My wife and I decided to go away for a weekend and I remembered Saamrus from a few years ago. I was a bit reluctant at first as before there were so many flies but i decided i will brave the flies as this place has the most beautiful walking trails and you can take along your dogs. As soon as we arrived the staff was very helpful in assisting us in getting settled in and making sure we needed nothing more. It was also a very pleasant surprise that there were almost no flies at all, except for the one or two lost one's that wasn't a bother at all. The views from the top is really something to experience, especially if you go out on the walking trails. Saamrus is tranquil and relaxing and even the dog had lots of fun and i could see how disappointed she was when we had to say goodbye to go home. We (dog included) cant wait to go back to visit in the very near future.

We had a lovely weekend at Saamrus Guest Farm. The quiet and private surroundings with views over the Lowveld were soothing to the soul. Our two Border Collies loved running free on the trails. It was obvious that great care was taken with furnishing the chalets, from the electric blanket on the bed to the soft bath sheets in the bathroom. The fireplace was a hit with all on the cold winter nights. A filled water bowl and poop scooper was supplied for the dogs. All we missed was a small oven as we brought along a pie for one supper, but we managed to work around it. Thank you, I am sure we will visit again in future!

What a wonderful place! It was such a treat to walk my dog off lead over rolling hills and winding forest paths. My dog didn’t want to leave!
My daughter and I went together for a bonding experience with our dogs - we walked, we swam, we explored the area and we rested. Several restaurants in the area welcome dogs!
Our cottage was perfect - clean and had everything we needed, including a large fenced in area around the cottage so our dogs could be kept close and safe.
Saamrus Staff were also very helpful and friendly.
Just arrived home and looking at the calendar for our next trip!

We were very disappointed in our stay. When we arrived the lady just handed over the key, I had to ask myself for directions to the cottage, no further information was given. We stayed at Karee cottage, the description says cozy, which is true. But it is also very small and the fenced off area outside is also very small and big rocks. So both not suitable for a bigger and playful dog. Before it got dark we quickly went for a walk, we came back covered in ticks. It would have been nice if the lady had warned us on arrival, so we would have sprayed ourselves. You can hear the trucks and cars on the main road quite well. When we used the kitchen sink, very smelly water came up in the bath. The light at the bed wasn't working. When we switched off the lights, 2 bats were circling hectically above our bed - so we had to leave the lights on and hardly slept. In the info at the cottage it said there could be lots of flies and mosquitos - so why no insect screens so you could open some windows? To cut a lot story short, we booked 2 nights and only stayed one. When we left in the morning we explained our disappointment to a staff member... the owner would contact us... which she never did. We have stayed at many pet friendly guest farms, who charge less, have far better and cleaner accommodation and gave us lots of friendly service. So no repeat at Saamrus for us, and wouldn't recommend is to my friends either.

We are sorry that you were disappointed. The staff member on duty was supposed to show you the way to the cottage, and we will emphasise this to them again. Karee Cottage is described as a small, open plan cottage. It's also one of the more affordable cottages. Had you notified the staff, we would have moved you to a bigger cottage. It is clearly stated on our website, as well as our booking confirmation to expect ticks on the walks in the veld and to treat the dogs for ticks prior to arrival. We have already checked and fixed the problem with the smelly drain and with the broken light. We are in the process of installing insect screens and will get to Karee Cottage soon. 90% of the time, we do not have issues with flies and mosquitoes, but as we are in a farming area we can sometimes have more flies than usual. Karee Cottage is right in the veld, and nature conditions are ideal for bats, which is an endangered species. They are attracted to light, and can fly into the cottages while out hunting at night time. Had you called the staff member on duty, they would have assisted in removing the bats. It's a pity that you did not notify us about your discomfort during your stay as we would have offered an alternative.

We wanted to get out of Jo'burg for New Years, for our cats, to get away from the fire works. We ideally wanted to book for the one night, for the 31st, but we were advised that over peak season, we can only book a min of 3 days, so we did.

We could only arrive on the 31st, because of work commitments. Was not and easy trip with 3 cats, but we managed. We found the location and accommodations very nice. The unit was clean and neat.

The major problem, and the reason we only stayed for the one night, even though we paid for 3, was the flies.... is was really, really bad. We would like to suggest putting mesh in-front of the windows and to cover the patios with mesh, this will make for a mush more pleasant stay.

The fly traps also had a very bad smell, so sitting outside was not pleasant al all

Sorry to hear about your discomfort. We have offered some compensation to guests that have contacted us via e-mail in stead of just complaining on social media. The fly problem was out of our control and unpredictable. It is now under control and we have compensated guests who contacted us privately by offering a free stay at a later date or refunding them where we found it appropriate.

Had a very pleasant weekend at Saamrus.

Pros: The cottage was very cozy and secluded, with a fence to keep the dogs from exploring without supervision. Can't fault the facilities, really comfy. The cottages are far apart, giving you a real sense of privacy. The paths, down by the river, are well maintained and a good stroll for the pets and their people. "Welcome" chocolates were a nice touch, as well as the super-sized water bowl for the dogs.

Cons: The garden area was a little unkept, with plenty of "paper" thorns that kept us and the dogs tip-toeing whenever we left the verandah. Was also a little overgrown and the bench at the fire bit was completely dominated by the bush, rendering it useless. The location is outside the city, but close to a relatively busy/noisy road which is obviously unavoidable. Also, the music from the nearby village can be heard at times. It's a pity that the longer walks are on community land and, therefore, not maintained. Maps are supplied, but the paths are so overgrown that you often find yourself slogging through the long grass, hoping to bump into the path.

All in all, not a bad option.

This place far exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the Hoephoep cottage and we had loads of space and great comforts. There was an electric blanket and panel wall heaters in addition to the fire place. The self-catering provisions were sufficient and they even had a coffee plunger! We loved every second of our stay. The beds were comfortable, the extra touches were well thought out (extra blankets to use outside around the fire). Lackson, Florence and the other staff were wonderful and caring and we couldn't have had a better escape with our doggie. The place is totally dog friendly and we loved the hikes! We did more than 8km of walking per day and it was just awesome. We hardly ever saw any other guests and the privacy and quiet was just what we wanted. We can't wait to be back.

We stayed for the weekend with our three (3) large dogs. German Shepherds and American Bully. Had an absolute ball of a time. The dogs loved it. We went on the walking trails and along the river. Very safe for the dogs with a fence around the individual units which is great if your dogs do not interact likely with other dogs (like ours!)
It is very peaceful and quiet and ideal to break away of the city life.
The rondavel was well equipped with all cutlery, towels and a nice warm bed.
Take your own doggie beds etc. We were welcomed with a big dog bowl of water, and there is a poop scoop in the yard with a hose to use. A very nice warm welcome feeling and really not expensive comparing to other pet friendly establishments. We loved the fact that they cater for LARGE dogs. It is difficult to find good accommodation with facilities to accommodate large dogs. Thank you Annetjie we had an awesome stay.

We spend Christmas at Saamrus and had a really relaxing and peaceful time.
The accommodation are very well equipped, neat, clean and comfortable.
(The bathroom and shower curtains in the Rondavel might need an upgrade though and I would suggest that the thatch in the bathroom gets dusted a little bit more often......just a suggestion to improve).
We (and the rest of the family who stayed at the Farmhouse and in Hoep Hoep) enjoyed every moment.
We thoroughly enjoyed the walking trails which are well maintained and beautiful! Our fur kids enjoyed every moment!
We will definitely visit you again! Thank you for sharing your beautiful farm!

The hiking trails are very cute and several trails to choose from. They also provide a map of all the hiking trails. Water bowls for the dogs are placed at your stand as well at the pool. Venue very quiet and has a relaxing atmosphere and very neat. Our dog kids enjoyed it so much. Would like to make the following suggestions if possible: to place a trash can and also a braai or 2 at the pool. Ice to be sold on-site and more candy or something to snack on. Once you're there, you're not in the mood to drive to the store.

Thank you for your positive remarks and good suggestions. We will make sure to put a trash can at the pool. The ice machine is on the wish list! Unfortunately we can not put a braai at the pool as some guests that book as a group then tend to take over the pool area and make other guest feel unwelcome when they also want to use the pool. For that reason we have braais only at the cottages. We keep chips and chocholate and some emergency supplies at Reception, but can not keep a wide range as it gets old before it sells. Most guest bring along their own snacks

Please advise if you have accommodation for 4 people on the 22 July to 24 July 2016. Thank you.

We have space in Akasia or Kiepersol. Both can sleep 4 each, but if you are four adults, I recommend booking both cottages for two per cottage. Regards Annatjie
