This guesthouse seemed to have started out as a beuatiful venue. I loved the mix of alternative decor (manequins that could freak you out a bit late at night in the foyer) and a clear African theme. Unfortunately the appeal is often detracted from by a mismatch.

My lovely spacious room, had some beautiful pieces that fits the African theme offset by a rundown and obviously cheap cupboard and a single bed squashed in. I've also not often seen an industrial looking sink in a bed and breakfast. The upshot is a feel of something that may have started out as a nice B and B, but ended up stuck somewhere on its way to a self-catering unit. The room itself also had the feel of something that hadn't been cleaned regularly or properly. And if you're a hygiene concerned individual the obvious spots in the bathroom that had become grimey because of not being cleaned regularly and properly and the obviously water thinned shampoo might be off-putting.

The staff were excellent and friendly and always ready to help. Breakfast was great and somewhat different on the two mornings I was there. It is served at a single long table so if you want some privacy while having your breakfast...

Overall my feel of the stay wasn't unsatisfactory (I've been in worse moods however) and there were some redeeming features. But the Olive Tree has the feel of something that started as an upmarket idea and devolved in some significant ways to have a strong 'budget' feel (there are other less flattering features which I've chosen to leave out of this review). So I'd recommend it if you aren't too fussy and it may work well if you have a family trip with small children, but it is definitely not a couples getaway treat.

I booked my room through a well known online booking engine. It clearly stated that the amount due will be settled upon arrival. This was not true since I got an e-mail the next day to say that I have to make a deposit to ensure my booking is confirmed. This annoyed me because then it should have be stated when I did the booking.

The place is conveniently situated with restaurants nearby and you have the option of requesting delivery from several restaurants nearby. The room was generous with a small kitchen and a huge dining table. This room does not feature on any of the pictures on the website. The TV needs an urgent upgrade and a shower in a bath does not do it for me. They offer Wi-Fi but after my second attempt at connecting I gave up.

My room faced the parking area which is not ideal. I appreciated the fact that they prepared breakfast for me quite early when I had to leave early.

It was a three day business stay and and workshop. Workshop room was spacious and warm for the winter. However, the room was not neat, looks old, towels not replaced, sheets not changed on the bed. Smallest old analogue tv, didn't love the food. I will recommend the training room but will not recommend the guess rooms

This has to be one of the hidden gems of the world. An inner courtyard is enclosed in an oasis of beautiful trees, plants and quiet serenity and yet the staff are always on hand to assist, make you feel an honoured guest and provide. The rooms are quirky, quaint and yet of a high quality, with everything a high standard of cleanliness and privacy. The Olive Tree is in a quiet part of Johannesburg and is so much fun to visit, a balance of getting away from it all and yet being as sociable as you wish. Do go and visit.

The road leading to the guest House beautifully covered with trees. the guest house itself.. a holliday feel ... Its like going into the country getting back to your roots and feel the freedom of city life... YET you 5 minutes away... All the basics and each furniture piece not new tells a story.. You have to remember each room has a theme and the room has the feeling of country peace.. For me this is a place to find yourself, if you allow the the surroundings, trees birds and garden to free your spirit.. The staff are wonderful and go out of their way to accommodate you.. This is the place to spend a night or two to remember your roots and to stay humble.. Hosts are wonderful souls and a daughter that makes you smile on your worse day... thank you all

I stayed in this guest house for 5 months. All the requests i put were taken care by them. Totie and Philida, who owns this place were very friendly and caring people. The money was very reasonable. Place is not too big. There is a free wifi available only at the reception. You need to pay extra to get wifi to your room but lot of times the internet doesn't work :(

On a recent trip to Jhb we were put up in this “Guest House” As you walk in you can see it’s African Themed decor is outdated, you can smell the dust & floors are dirty. When you enter the rooms it’s pretty much the same thing, outdated, unwelcoming & dusty. I didn’t feel relaxed or comfortable at all. When we eventually did try fall asleep, at 9.30, (the beds are hard & have broken springs!) we were greeted with a huge spider 🕷 on the wall! I have a phobia & was terrified. After several attempts to phone the ‘manager’ and get some help to remove it they finally came only with a bad attitude telling us if we don’t like it we must pack our bags & go!! Never have I ever been spoken to like that especially as a “guest” of this establishment.
Totally disgusting & unacceptable.
Don’t stay here if you have a choice there are plenty of other more pleasant places to stay in Randburg.

I would not recommend this to anyone. We were welcomed by a guy who appeared to be the gardener (in his work suit) and was doubling up as receptionist. Upon enquiry we were advised that we could not come and go as we pleased as there were not enough remote controls for the gate. This guy would have to open for us each time.

We arrived quite late in the day and it was obvious the room we had booked about a month in advance had been allocated to someone else. We ended up in "Balcony" (I think it was called) which must be the smallest room on the premises. Apart from the size of the room we did not like the fact that the toilet and bathroom did not have a door and the place was generally dirty.

We did not see any members of management and had to deal with the cleaners who were still cleaning some of the rooms as late as 4:00 in the afternoon. We were fortunate enough to quickly find alternative accommodation and decided to leave about an hour after our arrival. The workers did not seem surprised or concerned to see us leave.

This was a really bad, albeit very brief, experience and we will certainly not be going back there.

We booked on 25 December for 8 to 10 January. We received confirmation of our booking from booking.com. Then on 2 January we received an email directly from the guest house cancelling our booking as they had received a group booking in the meantime. This is the worst business practice possible.

We then had to find alternative accommodation at short notice, which meant that we had to pay almost double. We cannot recommend this establishment at all.
