Where to start!! Going to be with the most amazing view?? Check! Sleeping in an amazing bed?? Check! Waking up with the most amazing view?? Check! Enjoying an amazing breakfast?? Check! Friendly hosts?? Check! All around really a very enjoyable stay which I have done about 3 times this year alone, even though I live about 5km away, I consider staying here a well-deserved mini-vacation!! In fact, I will be booking in next week for a mid-week breather from a busy schedule!
Lovely accommodation with great views but the elderly woman managing the place was exceptionally rude. We arrived early to check in, just hoping to drop our luggage and even though the room was ready, she huffed and puffed as though we had caused a massive inconvenience to her. On the morning we were to leave, we arrived at breakfast to find the doors to the breakfast room and reception locked - even though we could see breakfast laid out on the table. We knocked on all the doors and waited for 30 minutes, but eventually had to leave to catch our flight. We left the keys near the main entrance, having gone without the breakfast we had paid for. Minutes later I received an irate phone call from the woman who berated me for not leaving the keys in her hands. Honestly, the views and comfortable rooms are not worth the trouble of dealing with her.…
Stayed here with my partner in April 2017 for one night. Like others have said, the floors and beds are creaky and loud and overall the ambiance is uncomfortable and unwelcoming. Although in a nice neighbourhood the location is out of the way. Yes the place is nice (modern and expensive looking) but the rooms are pretty basic. We can live with all that without much worry, however, what really did it for us was the owners. When our taxi dropped us off here the automatic gate closed on the taxi itself causing scratches to the car. The owner came out and was very rude to the taxi driver. We felt terrible for the driver, his car was severely scratched and the owner was quick to complain about potential damage to the gate; there was none. With that behind us we checked in and moved on. We ordered food to the house for dinner, since there is not much close by to eat, and when I went down to pay the delivery man the owner came out. It was my last night in SA and I was happy to offload my loose change to the delivery man as a tip. When I handed the man the tip the owner grabbed it out of his hand and told me with a stern tone that I cannot give him this, it was too much. It wasn’t more than $10, and it was my choice. There was some uncomfortable tension to say the least. Those were just two of the interactions with the male owner, the female owner was not much better. They both came off as patronizing and elitist. We felt not welcome by the owners in general, however, there was one staff member at the reception that was friendly and courteous. Overall, although it has the basic amenities and is a nice looking place, we just did not like our interactions with the owners and found the atmosphere unwelcoming. I would not recommend this place particularly because I don’t support the owners and the attitudes they have towards others.…
I am not a big fan of Johannesburg but unfortunately we have to go through to JHB from time to time. We decided to stay in a different area other than Sandton for a change and we were plesantly surprised at how lovely the North cliff area is. 12 on Hillel was a great choice. The host, Phia, is very friendly and accommodating. The room we were in was large and spacious and elegantly decorated. The bed was comfortable, and there was everything you needed from good wifi, DSTV, aircon etc The views however were my favourite thing. You can see for miles and the view is absolutely stunning! For the first time I can actually say that Johannesburg looked pretty to me! We also took a run up to the Northcliff Eco Estate (a bit of a hilly climb) but the views from there are also well worth it and you get some good exercise in. They serve a lovely continental breakfast consisting of yoghurts, cereals, boiled eggs, cold meats and cheeses etc. It was a very satisfying breakfast. They have a stunning pool which looked very inviting but unfortunately we had to leave early otherwise we would have most certainly had a dip. We will definitely stay here again! …
My girlfriend and I recently had the displeasure of staying at 12 on Hillel. Although well equipped, the bed was creaky and the wooden floors are not suitable for this kind of environment. When we left for dinner the owner stormed out behind us and asked us to return the gates remote, we then told him we will be back and he asked us if we're sure, damn straight we'd be staying the night, especially since we paid for it. If you're looking for a decent accommodation with good hospitality this is definitely not the place. I'd highly recommend Orangerie guest house 3 doors down.
