#2 of 38 hotels in Santa Monica
Santa Monica Proper introduces a looser kind of luxury to Santa Monica. Here, within walking distance to the beach, each of the 271 rooms, suites and spaces successfully optimize the city’s abundant ocean breezes and natural light, while the interior design finds inspiration in the organic tones and textures of the local coastline. Santa Monica Proper beckons guests with the only rooftop pool deck on the Westside, complete with Balearic restaurant, bar, and cabanas, where guests are front-row for sunsets over the Pacific; meanwhile, the landmark restaurant, Onda (opening September), marks an iconic collaboration between James Beard award-winning chefs Jessica Koslow and Gabriela Camara. With an emphasis on Eastern inspired wellness, the hotel’s Surya Spa (opening this winter), offers custom-designed Ayurvedic programs supporting physical, mental and spiritual health. Anything less just wouldn't be Proper.

Extraordinary property. Gorgeous design, great food and drinks, great staff. Love the Proper Santa Monica. There are advantages to each of the two buildings. Reservations at the rooftop restaurant are a must. Pool scene is fun. Will be back.

This is one of those hotels you can’t wait to get back to. My stays get better every time I’m there. The new Spa is great and the rooftop is amazing. I can’t think of anything bad to say about the Proper. Used to do the Fairmont when in SM, but now it is Proper. Every time!

After postponing our wedding twice and eventually canceling, my husband and I decided to elope. After following Kelly Wearstler's work for years and The Proper SM opening, we were thrilled to hear they would host our elopement. Erin Bennett was our point contact and so incredible in assisting us in the process. She was quick, friendly, efficient and on top of the planning process. She arranged multiple site tours for me and was even present the day of our elopement to handle the important details. We are so grateful we had her by our side during this process and couldn't be more thankful. The entire hotel staff was 5 stars! Everyone from valet, check in, restaurant to house keeping was so friendly and accommodating. It felt as if we were hosting a regular size wedding there, instead of an elopement on the balcony of our room. We are forever grateful for our beautiful experience at The Santa Monica Proper! After years of chaos planning during a pandemic, it meant the world to us to be treated so well for our intimate celebration. Thank you Erin & the entire SM Proper team!

This is my second time staying at the Proper for business. The first was in November of 2020, and they took Covid safety protocols very seriously. This time, I was happy to see all of the amenities open for guests, including the lobby bar. The staff is always accommodating (shoutout to Julien, Erin and Molly who always take great care of my team and me) and the property is always pristine. The food and drinks are delicious, the rooms are spacious and lovely, and the decor is such a sight for sore eyes -- it's a retreat from your typical business trip and provides a safe space for creative work. Highly recommend!

For this hotel’s price and caliber, we were very disappointed by the quality of service and overall experience. Our brief three-night stay brought multiple failures to properly set expectations and multiple careless and inattentive encounters. As noted in previous reviews, the hotel is clearly more focused on decor and appearances than providing care and attention to its guests. When we first checked in, we were told we had been eligible for an upgrade, but none were available until possibly the following day, so we’d be called with an update in the morning. The next morning, when we didn’t hear back, we checked in with the hotel so that we knew whether to pack up our stuff before leaving for the day. I was connected to the front office, who asked why I was requesting an upgrade and what I disliked about the room when I was “already staying in one of the nicest rooms.” I explained that we hadn’t asked for anything, we were just following up on what we were told so that we knew what to do. I did inquire if there were any quieter rooms, but was told that half the rooms face the street and the other half face the alley with morning trash collection, so the noise was a known shortcoming of the hotel having such a central location. We stayed where we were. This was the first of several similar instances in which the hotel proactively set certain expectations and then failed to follow through. We hoped to visit the pool during our stay, but both of the first two days had waitlists for every slot except 9:30-noon. We put our names on the waitlist for the afternoon and were told we were first on the waitlist and were very likely to get a spot. We planned our day to stay nearby, in the hopes that we could get a spot at the pool. I wasn’t sure how I’d be contacted, so I called to ask the protocol, and was told I would be texted around 3:05 whether I received a spot or not. I didn’t hear back, so I called at 3:30 to confirm it didn’t worked out. I was told that 3:05 was a mistake and they’d actually review the waitlist and text now, so I should hear back soon. I ended up having to call back a third time, lingering near the hotel just in case, and never received an explicit answer about whether or not I had gotten a spot, nor any update via text. A couple more examples of this inconsistent communication were being told upon check-in that we had late check-out at 4pm, and then being walked in on twice, without a knock, from the hotel staff, around 2pm, surprised we were still there. (Our keys also got deactivated at noon, so we couldn’t get back into the hotel or our room, and after having the desk reactivate them, the keys immediately deactivated again.) On another day, we were also told we could borrow bikes until sundown, only to be told at 6pm (in July) that it was too late. Plus water bottles and Nespresso pods that didn’t get replaced overnight, forgotten food orders during meals, dirty restrooms on the roof bar… all the missing touches that you’d expect from a luxurious establishment made this hotel’s nice decor feel like superficial quality, and made Proper feel undeserving of its five stars. Individually, these may be small inconveniences, but together they add up to a hotel experience that feels inconsiderate, and at $700+ a night, plus a resort fee, one expects attentive service, clear expectations, and the ability to utilize the premises, rather than constantly navigating rules and waitlists and having to repeatedly check in on the staff to follow through.
