My wife and I enjoy staying here and have several rimes, but they are really off their game. The hotel is very clean and the staff top notch, but broadly the hotel's owners are mailing it in. When you arrive (first impressions, right?) the planter along the front is just gross - not cared for at all and full of leaves, cigarette vutts and trash. It'd take somebody 10 minutes a day to clean it, so what's the problem? This is 2021, yet their wi-fi is very 1993. You CANNOT stay on it for longer than 10 minutes w/o losing signal. It's infuriating and inexcusable! Also, they're taking the, "Well, you know, COVID" excuse to the extreme. Gyms are open in CA, but theirs is closed, as is their business center. Many small restaurants surround them, all of which are open, yet their breakfast room is NOT. Why? Lazy? Don't care? I mean, really. You cannot even get a cup of coffee in the morning, and not a single bottle of water available at the front desk. Pathetic, really. Remember, this is in La Jolla, which means "the jewel." The hotel is no jewel, and certainly not befitting of its name, The Empress. Theiy're paying managers and general manager for what, exactly? Do they not have eyes? Can they somehow not see what every guest sees? Or do they just not care? We're REALLY disappointed in how far this hotel has fallen. 😡 The owners need to get their sh*t together or sell the place to someone will!

Hotel's Favourite
I stayed at the Empress in early November. The staff is handling COVID procedures very well, and they were extraordinarily kind and patient. The hotel is in an excellent central location--walkable to the cove and to shops and restaurants.

Great place in a great location. Can walk to so many places including restaurants, shops, and down close to the ocean. Room had a partial view of the ocean. Everything was very clean and cozy. The staff was great, particularly Siennika, who was a pleasure and made certain that I had everything.

This hotel was recommended on Travelzoo. Upon calling the hotel to check on availability for one week in April, I was informed we would have a room with a king-size bed and walk-in shower, with coffee provided each morning. The first part was correct; the coffee was provided the first morning, and I had to call for refills. It was advertised as having an on-site restaurant with a garden patio. One would assume the garden patio belonged to the hotel, not the restaurant; therefore, there was no place for us to sit outside, other than go to a bar or restaurant. Coming from Colorado, all we were craving was some sea air and fresh breezes, so this was definitely an inconvenience. We booked the hotel for a week, and after three days I inquired about clean linens and fresh paper or plastic cups. I was told that because of Covid 19 there would be no room service, but after enough complaining, we did receive fresh linens, and the bathroom was cleaned. The first morning after we arrived, we asked the female concierge (I use the term lightly) for directions to the ocean where we could see the sea lions and their pups. She gave us totally incorrect directions, and after walking 2 miles out of our way, we finally talked to some locals who pointed us in the right direction. All in all, this was definitely not the right choice for a week's stay, and I would never book the Empress Hotel again. In hindsight, we wish we had checked out after the first night.

This was the second time we stayed here. The first time was fine. This time there was almost no service with Covid being the excuse. We stayed for 4 days and they didn't clean our room until the last day when I complained. I have stayed in several hotels since Covid and they all cleaned our room. The coffee maker didn't work. We asked for a new one and left the broken one outside our door. Three hours later it was still there so at 11pm we had to go to the desk and ask for a new one. The new one was also broken. They don't give you any water so you are told to go to the vending machine in the basement. The vending machine was out of water. Why stay at a hotel if there are no services? We should have stayed at an Aribnb if we wanted to do everything ourselves. Never coming back.
