Greta palace surrounded by nature. Next to the cave and the monastery. Very good point of departure for Transalpina road. The rooms are large, clean and well equipped. At minus enough late breakfast. If you want to go early it is a small problem.

We went there to eat two days in a row, once the service was nice although one of the dishes had a dairy product that was spoiled therefore not suitable for eating. The next day, we had the unpleasure of being served by Diana. It was kind of awful, she was disrespectful, rude and without any kind of patience. We won't be coming back because of this behaviour which left us with a bad image of the place.

We arrived from Bucharest to Polovragi as people in the countryside were sacrificing the pigs and preparing the meat for Christmas and the year to come, so quite a ritual. We caught a beautiful sunset spreading red light on the hills and the Polovragi monastery. The accomodation was done in this pleasant context. There were other guests in the villa, which seemed regulars. The rooms are large, with balcony and great view over the hills and plains. The temperature in the room during the evening and night was acceptable, but chilly as in the mountains, a bit hotter would have been more pleasant. The bed and blanket were not very convenient for a person at 1.90 meters. For dinner we took cabbage meat rolls with pork ground meat (great), fries with cheese (ok) and something which was supposed to be vegetables pilav, but it was actually only with mushrooms and quite tasteless and dry. Due to the cold weather (-7 but feeling more acute) , we could not enjoy the surroundings too much this time. The personnel was ok, but the regulars were a bit noisy and watching one of the "politically involved" TV stations quite loud, which affected our attempt to relax. The biggest problem was with the breakfast, which is " a la carte" , since they had no vegetables at all (no tomatoes, cucumbers, salad, bell peppers..), some other dishes were missing fully or partially, so the combination we ended up choosing was not the best to start the day with. To be tried again maybe during vegetables season (summer/autumn).

Do you want to visit Transaplina, not get ripped by Rinca hotel and B&B owners, alternate the entertainment and have a safe and perfect place for your kids? Go to Pensiunea Castania! By all means! Nice people will take good care of you and you'll forget any back home problem real fast!!! The place is very well situated, on a secondary road, with no traffic, at max.200 m from Polovragi Monastery. The later is straight in front of Cheile Oltetului and Polovragi Cave. Castania has 11 rooms out of which 2 apt. The serve meals all around the clock having their own kitchen and restaurant, with product from local specialties to pasta and pizza. The yard is generous with plenty of toys for kids. Dogs are also allowed but call them to reconfirm this before you decide to book. They also have two dogs, very quiet and friendly. Parking place is also available as well as free internet. Point of interest: Day 1: Polovragi Monastery, Polovragi Cave and Cheile Oltetului Day 2: Muierii Monastery and trail trip to Crucea lui Ursache. Spectacular view over all the are is a must from there. On the way to the cave, near monastery fence you'll pass by secular chestnut trees, 2 m thick. Day 3: Transalpina is at only 30 minutes away by car. Wake up in the morning, make as many stops for photos before and after Rinca winter resort, go to Obirsia Lotrului for taking the lunch near 30 m trees and end your trip at Oasa Lake where you can buy genuine natural honey and cheese. From Castania to Oasa Lake is a 2 hours way by car so in the end you'll have to leave at 6 o'clock pm at the latest from Oasa in order to reach home in time. Day 4: rest in Castania, go on the backyard hill and eat as much wild raspberry as you want:)) Day 5: visit Horezu pottery area, Hurezi monastery where Constantin Brancoveanu is burried (ask the nuns to tell his story, they will do it if asked, don't expect them to offer), Arnota Monastery where Matei Basarab is burried and Culele Maldarasti (former rich people houses from 19 and 20 century. Day 6: go to targu Jiu to see Brancusi opera and visit Tismana Monastery A perfect vacation!

We were looking for a good and safe place to have lunch after crossing the mountains on TransAlpina. We tried at Castania and luckily they welcomed us, even if theyinynu operate more as a guest house with restaurant for customers and not as a popular restaurant/inn. We enjoyed 2 traditional Romanian dishes, which came very quickly: cabbage meat rolls and stuffed bell peppers, both were absolutely delicious. The service was great , we got complimentary cheese pie and the bill was incredibly low. We will definitely come back to also stay here for a few days.
