We had chosen to book a nice accommodation to be closer to the airport (less than 1h30) before our departure from South Africa. It is a manor built in 1912 and has been tastefully restored while retaining many original materials. 8 bedrooms, a swimming pool, gardens, a 500 ha property! Full of sometimes tumultuous history that we will explain to our guests, visit to the mausoleum outside where members of the family are buried, moving... The rooms are huge, refined, including bathroom, living room, luggage storage, etc. (upgraded to a ground floor room overlooking the garden, splendid and truly 5-star standard like the other rooms we visited) Bar, lounges, billiard room everything is very beautiful. Dinner by the fire in a magnificent dining room, very good food and good wines. The entire team that manages the manor is attentive, considerate and warm. Norman took good care of us Lovers of history and luxury will be delighted with excellent value for money.

Hidtorical Cape beauty on the highveld provides an extraordinary blend of graceful architecture, spacious and elegant suites, sublime cuisine from the chef Eddie, attentive world class service from Norman and a welcoming and helpful team including Emelly and Connie. Serene spa experience topped it off. A wonderful place to retreat to, close enough but away from it all!

What a fabulous stay - definitely exceeded my expectations. The staff are amazing, particularly Norman who does many different roles... porter, waiter, sommelier, tour guide, and just a lovely person to chat to. Ronel and Hannlie were great too and gave us a personal tour of the impressive Mausoleum.
Our suite had 4 rooms ... bedroom, sitting room, dressing and luggage room, and beautiful bathroom. We spotted a jackal from the bathrom window.
The manor is even better than the photos on the website. We also had the extreme fortune to be the only guests that night (midweek) and so were able to explore the whole manor - several wings and stories and tour of cellar and wines by Norman. It reminded me of the book The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe - where the kids go exploring an old stately home.
My only regret is not staying long enough to use the chess room and library and all the other rooms, and to explore the walking trails. Will definitely come back.

Food - was good. Service from Lawrence was good. Warm welcome from Ronel
No WIFI No TV Signal
10h20 - 3 people knocked at the door to basically all me to leave. Happy for a gentle reminder but 3 people asking me to leave is aggressive especially since i was accommodating with regards to the lack of WIFI and TV.

The drive to Balfour might be a little strange depending on the route you take, but once you have negotiated the dirt road to the Manor, you are welcomed by the magnificent manor house and their friendly staff.
We immediately noticed the quietness. It was bliss.
We were upgraded to a palatial suite. I always judge a place by the coffee that they offer in the room, and I am pleased to say that filter coffee was offered, and topped up at my request.
Dinner was exquisite, lamb loin with some veges. It was a 3 course meal. Breakfast was traditional fare of eggs, bacon and so on. It is always a nice touch when the Chef presents himself to be complemented.
The only disappointment was that we had requested a late checkout which was approved, but on the day, the staff didn't allow it. We initially wanted to entertain our family for Sunday lunch, but the price was exorbitant, so we didn't book.
The history is incredible. I urge you to read the book that was printed with the construction and family history.

A restful weekend in the country spent in a beautiful and tastefully elegant Manor. The suite we had was so large and well appointed, not to mention the lovely rose garden and surrounds.Dinner and breakfast was top notch, but best of all was the care and attention that we got from Norman and Emelly. We were thoroughly spoilt without feeling the staff hovering, were sorry we only booked for one night. Would highly recommend as a luxury weekend getaway. An added bonus was that it took us all of 15 minutes to get to the Manor😊

What an amazing hotel! If you are looking for some quiet time away this will be paradise. Norman was exceptional ensuring the service was unprecedented. Their is very little to do there and in the surrounding areas. If you are one of those people that need something to do, you might not enjoy it. But if you enjoy a good book, great glass of wine, delicious food and a swim, you will love it.

Welgelegen Manor is a lovely, historic location that comes out of nowhere. Ronel and her team go out of there to make the stay hospitable and personal. Highly recommend it for families and couples. It's a heritage-perfect getaway just over an hour outside of Johannesburg.

From the day we arrived, we were treated like royals. Thank you to Ronel and Norman for looking after us and spoiling us the whole time. The suite was beautiful and clean and we had a cozy fire the whole time. The food and wine was superb and thank you to the Chef and all the other staff for looking after us. We definite recommend this Manor for a weekend stay anytime. Very Quit and you can only hear the birds singing. Exquisite!
