To the person who said "just like home" I suggest you move. Looks cute on first inspection but the base guests here is more transients than traveler, not a good hostel . Many long term residents who won't give eye contact and seem to not be involved in keeping the place clean. Mattresses are 4 inch thick beat up foam pads. Clearly struggling, no energy I found and not even coffee in the morning. Only here for one night but kind of soured me on the town which isn't fair. Would not be a good choice especially for families.

This hostel is great for those on a tight budget. The price is way below other hotels are in the area - with a private room being about 1/2 the cost of the cheapest motel room we could find. Its friendly with the typical mix of hostel travellers. There are games to play in the common areas, cheap internet access, and laundry. That said, the place could use some cleaning. The rugs were a little dirty and the shower was almost unusable - BRING FLIP FLOPS! For $1 you get rough but clean sheets and a small towel. Note that even the private rooms use a loft, so that if you want to sleep next to your honey - be prepared to climb up and down a ladder and hit your head on the light. Note that there are no air conditioners. For us, the nights were cool enough with a fan, but it might not always be the case. The owner is a very friendly person - as are all who work there. The best part of staying here was hanging out in the common areas at night - talking to people and playing games. They also have a great album collection (LP) which is really fun to flip through and think of younger days. In the evening, there is usually a LP being played - FUN! It was very relaxing.

Firstly the place was like no other hostel I have stayed in, and not for the right reasons.

I wanted to like the place because the people were nice and friendly but the overall experience was horrible.

The mens dorm had about 18 beds in which is quite alot. The beds were old and it seemed like the place was seldom hoovered. The shower room was a disgrace. The shower was grimy and disgusting with old damp towels on the floor.

There also seemed to be permanant residents staying there one of whom snore ridiculously loundly. The other people were nice but it seemed to be very much a 'happy smoke' smoking place if you get my drift.

There were no lockers in the rooms so I carried my belongings around with me for the duration.

For 20 bucks it seems like a lot of complaints for the price but I would much rather have paid 40/50 for a cheap hotel/motel.

Glenwood Springs is a lovely small down and this review should not detract you from going there. Buses to Aspen are only like $5 and there are many hiking trails in Glenwood.

I stayed in this hostel with my boyfriend in July 2012. We just got home, actually, and I feel the desperate need to shower. He's stayed in hostels all-over Latin America with great experiences, so taking a weekend trip from Denver to Glenwood Springs, it seemed like an affordable option. Hostels are to be upkept as well as a hotel; you just sacrifice some privacy in favor of a communal setting... I've stayed at better motels. Actually, I've never stayed at a place as dirty as this.

Pro:
If you're looking to conduct an anthropological/sociological study of the, seemingly permanent, inhabitants of this particular hostel... this is the right place for you to stay.

Free wi-fi.

Free top sheet and blanket... I'm starting to stretch the pros at this point.

The kitchen in the main house looked clean... but don't open the fridge.

A clean female only bathroom in the main house.

Super friendly dog named Jackson.

Cons:
Chain-smoking transient personalities on the front porch to greet you. The two living rooms are seemingly fine... collection of records and posters, a piano, a computer. However, the other constant in the 16 hours (15 h 45 min too long) we entered in and out of the building was a woman (inhabitant?) staring off into space. I saw her on three different couches... with the same jug of half drunken milk... from 4pm to 10am.

If you're allergic to dogs said friendly dog has the roam of the place.

The outdoor patio between the two buildings was... rundown to say the least. Dirty mops over here, brooms over there, pieces of lumber and half built birdhouses (?) over there, neglect seeped everywhere. Neither comfortable nor inviting, but it was far better than being in our private room.

A private room for two? Awesome! Until we opened the door and ran into the bunk beds. Full on top, twin on bottom. Foam, yes foam, mattress. Lift up the corner and find dirt and pennies! No lampshade on the lamp. An old pillowcase for a window shade. No screens so be one with the bugs. Bring your own box fan if you get hot. Forget a door stopper, just cut a hole in the wall so the doorknob can't further... damage?... the wall. That's probably an aesthetic thing though. So if you don't like black peeling paint on your wall... this might not work for you either. If you are the type who can sleep on the floor, these beds will be perfect for you. The foam is really just a cover for the plywood bed frame. And would you rather choose the floor, I don't think there would be room for you down there. Plus, you might ingest a bit of dust. But the great thing about having a room overlooking the communal outdoor space is that you can second-hand smoke while you sleep. The functionality of the lock on your door is questionable at best.

Several people were friendly. Of the 13 odd people we saw as we went in and out, 2 said hi.

This is not the place to stay for a clean, sound nights sleep and even if you're in town only to party your way through... I don't think you'll meet the type of people you're looking to party with.

I stayed here over a holiday weekend. The place is cheap but a tent in the woods would be significantly cleaner. We stayed in a private room for 2 in the main house. The carpet was stupendously filthy. The bath down the hall was similar. This place is a dump. In my 4 months of budget travels through South America I never stayed in a place this bad! The guy at the front desk said the main house is closed in the middle of the day for "cleaning" very funny! . . .

I have stayed at this hostel in the past but on my recent stay ( January 2012) I found that this hostel has really gone downhill. I stayed in a private room for $25. The owner said they were going to raise the rate to $30 next week. I'm not sure that it was worth that price. I was charged extra for linens and received a very thin blanket and an old stained thin sheet. My room was very tiny with a bunk bed, no curtains on the window for privacy, a very dim light and a very dusty desk. The mattress on the bed was an old dirty thin piece of foam and was very uncomfortable. The bathroom and showers were disgusting and very dirty. I chose not to use the shower for fear I might catch a disease. Many of the people staying there appeared to be long-term residents who were kind of down and out, like maybe they had been homeless before they lived there. Most of them were hanging around outside and chain smoking. There did not appear to be a quiet time curfew enforced. I was rudely awakened at 1:30AM when a group of drunk girls came in and began yelling and giggling. The kitchen was clean but the residents were talking about how dirty it had been and how someone who lived there poured bleach into the refrigerator the day before "to kill what was growing in there". I have stayed at many hostels all over the United States, Europe, South America and New Zealand. This was by far the worst and most dirty, grungy hostel I have been to.

My stay was before 2010 but I still feel compelled to write another review. This place was pathetic. I stayed in a room with a futon matress laying in the middle of a dust filled carpet. Unbelievable! I remember lying awake hearing a sick and hacking women coughing thru the night wondering if I was going to get TB. My wife claims after 6 months of travel across South America staying in the cheapest places available for $3 per night that she never stayed in a place like this. I'm not sure how this place can have international hostel status. If your looking for a grungy dirty India experience without an expensive plane ticket this is your place!

I think maybe the American outbreak of Ebola started here. The place is DIRTY!!! I payed for 3 nights at the end of June. I only stayed two nights. My sheet on the bed had tear in it. When I removed the sheet the 4 inch foam mattress was stained with either feces or blood. There is was too much underage partying and fighting amongest "The Family" of people who live there all the time. Save yourself a headache spend an extra 20 bucks at a hotel. At least the owner told me she was raising the prices the following week. What a hell hole.

This is a decent somewhat below average hostel that is by far the lowest cost place to stay in this part of Colorado. In summer your best choice is to camp but in winter this is a reasonable low budget choice. There are a number of local derelict types who seem to be long-term lodgers here but people are generally friendly and the rooms are warm. Basic, shaky bunk beds and squeaky floors. Poor kitchen but decent living room areas. Parking is hit and miss, during the day it will be harder to find street parking but after rush hour is over you should have no problem finding street parking out front. This property is an easy walk from downtown and a longer walk to the hot spring pool. There are not a lot of amenities but this is a cheap bed that worked fine for me on a budget trip.

We had paid for three. Jeanie was very fair in refunding us. Besides the dirtiness, there was a core group of flophouse types and there was smoking permitted in all the outdoor areas, so nowhere for a nonsmoker to enjoy(the smoke smell was in the living room furniture also). We had a private upstairs room in the main jouse with downstairs hall bath(not clean) for females. The kitchens were mostly clean & well equipped. It was an easy walk to town, grocery & pool & river walks & bus routes.
