Our third visit to Howard Creek Ranch. First during the pandemic, first time in The Octagon. I really missed their breakfast. Truly added charm to the stay. The Octagon cabin (ALL OF THEM, really) is such a fantastic example of Sonny's artistic craftsmanship. Visitors should be aware that these accommodations are creations from the owners minds. Each piece of glass or tiny accent of wood is a decision. You get to sleep in art. I'm a fan of an outdoor shower and this cabin had one. Also, a wonderful jacuzzi! The pools just off the porch are still under construction and currently home to an army of tadpoles and baby salamanders (stared at them for hours). Instant water heater, so you'll have plenty of hot water. No suds in the tub! There is a microwave, blender, and mini fridge at The Octagon. Also 2 sinks, limited silverware and dishware. Come prepared with easy meals and snacks or dive into Ft. Bragg for meals or supplies (about 20 miles south on hwy 1). Above the farm is a trail leading up and down the mountain. The foggy mist lingered throughout our stay, which I was delighted with. On the mountain, you'll find evidence of what I hope will become future sites to rent or camp at (not yet!), you'll find an enchanted forest and a beautiful view at the top! Highly recommend exploring these woods safely. Below the farm is the beach. Quiet and beautiful! Find out the tide times and take a walk for hours. Watch the sunset. Often, the horizon is cloudy by you'll see the silver off the sun as it passes the line of the ocean. Breathtaking. Animals! When we visited, there was a brown bear sighting at the state beach across the street. I saw evidence of its presence at the top of the mountain and I gather the toppled waste bins at HCR on the morning we departed were signs of its shenanigans. Deer, so many birds, and snakes are at home in Westport. The ranch is also host to a few wonderfully friendly cats (kittens too!). There's also a mallard so friendly, In not sure it knows its not a dog. Bring books, cards and games and musical instruments. Sonny plays and, if the time and mood is right, a jam will commence. I've read a few reviews from over the years that Sally has a prickly way of speaking with guests. I haven't experienced it myself, but I suppose I can see where one might pick that up. My advice: don't be a ninny AND toughen or grow up. Most of the interactions I've had with staff here have been delightful and uplifting. I don't mind a little attitude and I don't expect every single person at every single business I patronize to kiss my bum or be Mary Poppins. I suspect they'll do fine if you can't abide a proprietor who's rough around the edges or has had a bad day. Have also read suggestions that they implement an online reservation system. Sally and Sonny are extremely personable, creative, caring people. When you make your reservation over the phone, it's an opportunity to interact with a human ON SITE who knows about the most recent changes, will ask you questions to test you out (HCR may not be for everyone and I know they'd rather host people who enjoy themselves than take your money while you're having a miserable time). 30 seconds on the phone vs. 30 seconds online... you'll be fine. My two cents to everyone at Howard Creek? Keep doing what you're doing. The site changes and improves everytime we visit and I'm in love with it all. My wife and I and our friends plan on coming back as often as possible forever. Highly recommend.

My partner and I staying in the Sea View Cabin this past weekend. I wanted so badly to give this place 5 stars and it was so close, but there were a few things that were lacking. Negatives: Know that the place is not clean - for me having dust and spider webs is not such a big deal. I know it's a cabin and we were looking for the more indoor/outdoor kind of place. However, the pillow cases were covered in hairs. It looked like maybe a dog had laid on the bed after the bed was made, but also the pillows had little hairs all over them. The sheets smelled clean and nice, so it was just a bizarre mix of clean but not. The other issue was the tub. Part of the reason I picked this spot was because of the tub. So excited! However as soon as we started to fill the tub, it smelled like propane. I went down to the main house and let a young fella know. He came up and agreed it smelled horrible and said it was because the tank was low. He proceeded to tell me that the smell is not fatal. I just think this is so funny. Of course it's not fatal BUT it's not healthy. Propane itself does not smell and there is something added to propane so folks know if there's a leak. Precisely because it is not safe to have leaking propane. I asked if it was something that could get fixed and he said they were tend to it the next day. The follow day I saw Sunny and he said he would check it out. We went out that day and when we got back to the cabin and I began to run the tub. AGAIN, it smelled like propane. I just let it go and figured they hadn't done anything to remedy the situation. When I saw Sunny in the morning he asked about the smell and I told him it was still smelling like propane. He proceeded to say that I must be really sensitive. I felt so patronized. Sunny is a very charming guy, but his response was not helpful. Positives: It's the Mendocino coast and so beautiful. The hikes around this area, especially the UC Reserve were delightful. Love the outdoor shower and the water was super hot. The craftsmanship on this place is adorable and unique. Love the sound of the ocean.

We spent five nights here in Aug. 2020, staying in the Meadow Cabin. It was a great and relaxing week on the North Coast, just a walk to the beach. As far as accommodations, the outdoor furniture could have been a little cleaner. Toilettries were also lacking. At no point was our room made up, though this may have been due to Covid-related protocols. On the fourth night we asked "if we needed anything." I'm fine with this level of service when I'm paying $50 a night. I'm less fine when I'm paying $180 a night. Having said this, the bed was very comfortable; and the old redwood cabin is super-charming. One of the selling points of this inn is the breakfast. This feature was also not available due to Covid. However, no adjustments were made to the bill. Also, not even a coffee station was set up. As an aside, when I called to set up the reservation, the woman I spoke with -- I assume the owner -- could use some hospitality training. I generally got the feeling I was bothering her. (This inn should probaly look into an online reservation booking system. This way guests would not need to interact with its staff.)

I can’t imagine how this place got any favorable reviews! The place is a wreck! Furniture on deck is filthy, unusable, covered in cat hair. Bird poop on everything! Room was mostly acceptable, but there was a half eaten candy bar in the top drawer, making it doubtful how clean the room was. Ugh. The worst! Filthy! No accommodations for not having breakfast - no coffee, etc. We got up and got out !

Howard Creek Ranch is the most disgusting place I've ever stayed in. We hardly made it through the night. It was depressing. Smelled of mold and mildew. Bathroom toilet did not work. Despite it being a bed and breakfast, we left way before breakfast. Could not bear the thought of eating anything prepared in that filthy kitchen or eat in the depressing dining room. It is billed as a working ranch. Didn't see anything that eluded to being a working ranch. There were some adult mallards being raised in the smallest of kiddie pools. The flowers were pretty, but the house needed lots of work and cleaning. The gray cat was extremely friendly and loving. She was the only good thing about the place.
