Detailed Reviews
To pay R1500 odd for a night at The Farmhouse on 2nd Avenue, Linden, Johannesburg, one would expect closer attention to detail...
In the shower was a complimentary shower gel and body lotion, however no shampoo or conditioner, no shower cap, nor was there any new bar of soap provided, but I later noticed some soap that a previous guest had used and left on the window ledge by the bath. Only one hand towel was provided, not two as per normal hotel standards. Light globes were fused and the main lights in the bedroom didn't switch on. Water pressure in the shower and to attain the right temperature took way longer than expected. These are small things that one could possibly overlook, but the sheet on the bed was also torn which I find unacceptable, especially when paying the rate per night, which is not cheap.
The breakfast was a decent portion, fresh and tasty. The gardens are also beautiful.
Under cover parking for guests is limited to 3 cars which can be problematic in hail season.
Although the overall stay was pleasant, it's just a pity they don't pay closer attention to detail in the guest rooms by providing the usual and expected complimentary goods and ensuring decent linen is used.

We use this facility for training and workshop sessions. The attendees love this place and cannot wait to be back for the treat at The Farmhouse. The facilities are great, staff is friendly and go out of their way to assist. The food is absolutely fantastic!

One of the more tranquil settings in this big city has been a favorite B&B for me during the past 2 years of business trips to Jo'burg. The rooms are well equipped and the service is always good, but the excellence of the breakfast is the dominant reason for my regular return visits.

I arrived and was told the hotel was closed. No-one knew I was expected. No proper check-in or check-out. No invoice. No breakfast on Sunday as nothing was ready at 07:30. No shampoo or items in bathroom

The manager is rude and disrespectful. I heard her swearing at a staff member. She could barely communicate with me. The place is beautiful but i would never go back there. Unless the are under better management.

I have been here maybe 4 times in as many years, on business. Love the place, for its beauty and tranquility, and for the friendly staff, and also for the excellent home cooking.
The centre piece is the grounds, with an inviting garden and water features centred with a seating area surrounded by a moat and fountains. Trees and birds add to the beauty.
In spring, the Jacaranda blossom is beautiful.
Unfortunately, in order to help maintain the garden, several areas of roses/plants and the water plants have been removed or replaced with grass who has lessened the getting lost effect that was part of the charm, but I'm not knocking the place for it, better have something maintainable, than have it go to ruin.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable, although the occasional maintenance item crops up or the Internet (although improved) needs a little more power, I'd like to enjoy the water area but no signal there...
The staff, singling out Lorraine and Miriam have been there on all my visits and are wonderful. Others have been fine. The home cooked food is beautifully done and feels home made rather than hotel fayre.
This is family run and feels small in some ways, so don't expect the service of a larger chain group. This is about charm and joining a family as a home from home.
I leave here after tomorrow and am looking forward to my next breakfast and the smile delivered with it.
Love this place, can you tell?!

under new management, this B and B is a magical place to stay with beautiful grounds and a very comfortable room. The staff could not have been more helpful and the food was delicious. I would not hesitate to recommend this to friends and anyone who loves an unusual place to relax away from the cares of the city life.

A very well maintained property.
A beautiful garden and peaceful environment to stay in an it is nice and quiet due to it being a distance from the CBD and other larger settlements. The heat got a bit unbearable at times as the air-con wasn't working properly but, it was a pleasant stay regardless!

It was great staying over at The Farmhouse. Friendly hosts, I right at home. Absolutely loved the underfloor heating as I arrived with a cold front. And the garden is so beautiful, wish I had more time.

Let's face it - there is no good reason to spend much time in Johannesburg. When you've gone through the Apartheid museum, the Constitutional Court House, the compulsory but meaningless tour of Soweto (because seeing it and living in it are 2 completely different things), you're done... The rest is neverending suburbs with high security walls... Living there is, I believe, quite nice (lots of culture, nice places to drink coffee at,,,), but as a visitor, forget it!
Having said that, if you have to stay there, the Farmhouse is the place to stay... A beautiful garden - great mix of British and Florentine inspirations, a gorgeous colonial house and outstanding rooms to make you feel comfortable and relaxed after your day in ugly, dangerous and stressful Joburg. The welcome is warm but not embarrassing, the rooms are better than in most 4* hotels I've stayed in, the atmosphere is somewhat perfect - cosy, comfortable, discreet...
Dining was excellent - very cheap ($15 for 3 courses) and enjoyable. Don't expect 5* chain hotel servicem this is a guesthouse, not a Hilton!
What is special about the Farmhouse is not about any specific feature or service, it's about this rare concept of charm. What Karen and her team have achived is creating a place where everywhere you look is beautiful and lovely. All details have been carefully designed and the result is a place where you feel instantly comfortable and relaxed. I felt I could stay there for a long time... and this was a blissful heaven in Joburg.
