjoyed watching the sunset with our feet in the sand, sipping cocktails, chilling around a giant fire pit listening chilled beats and of course smashing as much seafood as our bellies would allow. We were truly looked after from start to finish, anything the team could do to make the stay perfect was done. Rio Azul is something quite special. We will definitely be back! John and Louise

To Mark and the entire Team, We can't thank you enough for the memories we've created as a family. You and your Team are outstanding - banana's added especially to breakfast, a meal brought to the room for a child not feeling good and so many more special touches. The effort put into the New Year party on the beach, the trip to BD island, calling everyone by name and the privacy of our Villa. Take care, God Bless and Thank you !

What an incredible place in an amazing location. The furnishings and decor are beautiful, bed, linen and pillows so comfortable, everything is spotless and each sunset exceeded the last. Mark and his team have perfected the art of hospitality. Somehow, they make you feel like you are doing them a favour by asking them to do something for you and the attention to detail is beyond impressive. Each day held a new experience, from snorkelling at Paradise Island, lunch and shell collecting on BD island, crayfish dinner on the beach, drifting through the mangroves and swimming in that beautiful water. I celebrated my birthday in the week we were there and I have not experienced a more special birthday from start to finish. And don't get me started on the food :-) I could not have imagined a better holiday if I had dreamed it up myself. Thank you to Mark, Manekas, Carlos, the marvellous chef, and each other member of the team. The last week has been the stuff memories are made of.

We had big expectations before getting to Rio Azul Lodge, our expectations were blown away the moment we stepped out of our transfer vehicle and were greeted by the superb Rio Azul Team and walked through the stunning lodge onto the deck overlooking the pristine lagoon. Our paradise holiday has begun. We had the most amazing family holiday, filled with adventures, private excursions, fun tinny boat explorations, delicious seafood, beach braai, sipping cocktails enjoying the most glorious African sunsets over the lagoon. The team ensured that we were treated to a idyllic holiday and they took joy in ensuring that we were having the best time ever. We just couldn’t say good-bye and managed to extend our stay with two days. A paradise destination we would love to share with friends and family. 💙.

We chose Rio Azul as our honeymoon destination and we were blown away. The incredible staff went above and beyond to make us feel at home. Each room is very private with a view of the crystal clear ocean with gorgeous loungers for afternoon reads. We enjoyed taking out the boats for fishing and sundowners in the mangroves if we weren't doing a day trip to paradise island or deep sea fishing trip (Both are highly recommended and the snorkeling at paradise island is a must do). This is definitely a lodge that will stay on our holiday list to return to.

Rio Azul was paradise found, the lodge, the scenery, the food, the staff everything was on a five star level for at a much more affordable price. I cannot recommend this place enough. There is so much to do and explore, the scenery and sunsets are breath taking, the mix of lagoon on the one side and then a short walk over the hill to the ocean with calm waves on the other makes this place hard to beat. Mark and Team go above and beyond, and you can really feel this places heart and soul. We will be back as soon for another fantastic family holiday, My kids loved every second. Oh did I mention, the best freshest seafood we have ever had, or the crayfish beach braai and the sushi bar on a stranded island? Spectacular place complete with a private dingy boat to go exploring, if your looking for the best Mozambique has to offer this is it! Thank You Rio Azul - we literally cant wait to be back!

What an incredible holiday we had as a family at Rio Azul. Mark and his team ensured that we had the very best experience of everything - the food was absolutely delicious, rooms super comfortable and luxurious, the main living area beautifully decorated. Mark was an exceptional host and fishing guide and went out of his way to make our trip extra special. The staff are all wonderful - such an incredible team! Thank you from the Saunders family

What an amazing experience and set up at Rio Azul. We originally had booked our stay in sept 2020, but due to covid, this was graciously honored and re-booked for Dec 2022. On arrival (after a “fun” drive along the beach, about 1hr 40m from Vilanculos Airport) we were greeted by John and Jane (the owners) and their fantastic team, led by Mark. From the moment we arrived, we felt very spoilt - this was truly a 5star experience - From our own private dining table, with water views to delicious cocktails available on a whim. We went out in 2 day excursions - 1) to BD island, a sand bar. This was secluded and a very unique experience as it was dependent on tides. 2) paradise island, this ended up being a private tour, with snorkeling and exploring the island (included checking out a famous hotel, which is now deserted). Both trips, everything was catered for, including private cabana stands set up on the beach. The food was exactly inline with the vibe. high quality, seafood, yet homely. The highlight was the beach dinner we had with Crayfish, complete with cocktails by a fire pit. Make sure you also try the chili sauce - it’s made on site and we ate it with everything! Overall, would highly recommend Rio Azul - it’s off the beaten track, with a 5 star experience. This making it unique and memorable - especially for those looking for the right mix between adventure and relaxation. Thank you Rio Azul!

We spent a truly memorable week at Rio Azul. It was a fishing holiday with a group of old friends. The food was exceptionally - lobster, prawns and crab as well as fresh fish and sashimi. The location is superb as there is often a wind blowing in from the sea and the lodge is protected from this wind by a large dune. The staff are beyond helpful and the fishing facilities were world class. I cannot recommend Rio Azul highly enough.
