Detailed Reviews
A lovely venue. We received a refreshing welcoming snack while we were waiting for our couples massage. The massage was very relaxing and the ladies professional. Thereafter we were taken to a prepared table next to the river where we enjoyed a picnic on our own. The food was outstanding!
I can recommend this to all

Booked in @ Hornbill Lodge, awesome getaway... the staff was very friendly, the facilities was clean, both myself and wifey had an awesome time. We took advantage of the discounts that were included in our package through Saddle Creek adventures and spent the afternoon off roading with their quadbikes, fun was had. We came back to a delicious dinner, i remember that steak and prawns, I asked for medium and they delivered. Met the owner in the morning what a friendly family that owns the place, breakfast was just as great as dinner....will definately come back amd recommend the place

It was a great weekend away, we enjoyed every minute while there. They need to give attention to their breakfast, because the sausages we had for breakfast had that off-ish taste. Otherwise, their customer service is wonderful and the place where it is situated is amazing. Thanks to Benjamin, our hike tour guide, he's great with his never ending stories and made the experience very great.

We were looking forward to a tranquil getaway. But to our disappointment it was anything but. Even though Dec is a busy time, we didnt expect to be greeted by 90 odd guests on xmas day. The issue in this is that there is only one ablution block between day guests and campers. And as expected it could not accommodate all these people. By mid day the toilets were so soiled and dirty you could not use the bathroom at all. The guests were also very drunk and out of line in terms of behavior. Since we have small kids this just wasn't acceptable. They need not be exposed to such behaviour. And the grounds were left dirty with bottles lying around everywhere. Even though the staff did try and pick it up the mess was just endless. I dont think its fair on campers to have a bad experience like this. They need to decode is it a party venue or a tranquil camping site but it definitely doesnt work as both. People come to get away and ave some peace and quiet. Not loud music and drunk guests misbehaving. On top of that we laid a complaint about the mess in the bathrooms and grounds, only to be insulted by the owners. We have every right to say if we are not happy with the service. We then asked to leave and the owner refused to reimburse us and made some discriminating accusations.
On top of that the place is very neglected. The river is so dirty there is no way you can fish in there as the mosquitos eat you up.
All thats nice is the bushy environment. But thanks to the poor service I will never return and not recommend this place at all.

This place is far from a tranquil getaway.
I was very disappointed with the "luxury" accommodations. There where no luxury to be found and for the price we paid, we expected a lot more.
At first glance the place looks fine, but then you get to notice the funky smell in some of the rooms and in the kitchen. The toilet water from the second floor, leaks into the kitchen which stinks and is very unsanitary.
The bar stools are so flimsy, you can barely sit on them. It is very clear that nothing in this place ever gets replaced properly.
The outside area where you can braai and sit around a table is also a mess. The wooden table and chairs are placed on very uneven ground and are also falling apart.
Regarding the swimming pool area there are always very loud music being played and you can't have a decent quiet time there if you want to get away from the city.

Hornbill Lodge is such a terrible place for one to be, we couldn't even spent the night. We found the rooms to have a terrible, rooms to be extremely cold and old uncomfortable furniture , dirty linen on the bed, dogs all over one would swear those dogs sleep on the beds. To make things worse, unfriendly owners who were not even concerned that we were not willing to spend the night at their horrific place. I wouldn't recommend this place for anyone

We have booked for 2 nights at Hornbill Lodge, and all I can say is what a disappointment. The room smelt and felt dirty. Nothing like the advert. Also states as a 4 star lodge at the entrance of the lodge, but apparently is a 4 star B&B, which is also impossible with aircon not working and no bar fridge. The staff that works at the lodge is not presentable, walking around in track suits and flip flops. Nothing about this was 4 star accommodation. There was a big group of people, 2 rooms away from us that was playing loud music and partying. We went to lay a complaint with Cobie and he was not open with a solution. Said we are the only people to complain and that there is nothing he can do about this.
We asked for a refund as this is not worth the money we spent and he refused and said we should sort it out with Daddy’s Deals. He refused to let Daddy's Deals refund us, as we checked in already and left on our own terns (not taking in account with everything that is wrong with this place) Also accused us of lying and called us racist when we complained. (which we are the same race - so doesn't make sense) worst place with the worst management!!

We booked at Hornbill Lodge in Magaliesburg for Valentines Day. What an awful experience. The Lodge is so not looked after. For Lunch we ordered a beer, wine and food. My beer was not even cold, I asked the waiter for a cold beer and the reply was, sorry the fridge is broken. I then ordered a steak, first a Rib-Eye steak, sorry says the waiter we do not have it in stock. I replaced it with a Rump. It looked very nice on the plate but you could taste that the steak was grilled in a same pan where onions were done in. We then finished lunch and went to our room. OH MY GOODNESS, it was awful. The smell in the room was horrific, very bad experience and will never recommend this place to anyone. The lodge caters for people that work in the area, we saw 2x Transnet bakkies overnighting there as well.

Hornbill is definitely the type of place that goes the extra mile for their clients making you feel like part of the family. We hope to see them soon again. Some of the best food ive ever had, Steaks and Burgers and Milkshakes are a must.

If you are looking for a family run, exceptional service and beautiful property this is the place to come to. There are dogs on the property, so for an animal lover I would recommend that you meet Hashtag the friendly staffie on the property, his presence was such a delight! . A pool on site as well as a restaurant with a wide menu variety were nice additions. I will definitely stay here again in future.
